Did a new thang: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1213/347b2f68-f965-436d-8947-ce11377395d0/lowresriver_hq_1.mp4 Dang its a bit large. Anyways, its rendered from viewport at 120x120 then scaled up, pluss some post work. loop and nicer size here: Jakob Appleby on Instagram

I know people give you a bit of crap for overdoing your materials but honestly I love your style.
https://youtu.be/fo56z-bwlpg Some more shader stuff. Been improving my ES 3.0 rendering demo to be as good as it can.

Super happy with how it's come out. These last pieces will be a pain in the ass though, I can tell.
I have no idea what I'm doing https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/58145/cb41fb04-a426-456c-891e-013929cc8ac8/1111111.jpg
I have no idea why I thought this would be a "quick" thing to model https://sketchfab.com/models/3ecf3cfa9c2f4622836bc043d3f46d58
That is DAMN GOOD.
Not been on in ages, theres been some really nice stuff posted! I'm mid way through this project and its actually going well this time, lots of flat colours right now, but that will be becoming pattern and line work soon. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/157900/885fbfa4-c267-4294-a1b6-5fce1e867745/1.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/157900/e6ddc067-f939-4f7b-b385-4b58246c7bfd/2.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/157900/31573ccc-5b93-4ca8-bf90-19ee639aa852/3.jpg
Heya, haven't posted here for a million years but finally got some time + desire to 3D model again. Working on a sniper rifle, concept art isn't mine: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/132317/fd2a91fa-162f-4966-b8f4-a0cf551a8358/wip_01.jpg
Nothing is more annoying than overused random unnecessary bandages over a gun
Especially when those wrappings magically curve/bend/look oddly loose despite being pulled taut. Wait, why the fuck are there bandages on the scope? What purpose does that serve?
What about an insanely heavy machete mounted on it like a bayonet?
My main concern here is the fact that the machete bayonet doesn't have unnecessary bandages on it.
Great feedback buddy, I'm sure that's gonna be really helpful for the person who posted it
I get the point hah. I think it's a bit stupid too but I want to learn to make an accurate model from a concept art image, at least to some degree. I'll probably try making the bandages
Just remember that cloth wrappings are supposed to either protect the weapon from dirt or act as an extra grip. Complete the concept in a logical way and you'll be better off for it. Don't mummify your guns.
Well, I do think it is pretty common sense what it is supposed to do. Again, I didn't make the concept art, and I think the guy behind it was just enjoying artistic freedom. Sort of like that guy that wanted to put blue tape everywhere on his Fallout weapons. But if anyone has the wish to mummify a weapon, I think they should go ahead and do that. After all, we are 3D modelling for fun, right? No one will die if a digital model isn't completely realistic. It does not surprise me how it's always Americans insisting on being very correct with weapon details But with this said, I did not actually plan to make the cloth wrapping around the scope, let alone the massive machete itself at all. The machete looks easy to model but not really enjoyable per se. I'm trying to learn Blender and Substance Designer during the modelling of this weapon.
The undead should be able to own firearms like the rest of us. Rise up.
Anyway, in terms of actual feedback, I think a lot of the topology is really inefficient - you could accomplish the same shape with a fraction of the quads. Especially along the horizontal axes, there's far more edge loops than are needed, especially for what are essentially the flat sides of the gun, and the bumper thing on the stock (is it meant to be like cut out of a tire?) has far more polygons than it needs.
Thanks, useful feedback. Good question about the stock. I'm having a hard time to see what the materials on the gun are. I assume most things are metal, but the stock looks like rubber, and indeed looks like it's from a tire? It's a bit hard to see.
It looks like a bit from a rubber tire in the concept. Also from a practical standpoint having rubber on the stock is the more comfortable thing than a big hunk o metal back there going into your shoulder.
WIP, the wood looks a bit more like veins, and the cloth looks very cellshaded at the moment. Is there a 'perfect' way to do cloth wrapping in Blender? I'm using a helix, scaling it, convert to mesh, extrude to get some thickness, shrinkwrap and then moving the vertices around a little to achieve some randomness. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/132317/6896290b-030e-438a-8a72-97da29420cf4/wip_02.png
A bit late since you were first asking for help - but: The grip and stock area of the gun need to be rounded out a ton - right now its a slightly chamfered box shape. You can/should check up on multiple sources of reference to get a better idea of the shapes since this concept art can only imply it to a certain degree. https://gunsmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/sniper3.jpg Here's a few similiar shaped sniper rifles where you can tell the roundness from the specular highlight on them. Otherwise just imagine holding the gun as it is right now - it would be extremely painful to hold for a longer time or even attempt to fire. As for how to best do the bandage - you can try to extrude a simple stretched box shape along a spline and tweak it around until it fits close enough and then just use a Lattice to make it a even better fit.
Not really a 3D artist but I'm doing some weird shit with shaders and I think this counts https://giant.gfycat.com/FantasticEvilBighorn.webm
Finished this thingy after picking up Substance Painter recently. https://www.artstation.com/artwork/zbOX4
So, question, how many of you here work in the industry?
