I think eye focus is the most noticeable thing I see in every kind of art which instantly pulls me out of it, even wandering through art galleries of amazing oil paintings you'll see beautiful men and women just staring off into the distance. It's annoying as well because a pupil being off by a single millimetre can completely ruin an image.
Been making daily work, but haven't been satisfied with much. Here's one from today that I'm happy about.

You aughta try limiting your layers then. It can be a fun experiment. Try and bring it down to like 4-6, 1-3 for the base sketch, then 1 for darks, mids, and lights.
I could try grouping some compositional elements together once I've decided on the final composition of a piece. This would cut down on layers used a lot, since I normally use about 2-3 clipping masks per element. That should work, so long I don't group element that are too close together, as that would mess up the masks.
Thanks, I initially kind of rejected your suggestion because I didn't want to give up the workflow I've just eased into, but this could make me keep it, plus improve performance.
Drew this for the Character Design Challenge on Facebook, the subject is 'insect warriors'
Looking for some criticism, the first thing that comes to mind is I need to work on my silhouettes since it all gets a bit messy towards the center

Do you guys have any tips for hatching and cross-hatching digitally? I'm running into issues shading large spaces without it becoming messy or looking shaky. I'm rotating the canvas and pulling towards myself to keep things stable, but it still seems like an uphill battle to do REAL shading with hatching (creating volume, not just accentuating details).

This is the best I can do shading-wise with hatching digitally. Notice the nonsensical white space on what should be the shaded side of the face. I'd love to hear what, if anything, I can do to improve my technical hatching ability.
I'd love this as a poster on my wall, dude
Thanks for the feedback! I've just recently decided to make my work more detailed so i'm still getting the hang of balance.
I think this is a problem that'll be helped once I work on my silhouettes, as having 6 furry limbs so close to the body and weapons does make the centre of the image way too cluttered
I did a quick sketch of a dream that I had yesterday, it's two different parts that blended together in my memory.

I'll probably clean up their designs and use them for future projects.
I'd start on paper firstly, drawing nicely is honestly easier with a pen if you're using traditional techniques I think. other than that you said it yourself, you need to draw volume. this is shameless because these are mine and also old but for some reason I can't think of any specific good examples of hatching from other artists at the moment

when drawing volumes you need to turn the form. for example identify a whole area of shadow and hatch that whole space in with uniform lines - consistent direction, not too many, not too thin. let some light breathe through the lines. then within that shadow there might be a more occluded area, you can hatch that in as a second pass. thinking about the whole drawing in terms of passes may be useful, rather than noodling specific areas to death (and realising there are massive white spaces later).
don't be too anal about it, try to get a comfortable relaxed action in your repetition of lines. don't be fussy about overshoots and whatever. it's practice, fill up sketchbooks with drawings.
in my opinion excessive crosshatching tends to look a bit shit, a bit of it organically with the rest of the linework here and there is nice but as a rendering style... maybe if you get to old master level or something.
-DO IT ON PAPER WITH A PEN
-do lots of studies
-be playful and loose, but not thoughtless
-have a ref for style
-you'll awful for a considerable time, the toughest part of any technique in art is sticking at it. you will unquestionably get good if you can only manage to keep drawing day after day.
Random stuff.

This is an excellent reply! I was scared nobody was going to respond to me, but this is better than I could have expected.
Does anyone have any pen recommendations? I want to get into traditional inking but I'm not sure what pen to go with. Sorry if this isn't really the thread to be asking in.
any pen, preferably not too thick/flowing/gelly and if it doesn't accrue a ball of ink on the tip after consecutive lines and then deposit the ball on your drawing it's good. if you live in the middle of nowhere and you're going to order some I can recommend specific pens but tbh I've tried all of the most popular ones and there's none that makes me think "this is amazing I'll use this pen for life". if you're going to an art shop just try some and get what feels nice or a few diff ones. even a biro can be nice to draw with

At first glance he looked like a fleshy Halo 4 helmet
Thanks, @Milksprain ! You're right about the anatomy and symmetry issues - don't know what else to add here lol. Gonna try to pay more attention to those in the future and resolve those issues in the sketch phase hopefully.

Fiddling around with my emblem, thinking of updating it. I almost always sign my graphic work with this somehow, as well as often using as my icon online (see left).
Although I might just stick with the one I've had since 2015. It still feels the most distinct and professional, as well as remaining the most recognizable when scaled.
