I really enjoyed the other track you posted and I also think this one is excellent. Your command of dissonance is impressive and this one also reminded me a bit of the Half Life 2 soundtrack (but I don't mean that in a bad way and am not suggesting you copied it.) Right, the following is something I have posted before, but I never got any feedback. I think I was 19 or 20 when I did this, so it's not brilliant - still, I think the ending is cool and the crowd seemed to enjoy it. Thanks in advance for listening... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx1cmaz1OMA
Came to listen to this track because Dan the Man was hyping it up and I wasn't disappointed. Great vibe and good driving beat, my favourite type of dnb. I love the synth sound and the drums are so clean. Only thing I might criticize is that the intro / outro don't feel totally fitted to the rest of the song. They need to some how be more... moody? Its mainly in the intro right when the drums start, the melody feels too light somehow. But man, once the main chunk of the song starts I'm jiving hard.
So I'm looking to buy a proper, lasting digital piano (or stage piano I'm not sure what would be the best option) that feels close enough to an actual piano and I really haven't been researched in the market for this sorta thing for many years so I'd like to hear if anyone out there have any suggestions or tips. My budget would be around 1000-1500 euros, give or take.
i usually try to make a video that goes along with a piece of music i make, i feel like it adds some kind of atmosphere, do any of you do similar stuff? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SGsm6U3otI footage is from a road trip me and the fam went on a while back
Gotta comment on previous peoples work. I realize this thread is essentially dead, but it can still be useful if everyone tries to be constructive and helpful. @PaxMayne , the music is decent, I liked it the most once the drums and some vocal samples came on. I don't really know how to properly critique ambient music, but this seems to be doing the job for the most part. I would say it is a little on the simple side though. Something I like with long droning ambient tones is if they swell or change texture here and there. Additionally, I felt like one more layer that was popping in and out, maybe a chorus or something, could have benefited the song and helped fill it out. The video started off as essentially over use of overlays and uninteresting footage, so it wasn't very good. However, at about 1:29 when the water started pouring over, it got a lot better. The colours, texture and flow were a lot more interesting and I thought went very well with the music. It helped that the footage was interesting enough that you didn't through 100 other things over it. My favourite part was about 2:05 when the water was just kind of streaking down a super rich blue and there was the dark greenish base with the lights flitting through. Graphically it was a nice mixture, even if it was just overlays. - Sampled a little of my mom's piano and just mixed it in with a weird experiment at a boom bap kind of beat: https://soundcloud.com/user-229460575/wasteland-walkin
Is anyone experienced in using Cantabile, Voicemeeter, VSTs, ASIO and Guitar Rig 5? This is gonna sounds about as complicated as it is, though I'm not even sure how necessary Voicemeeter is in this process but anyhow; I'm using my guitar through my PC's Line-In port, which worked fine with GR5 and ASIO4All, though the sound is quite poor quality. Now, I've got it going Line In > Voicemeeter > Cantalibe > Pedal plugins > GR5 plugin > Voicemeeter(?) > Output. Overall it sounds MUCH better than running it purely through GR5, however certain notes, particularly on the top string will clip horrendously and I don't know what to do about it. Hey do you like synthesizers? Come post in Synthesizer Discussion
Thanks for your kind words regarding my song. I completely agree with your criticisms. I think all your music I've heard is bloody brilliant. The percussion and bending melody at the end was very emotive, moody and creepy. It's a good length and I don't think it needs any other sections. I'd really appreciate it if you continued to post your work! I have the Roland HP503. It was £1200 and has a decent sound with inbuilt speakers. Hah, this is a great idea. I enjoyed it. My only suggestion would be a descending, chromatic bass at certain points. Would be cool to hear a longer version with different parts and stuff! Right, I'm kinda embarrassed to post this new song of mine as the recording isn't perfect. Still, I'd appreciate feedback! https://soundcloud.com/mikehawkbiscuit/deceive-everybody2
That was awesome. The song writing was great and the piano was amazing. Got notes of Radiohead, Coldplay, The Darkness, and Gord Downie. I really can't criticize anything about the song writing itself, it was very well constructed and performed. The final chorus / outro was awesome. The only thing I noticed were some things about the vocals, which I hope you take as friendly criticism / suggestions (I have no professional voice training / knowledge): The vocals could be tightened up in terms of pitch / solidity in a couple spots. The cleanness of the vocals is especially important at the upper end of your natural register which this sounds like it is. There are some places where you really nail the higher pitched stuff and other areas where it comes off as quite nasal / shrill / or fake falsetto (if you know what I mean). I'm not totally sure what to suggest in these places: maybe find the notes you can hit and write for those, drop an octave or half octave everywhere else? Or maybe add some more breath in your voice at these areas maybe? Definitely work your diaphragm hard. Or, find a way to exaggerate any quirks of your voice in a way that is pleasing enough and can maybe become your unique / iconic personal sound? Even with the above things, I listened several times, it was really good. If you have never heard of Gord Downie, I highly suggest you listen to him, I think you could get a lot of inspiration from him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZO1MgKRMMw
I really appreciate the detailed feedback. Please don't be concerned about me taking it the wrong way - I don't like it when people just say everything we've done is perfect. I definitely agree that my voice needs a lot of work. Main reason I tend to sing so high is because my lower voice sounds even worse! In terms of the nasally thing, I think it is due to me having a dust mite allergy. If you have any tips for reducing that though, I'm all for trying it. I'm glad you liked it otherwise though. I do love Radiohead, and a lot of my music is clearly inspired by them with some Muse and Coldplay thrown in. I'll have to check out 'The Darkness', as I have not heard of them. Will also check out more from the band who wrote the song in that video you added. Cheers.
The darkness comparison was really just a couple vocal similarities, the song it self is not like them at all lol. He tends to sing in a higher register and does some interesting things with his voice.
So I ended up getting the Kawai ES8 and I just got it setup and it's amazing. I feel a bit dirty for saying this but I think I like it more than any acoustic piano I've ever had the chance of playing on.
Digital pianos are great for lots of reasons, such as transposing, multitrack recording and different voices, but the sound, even on very high quality ones, doesn't match up with a £2,000 minigrand or upright, at least for me. Glad you're happy with it though.
Acoustic pianos are always special and a thrill to play because every single one sounds and feels unique, I especially don't mind old pianos that are a little out of tune, they're a blast to play.
I'm lucky enough to have access to a 1922 Steinway concert grand that's been kept up remarkably well at my old high school. Even though physically it's not in the best shape it sounds excellent and is one of my favorite pianos to come back to when I can. The school bought it new in '22 and has had it ever since. Was a couple thousand dollars back then and is now probably worth upwards of a couple hundred thousand.
I totally agree with you regarding every piano sounding unique. Whenever I see a piano I'm unfamiliar with, I'm compelled to play it. I especially like what Agnus Obel and others do where they remove the front panel of an upright piano to make a new sound. Here's an example of what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1wgaFJ0750 Piano takes a while to start but I love the warmth of the sound pianos like that make.
I've been thinking of illustrating and animating a Gondola video for a while, figured I'd see if anyone here had made any music they'd like to offer for me to add some visuals. The video I'm making will be a base image with a few animated elements on top, thrown around in After Effects to make it look a little nicer You can see my work here, feel free to message me on Instagram or post music here If you want a few examples of the kind of videos you can see them here
No idea if this sort of thing will be what you're looking for, but I wrote this many moons ago and have no real plans for it, so you could use this if you wanted: https://soundcloud.com/mikehawkbiscuit/change-wav
That's great! I've begun working on something, may be a while but I'll contact you on Soundcloud once I have something to show
Smeetin, I like your tracks on this page. Everyone in here is pretty good if not better than good. I think I'd like to here more of a "big room" effect with both tracks, and maybe a little more varied-pitched snares or some kind of drum pattern to add complexity. I don't know if this good criticism at all, but good job. Hi everyone, I'm an old FP user and made a new account her. Also, a short introduction... I have been producing since Hurricane Irma of 2017, so that makes it 1 year pretty much now since I started *seriously* getting into music production. I played with Fruity Loops when I was a kid, but was not serious. I'll post two songs, feel free to listen. First one, I made this in like 2 hours tonight. I like to produce every day but don't usually make too much that is decent. This one was fun though. Not finished I think. https://soundcloud.com/dillon-m-jepsen/movie-star A second one, a better song that I did in the past. This is one of my better ones. https://soundcloud.com/dillon-m-jepsen/new-age I would like to hear some thoughts on the second one, but thoughts on the first one is okay too (it's just not finished).
I really like the vibe of this beat. Reminds me of mid 90s trip-hop. The first :10 seconds are golden; the rest felt a little too erratic at least in a musical sense, jarring. Maybe change the pitch of the samples to fit better. Otherwise enjoyable sound. Dis a track I'm makin' for a friend. I'm really not settled on the synth sound from 1:51 to 2:00ish. I want the effect but just haven't found the right tone. Also I definitely need to re-record the guitar but I just moved so I haven't fully set up my new space. https://soundcloud.com/ay-ay-ron/legba2-wav
I like the overall vibe and mood, with a little work it could be perfect for a certain style of music. The main guitar melody sounds straight out of some early 2000s pop to me, like Nelly Furtado or something. In the first 30 seconds (but elsewhere as well), the percussion could use a bit of work imo. The symbols are a little harsh and maybe could be a little quieter? Additionally, the bongo sounding drum really doesn't feel right, kind of off beat or whatever. I get what it is supposed to sound like, but it somehow doesn't work imo. The sections in-between the main melodies are a little harsh and kind of chaotic. I feel like this whole song is supposed to be very chill and summery, but overall there are lots of kind of harsh sounds. I would do a pass to maybe just try to soften everything up and really give it a smooth feel. - Tried some more stuff using some organ samples from my mom: https://soundcloud.com/user-229460575/hymn-hop
ayay and Smeetin, Both great vibes, and great use of instrumentals. I really killed this one. https://soundcloud.com/dillon-m-jepsen/cardi-b-ft-migos-drip-director-9-bass-remix
Hey, first time poster here in the creationism corner since I only got into trying to make music not so long ago. Speaking of which i only managed to finish a single song. It was based on a beat i made on Beepbox a handful of years ago. I just got some random picture i had on my pc for the background, by the way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBbYQ00Pnms What do you guys think?
Pretty good, reminds me a bit of how I used to sound when I first started making music. Here's some things you could work on that I think would go a long way: (note: I'm kind of biased towards relaxing music) Composition: The melody seems a bit complex during some parts given the tempo of the track. Some things you could try to combat this is to either simplify the melody or slow the tempo. I noticed there's no bass instrument. Adding one could definitely make the mix feel less empty, even if it's just one note per bar. Adding background noise also helps to combat emptiness. Reverb, white noise, rain, etc. Most DAWs have a reverb plugin and the rest you can find on a site like freesound. Drums: I noticed the drum pattern loops all the way through (1-bar loop?). Changing up the drum pattern helps a lot to combat repetitiveness. Vocals or a change in melody (which you sort of have here and there) would also help with repetitiveness. Assuming it is a 1-bar loop, what you can try is to convert it into a 4-bar loop and shift the kicks around a bit on the parts where it would have repeated. The instruments used suggest a chill song, but the drum samples feels like they're used for techno (I might be wrong there), so at the very least I would suggest looking for more realistic samples. There's tons of free ones if you Google it depending on your tastes, or feel free to ask. Mastering: The track in general seems a bit quiet (at least I had to turn my volume up to clearly hear it). Depending on the DAW used, you can increase the volume of the entire track, but make sure to watch your levels that it doesn't peak too often go above 0db. For example, Ableton has a Utility plugin to increase your gain and a Limiter plugin to deal with the peaking. FL Studio has a plugin called Maximus which is kind of like a combination between a multiband compressor and a limiter. Anyways good luck in your future tracks
Oh wow, thanks for the feedback! I should start off by saying that I've been tinkering around with music making as a really off to the side project, even more now that i moved out and had to leave my desktop at home. That being said, this post is making me consider continuing on my laptop, I wish I could remaster that last song, but I left the files back home. I guess I'll move onto another song and leave it at that. I saved your post in txt file, by the way, so I can read it a few times over, since my knowledge of music production is almost as deep as going "woo, that sounds nice". On the composition part, I really need to work on how tempo works, but the bass instrument is there, I even added when my brother noted how empty the song was. Its just a bit faint, I guess, and the song does still feel a bit empty, but not as much as before. Also the background noise does sound like a good idea! I tried looking for some sounds to add at the time but never found one that I liked, though. Now that you mention it, the drums do sound a bit repetitive and I'll try working on it, and I wanted to add vocals, but while I was making the song I felt vocals were and undertaking on it's own, and opted for a instrumental only song. And honestly I had no idea what genre of music I was going for. I'm guessing my music taste is, while broad, a bit superficial. Finally, yeah, I only realized how low the volume on the track was when I uploaded it, didn't think too much of it and left it at that. I had never realized how important mastering was before, and by the time I got to it, I was so eager of completing the song I rushed it. I'll be sure to try using actual plugins! Again, thank you so much! I was hoping for someone saying "meh it's okay" when I posted it here, and even though I made that a couple of months ago, it made me really want to give it another try! Oh and I checked out your soundcloud, everything I've listened to sounds amazing!
https://soundcloud.com/thepsychedelicliz/lo-fi-space-echo Just messing around with the Telecaster a bit. Was able to get 2 delay pedals to coordinate fairly, though this isn't a great example. Lot's of noise, so be prepared.
I covered Northlane: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZkIWEJVK8A There are some cool effects in there - some nice ambient tones when you dial back the gain. Not wrong about the noise though lol
does anybody have experience with using an android tablet to control ableton? I want some impressions before I shell out money for an app, got the tablet though
somebody listened to my album 10 times that makes me happy https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/596/96be25bd-9434-491c-9c4d-72160b6e6648/Screenshot_Artists_20181026-101419.png
