Does Video Editing fall into the Digital Art category or Videography? I'd reckon Videography more means about shooting video with a camera, while Video Editing is a thing even without actual footage.
I would like to make a suggestion for a DIY subforum. We can even call it Pigeonshit Moonshiners!
Seriously, I really do hope we get a DIY forum. Would be nice to have it so we can see stuff from peeps like RR_Raptor again.
I'm not sure we have enough users to justify splitting it into categories this small. I think that video editing, cinematography, SFX, etc, could go into Moving Image/Moving Pictures/whatever, 2d animation could go in the 2d subforum, 3d animation in the 3d subforum. Obviously some crossover, so if we end up going with tags instead of subforums maybe we could combine tags?
My cool hand drawn animation thread! [2D Art] [Moving Image]
ye i def don't want to split things up too much. I'm still not sure we really need to call it 'moving images' tho. Honestly just 'movie' or 'film' should be enough to get the point across. people aren't robots. They can figure stuff out on their own just fine.
I hear what you're saying, but again all I can really tell you is that the forum did operate in this fashion just fine for years back when it was first started. I don't really see why you think a creative work being posted in a separate thread is going to make it get less replies (if that's what you're implying), people will just be replying to it in a different area from now on. I also don't really buy the 'less viewership' concern because again, we're talking about a forum where 5-7 new things get posted a day. This is not that much extra effort here we're talking about.
really we can debate this as much as we want, but at the end of the day, garry pays the bills here and wants to do an experiment, so we're going to test it and see, and if it doesn't work out things will get reverted. We can speculate all we want about how it'll go badly/well, but we won't really know till we try.
I'm talking about old punch. When i brought back CC on there I had everyone help make and set up new thread icons, so yeah you would've seen them. Nobody ended up really using them tho due to people still being used to using megathreads when I moved everything into the new CC lol.
it's down on a computer. so Digital.
i would say digital unless we're talking about something that only got ever so slightly tweaked on a computer
uh it's still ultimately a film so it'd go in the film subforum, whenever i settle on a name for that. I don't really see how this one is confusing at all tbh.
look, it's gonna be a new thing, so yeah there's gonna be some teething issues at first. But people will figure shit out pretty quickly I feel like. And again, we can tweak things as needed.
i don't have any objection to tutorial stickies. once we get the new forums set up people can make some and i'll sticky them.
rite, all the subforums are up now. tomorrow we'll nail down the best way to proceed from here. probably going to just lock the content megathreads and put up a sticky in each sub explaining to make a new thread if you want to post something, and we'll see how things goooo
yeah don't divide into traditional and digital art, they are not different disciplines like 2D & 3D or anything of the sort. essentially all artists (as in drawing & painting) now interchange freely between software and sketchbooks, there's no conceptual daylight between these ways of working that would merit even different threads.
there's also no practical concern, the community we have of people who share these things and comment on them is small and self sufficient. We all live in the "2D digital art" thread (Pascall's mischief with the names still needs fixing) and if you read through it you'll see the way it operates and that it does not need to be made more nebulous or otherwise interfered with. you are mistaken about the format of one chat thread and various artwork threads being equivalent for the following reasons that maloof touched on above (incidentally I don't know why you're "not buying" his concerns, surely you asked for feedback because members of this community have better insight into how it works than you do, not because you wanted to "debate" the issue):
firstly and very simply, you don't chat about artworks using just text, you post what you're talking about, and what we talk about for the most part is our own work. you might imagine we talk about monet or somebody all the time, not really. the vast majority of the work of each user doesn't warrant its own thread, you don't make a thread for a sketch or a couple of practice pieces. so if we can only post our stuff in new threads, 95% of what is shared wouldn't be shared. so unless you enforce a ban on posting our images in one communal thread, we will continue to do that because it is the format which naturally works the best. no one is going to bother posting the minutiae of their artistic development in discreet threads and no one will bother to read them if they do. you don't think that lower viewership would occur for some logically empty reason, I've run the experiment on this myself, I made a sketchbook thread to log all of my stuff in and I diligently kept it near the top of the section by bumping it with new content continually for a while. I stopped because nobody was looking at it - and that's a content-filled thread that was maintained. years ago we had enough people scrolling around to find things and rate and discuss and generally give oxygen to individual threads, now that is not the case. your observation that only 7 creative things were posted in one day is an excellent point in favour of less threads, not more.
last note on the media splitting idea, the experiment has also been run where a mod split CWTDDAT (now 2d digital art) into its current title and a Traditional Art thread, it was not a good notion, we self-corrected and just use the 2d digital art thread for everything. we will know before we try, it's been had out already before the forum moved, any other consideration aside there's not enough people/content for more than one thread
and finally can I ask, what is this idea of the "fuckin pile of megathreads" that you want to correct
the implication is that it's messy because of megathreads? so you want to replace it with a pile of ten times as many threads?
maybe I've misunderstood but it seems like megathreads are the elegant solution to the problem that garry is trying to create now
yeah now that everything's set in their respective subforums, the traditional subforum is pretty much a ghost-town lmao. not enough people post that sorta stuff here clearly. I'll probably shuffle things about tomorrow once I get the time.
as far as everything you said regarding why do this to begin with, feel free to share your feedback in the Meta forum once we've tried this for a bit, but again it's how garry wants to try things for now. all the subforums are being changed like this. this was how CC operated for a long time years back, so I don't think it's that unreasonable to think it could work again, but we'll see how it plays out here + all the other subforums and take it from there. I can run your concerns by hezzy but again I think it's gonna be the same approach ultimately as the other subs.
well yeah i asked for feedback, but I can still disagree with someones line of reasoning if I don't feel it's a totally valid point. it's not like I'm totally unfamiliar with the forum or something. anyways tho, I just said that in reference to there possibly being an issue brought up by extra effort from having to click more threads, because I don't think it's gonna be that bad at all due to how infrequently stuff gets posted here to begin with. but again tho, like I keep saying, we can see how things go and tweak shit as we go along.
That was just a general idea for a more imaginative name lol, people will figure it out whatever the name
I know some movement on this topic may be happening tomorrow, but I just wanted to drive my point home with an industrial piledriver just to make sure it's super clear:
Made a beautiful infographic to help

??? What mischief?
I don't remember changing anything.
i've set up the 2d and 3d forums. idk what to use for the display image tho. feel free to browse through here and pick a good one if you can find it emojis gotta be the microsoft one.
or hell if you can mimic the style, make your own i guess lol. this is the creationism corner after all.
Maybe this for 3D art: 🗿 Moyai Emoji
The emoji doesn't look the best TBH, but it gets the point across.
As for 2D art, I think the current paintbrush icon works just fine.
@postal could you move my thread back to 3D art? Latent Child isn't a 2D piece. thanks!
Looks good. 2D/3D Art works better in hindsight.
One minor thing, the ordering. Currently it's...
2D art, Contents and Games, Musicians, 3D art, Writing, Photography, Film-Makers
When it could be...
2D art, 3D art, Film-Makers, Musicians, Photography, Writing, Contents and Games
Doesn't really matter in the end, just looks a bit better on the front page.
Thanks heaps dude
Had a quick 2 min browse, and I found these that could work:
2D Art

fyi i already have icons set for the other subs. i'm actually using the same ones you picked for contests and 2D art already haha. but yeah ill set that 3d art one
after experimenting for ages with the 'order' option in the subforum creation page, i've discovered it doesn't actually do anything, and the subforums are listed left to right based on activity lol. there's no set order for them in other words. o well.
ye i tried to quickly set things up before i had to leave for the day so i probably got some stuff wrong. fixed that
let me know everyone if any other threads are in the wrong place plz thx
I saw that but I wasn't sure whether they were recent changes or old lol
I'm working on a Drawing/Painting skills sticky. Is it possible for this to be a discussion thread as well so that folks can submit useful links that they think should be in the sticky?
ye sure
Wicked
it'll prob be fine once nothing happens to our chat thread. if we can carry on in there you can devise any sort of dystopia outside of it and we'll get along alright lol
oh okay it was postal apparently? sorry I should have known where the root of the evil lay
It bugs me that we have a 2D art subforum and a 3D Art subforum
fixed
