A friend gave me their spare set of watercolors. I'm looking forward to playing around with them more! https://i.imgur.com/djRWuLJ.png

Matt Kohr on CTRL+Paint often sets his flow to 50% for occasions such as mixing colors and etc, but I found myself enabling pressure for opacity, since flow doesn't seem to make the brush transparent enough unless I set it all the way down to 1%. Is using pressure for opacity be a bad habit to be doing or is that fine?
I tried coming up with a concept design for a stand. Any criticism to improve it will be good. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/490278703729999872/512487916207865877/Dream_Chaser.png
「 O c u l u s R i f t 」 It's an okay concept, but it isn't being conveyed well because of a lack of fundamentals. How about giving this site a looksie? The exercises are easy and always relevant. If I were you, I'd stick an open notebook right next to your computer and passively do a couple of these while also doing your own little doodles. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised on what you can do. Are you using a mouse? It's tough to get the shapes you want with that.
Usually I'm not really drawing seriously since I tend to mostly write, but when it came to the concept of this character I kind of wanted to use the base of Vitamin C from JoJo part 8, as well as giving it the VR headset cause the OG stand for the user uses a VR headset/Valve knuckles in real life. Plus I apologize if it seems like I'm using that as an excuse. I also wanted to give them a robotic jaw but I kind of decided to not do it because I thought it'd be a better choice to show it's robotic, but I feel like that was kind of hypocritical since they got tendons/robotic arms. Also for the question I do use a mouse and use Paint.Net since it's the one program I always use when it comes to making shitposts/doodles. Though I also wanna thank you for the link.

I don't really like it, but it came out just nice enough to avoid going into the wastebasket without preservation.
Does anyone use a computer tablet to draw and if so what do you guys use? I'm considering buying an iPad so I can draw more often rather than setting up to draw on my desktop PC. The only problem I see with an iPad is that I use Clip Studio Paint on my PC and the one for iPad is a sub.
I heard lots of good stuff about procreate, you could try that if you're planning to really get an IPad. Discover Procreate®

The iPad pro is absolutely fantastic, I've had one for a year now and I'm about to sell my Cintiq because I never use it. The Clip Studio Paint subscription is worth it imo, especially if you're a professional and can write it off as a business expense Procreate is also great but it doesn't really replace Clip Studio, I use both all the time for different purposes. Like Clip Studio is great for comics, clean lineart and animation while Procreate is much better for painting and working in looser styles
you may have some bad painting habits if you need your brush to be THAT transparent that is, it's better to actually choose the lighter colour or different hue to paint with rather than doing tonnes of transparent coats with a low opacity brush do you have transfer enabled in your brush settings? here's a caveat to balance eric's post lol, I know more than one serious artist who has bought an ipad & apple pencil and now never use it. because it just doesn't do anything special aside from portability I suppose. and whenever I've gone out sketching and someone's using it in place of a sketchbook I look at the result and think nah you should have brought a sketchbook haha. I don't think there's much "setting up" to draw on your pc, at least not each time if that's what you mean? and if you get a cintiq that means you have at least two monitors, you can dedicate one for refs and so on - that's a very serious advantage. none of that on an ipad, you'd better not need any reference if you're going to do anything serious on that. also superior software, especially if you're going to use PS. Clip has its ios version but there isn't a comparison in workflow between using a keyboard or other key-input for shortcuts and using the touch interface on the ipad. also when I used one I had to disable touch because it broke the whole functionality due to constant input read from my knuckle, bottom of my hand etc. if you're just getting one means of drawing digitally I would earnestly advise a cintiq setup. from what I know eric's case is an extremely rare one (switching to ipad and thus never using cintiq). the ipad is in my view an extra luxury for an artist who is already successful (or just rich to begin with) and wants a really fancy way to do sketches. I mean for the price of one of those things plus the expensive stylus you'd be on your way to building a high-end desktop pc. apple always take the piss with their pricing which is a great reason by itself to err away from their products in my view. one opportunistic parting shot, look at how the apple pencil charges. it's like a joke lmao https://i.gyazo.com/f2fd95c522bc8334c50398429b251e2a.png
I do usually have transfer enabled in my brush settings, and that alone usually works out pretty well for me. Although, I didn't have it enabled when I was trying to mimic the settings that Matt Kohr used for his 50% flow brush. Was I supposed to have transfer enabled in combination with the lowered flow percent?
use whatever works for you, i'm just gonna say that the videos where Matt talks about it are like 4-5 years old the reason why i would advise against low opacity or low flow is because the layer you're painting on is going to be less opaque and a big pain to modify; the only two ways i see it working properly is if you paint with 100% opacity and reduce it on the whole layer (so you can bring it back just in case) or if you're mixing colors but imo pen pressure or mixer brush just give better results. low flow = more brushstrokes to do = looks messy content dump (im sorry) https://66.media.tumblr.com/9235981325f34eaec65231d3a361fa15/tumblr_pikw5e3SSI1u5c47mo1_1280.jpg process: https://66.media.tumblr.com/44dc0e095dba91f542169b15f88854e9/tumblr_pikw5e3SSI1u5c47mo2_1280.gif https://66.media.tumblr.com/1f0aa32a2dd83239884ff044e2daf843/tumblr_pikw5e3SSI1u5c47mo3_1280.jpg https://66.media.tumblr.com/b3797c5b3be5cd071557f42735fa5f30/tumblr_pikw5e3SSI1u5c47mo5_1280.jpg https://66.media.tumblr.com/783a8e71d2e533b3caaa312096f8d9eb/tumblr_pikw5e3SSI1u5c47mo6_1280.jpg https://66.media.tumblr.com/558cb5cf3c12523e23472fc1066e2ba6/tumblr_pikw5e3SSI1u5c47mo4_1280.jpg also doing some generic sci-fi designs https://i.imgur.com/Gz1WSrl.png
well I don't know about matt kohr or what you're supposed to do haha but I would generally advise as I did above, getting the actual colour you need at the value that you need it and painting with that, as opposed to layering transparent brushstrokes. So if I wanted to grade a bit from one colour to the next I would make a mark from one into the other (with the transfer giving an in-between colour at the end of the stroke) and then colour pick the in-between and paint with that - perhaps having deleted the first mark I made to grab it. painting fluently in digital is full of that action, stroke, pick, paint, pick, paint and so on - everything pretty opaque but with a bit of edge flexibility due to transfer. (so full opacity always and fairly high flow, maybe not always full)
thanks mako! i don't usually watch a lot of movies - but i liked the reference photo i'll check it out! (although i still have blade runner 2049 on my backlog lol)
I've been working on a thing and no this was not inspired by Red Dead. Its based on a loose concept that's been brewing in my head for a while, here's some designs I pumped out. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/233659/be260491-6cea-4c77-8c97-84627f726831/susquehanna1.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/233659/7810b3b7-2910-4c3f-9cdf-851e5e0e66a7/saltandpepper.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/233659/5273e5c0-0328-4332-953c-22973719ffd9/jackson1.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/233659/3fda0191-3251-4200-81b5-ce8ec5d40e21/railmanlao1.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/233659/bf4451f8-dd97-41e0-842e-3fb0668849fd/mountainprowler.png
