I'm not sure if this is the appropriate thread but does anyone here know how to clean up the little bits coming out? It's like a pixel aura surrounding the line art which came from how I filled in the drawing and I have no clue how to do it in a way that doesn't involve just slowly going through the drawing https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/58160/02e04923-b007-4c85-8062-95ff841a80ef/image.png
It's because there's antialiasing on your lines which causes the pixels to be a shade somewhere between the line color and the background color at the time of drawing them. Do your lines on a transparent layer and color underneath next time, I guess.
Play around with area scaling in tool properties if you use paint bucket/magic wand to avoid the aura effect around line art.
Personal pro tip for quickly filling areas in Photoshop (may work similarly in other programs): On your Lineart layer, with the Wand tool, select everything outside the character that's supposed to stay transparent in the menu bar on the top, use Select -> Modify -> Expand. This will make the selection scoot closer to your lineart, hopefully right beneath it. I'm using a value of 1px, but thicker lineart may be able to get away with 2px or 3px Invert the selection with ctrl+shift+i or rightclick -> select inverse. Now you've actually got your character selected! add color on a layer below it Only drawback is that this technique doesn't catch very sharp lineart angles, so you may have to give hair spikes for example a once-over. Still much faster than playing "draw by numbers" tho. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/198725/db29967f-8b55-4700-8e7b-d5e31e554e00/filling tutorial warning.jpg

So I am finally biting the bullet and starting to sell my artwork and this is going to be one of the first pieces I sell. I was posting it here asking what you guys think i should do with the blank space? On one hand i thought about doing circular lines that would tighten up as it reaches the bottom of the piece creating a slight gradient but my thin line pens where all used up so im worried the pen i have will create too dark of lines that are too thick and would ruin depth. Also im currently thinking of an 80 price tag, its 11 x 17 and has taken about 12 hours total. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/173616/b09390e9-7796-4afd-9e71-0d1e8f577880/20190524_045007.jpg

I decided to make a portrait out of frustration from not doing anything productive today. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/146362/038dbd40-a936-4479-b876-ce4af992e508/itsaman.png
First time posting in this thread, but I'm experimenting with painting styles and photoshop tools. I got frustrated painting the metal leg bands after I couldn't figure how light was going to bounce around in the drawing down there with no background and indirect lighting so I just deformed and painted over some photos I took so I can get on with my life. Still learned a lot though. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/157697/e4def0a9-68ca-4193-bbc9-dae951599643/ravenslouch.png
Keep in mind using lines should vary in "hardness" as well, for example for the chin she is a woman so she will have a smoother transition on her jawline into her neck, using such a harsh line makes the head look detached from the neck, so there should be a gradient on her lower cheek to show "softness". Hard lines will make anything look hard including skin, so creating softer lines where things such as her wrists connect with the clothes will help. Also try to emulate how shadows function in real life, as a shadow gets closer between two objects it becomes much more defined and sharp, but as it reaches distance it becomes softer. So the shadows on her left hand (her right from her perspective) should have hard shadows on the top of the wrist to show the clothes clinging to her skin because of gravity and then softening as they go lower and thus hang off her wrist. Keeping the idea of gravity and a kind of 3d image in your mind of how things interact is always important, and simplifying it with basic rules of: Closer shadows are sharper. round objects will have soft gradients compared to things like sqaures that will have drastic sharp shading shadows blend and merge into the color of the object as they get further so starting sharp and moving into a blur as it moves away will look very nice. keep in mind most things reflect light, the difference is the material, metal will have sharp highlights and will reflect the colors of things around it so the metal would actually benefit from some "black" reflections from the clothes. Even skin reflects light slightly, so for example curved objects can benefit from some "shadow lighting" where there will be a slight highlight on the edge of shadowed forms, but it can NEVER be brighter than the actual lighted parts as a reflection in shadow will never be brighter than the actual light source. Direct reflections CAN be as bright as the light source but the intensity of the reflection depends on the material, for example metal will have very bright reflections compared to skin which will have a soft shine usually muted because it is not reflective unless sweaty.
dont die thread finally got some time off from dealing with conscripton https://cdnb.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/018/329/043/large/andrei-mishchenko-v-final-tinted-800px.jpg?1558980815 https://cdna.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/018/329/050/large/andrei-mishchenko-v-detail-shot-clean.jpg?1558980775
I don't think it's absolutely necessary to fill in the space. Additional details I feel would just detract from the focus of the picture. If you absolutely have to, do something simple like a cloudy sky so the details can continue to lead the eye throughout the image.
Let's stretch the page some more. https://66.media.tumblr.com/5c1b1612b6d37faf94d5d06d39c63450/tumblr_pq3j1vE39Z1ugmzi0_540.jpg https://66.media.tumblr.com/85b580bc6b8049ceca079a9a9d775944/tumblr_pqgws55mJN1ugmzi0_540.jpg https://66.media.tumblr.com/1b4b75da5fdd73daaa3d5c1b4873dcd1/tumblr_pqiejelfXN1ugmzi0_540.jpg https://66.media.tumblr.com/66f8e8f6f9279d138b0d9c501316104f/tumblr_pqny0eSA0B1ugmzi0_540.jpg https://66.media.tumblr.com/ff7512a28e54bea2cf01be9d6e76847a/tumblr_pqpqjhvDwD1ugmzi0_540.jpg https://66.media.tumblr.com/0d24881026442584aeb968709e7b780a/tumblr_pr4o1gFBy41ugmzi0_540.jpg https://66.media.tumblr.com/be12bfec91a26767f41bdeff5cc3c5bc/tumblr_pr0ud5tsFC1ugmzi0_540.jpg https://66.media.tumblr.com/47e39ef8a06034e940537f49bd8ada82/tumblr_prl9iiSISt1ugmzi0_540.jpg https://66.media.tumblr.com/b5d0a4b55168830bfa453f65b5c5237f/tumblr_prmyllff4f1ugmzi0_540.jpg https://66.media.tumblr.com/b4e0a04e723d8cb621ba21868bf568b5/tumblr_prqo6mvX5v1ugmzi0_540.jpg https://66.media.tumblr.com/1ec048b827a9e003ea85be3332abed61/tumblr_pruvjwRVjV1ugmzi0_540.jpg https://66.media.tumblr.com/11c823a442876135615c27624a024b4a/tumblr_ps9d6z1YrY1ugmzi0_540.jpg

So this is the 2nd piece I am selling and i am at the halfway point on it as it requires its back legs and shadows around the entire edges of the piece to emphasize the glow. I also including some in between shots to show my process on this, done entirely in ink using sizes 02-05 micron pens even the base sketch. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/173616/8948131d-0132-4938-ad70-35fc5fa1ba46/20190525_010114.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/173616/77954c25-d464-4ae4-a841-3fd4f7b4a061/20190528_022152.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/173616/f5046df9-d845-480e-8a1e-8ca76185337b/20190530_121350.jpg

Bought Nier: Automata on a playstation store sale, finished the game in 35 hours, and then sketched this with a 2B pencil. (photo taken with my shitty phone camera) https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/258018/99def9c2-751e-49ba-8e1c-54623059e32b/_20190603_002412.JPG
Finally got on my butt and finished this, the stipling for the background was the main thing i was dreading so i put it off a few days. I also included a process shot i didnt have space to include before that shows a bit of an in between on how i was shading the rocks. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/173616/14e483b6-4c5a-48f4-911b-8385845afa07/20190605_014500.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/173616/664f4955-f12e-456a-868e-2020ebb1cfa7/20190527_050745.jpg
I do like the stippling all over the place, and how the scales/spikes further up have a good sense of depth to them. I think the figure is the weakest part of the image though, my eye is drawn toward him but he doesn't feel as well thought out as the creature.
Yea I drew him first before I decided to start stipling, and I agree he is the weakest part though I am unsure how to improve it because of how dark the shadows already are on him, I might try to add some smoother stipling gradients on the arms since there is decent amount of white there. I also need a scanner as this was done via picture so for example the left side of the picture looks "blurred" when it is in fact just as sharp as the right side of the picture.
I'm not sure if acrylic will be good to use to paint over and rework, simply because the paper may age and change color slightly leaving the white acrylic sticking out, also im not sure how a layer of acrylic will accept ink over it. Since it's ink it may just be a 'live and learn' situation. The figure, while not up to the rest of the image, is not that bad, I think it does its job, just could be more exciting in some ways, but again, that's just something to keep in mind for next time. In the future I would definitely recommend pencilling a light sketch of the figure to get pose and proportions down before moving to ink.
Reanimating this thread with some sketches.
