Can I ask a business question? (General photography thread is locked so this is the next best place).
A client contacted me for an engagement proposal session that would last about an hour. He asked for my rate and I told him $300 in total for the shooting and editing. I would have to rent another camera and lens (Canon Mk3, 70-200mm) to be able to shoot the proposal well without being in their face during it which would have cost $180 for 3 days (smallest period I could find) so I'd only be making $120 from the shoot. He said that he couldn't justify $300 on it and asked if I would reduce the cost if he edited the RAW's instead of me as he is a photographer and knows Lightroom. I thought that was a crazy thing to ask a fellow photographer especially as a discount rather than a huge price increase. I said no. He then asked if I would reduce my fee if I only shot them for 15 minutes instead of an hour but at this point, I didn't feel it was worth dealing with him personally or having $4000 of rented equipment around my neck just for 15 minutes of shooting for a tiny profit margin. I also didn't feel like I could do a good job with my current equipment without ruining their proposal moment and I'm not hurting for portfolio pieces anyway right now to do it for no profit.
Was asking for $300 unreasonable in the first place on my part?
Don't give the raw files. Reason is, you're giving your work to him. In cases like wedding photography, its important not to, because if you just started out, and you had some unglam shots, they could potentially cherrypick the bad photos, post on facebook, and potentially kill your business.
Yep, thats why I was shocked to be asked by another 'photographer' for the files.
You should own a 5D3 and a 70-200 if you want to charge $300 for an hours shoot tbh
You want me to own over $4000 worth of equipment to be able to charge low photography rates? I was being kind to him by not charging him the rent fee on top of the $300 so I don't see how that would have changed anything.
👋
this place is a lot quieter than it used to be 😢
Nothing wrong with renting, I do it as well but it has to be value for money. If you don't do engagement shoots often, taking the hit on this one for the rental might have been worthwhile to secure future work and a solid portfolio. But if the sums don't add up, find another way! Is the kit you own really not enough to do that kind of shoot? $120 for an hour, sure after gas it might not have been much, but it would be a happy client, a good review and a solid bit of portfolio. It wasn't like it was gonna be free.
Couldn't you borrow a 70-200 from a mate in return for a 12 pack?
I don't get many opportunities to take photos, but I absolutely love when I get to try my hand at capturing things.
Here's some of my favorite pictures I've taken. All shot with my sony a6000, using either the kit lens (16-50mm) or a 55-210mm. Touchups done in DxO PhotoLab.

sorry if that's too many images
Man I got so confused when I saw some of the photos here first, then again a few days later on SA and got the gnarliest déjà vu.

For anyone starting out, a 70-200 is a hefty sum for a lens, you could get a second hand of an older model, but it'll take some saving.
I know it takes some saving, how do you think I bought mine lol.
Of course, I'm not disagreeing with that point, I'm just saying
Personally I'll rent till the jobs could cover the cost quickly.
or if you feel super confident, credit cards

Where are you standing for the South Bridge shot or is it a drone?
Took two photos of my brother that I'm pretty proud of.

hotel, went and agreed access a day or two before. they were very kind and accommodating
I finally got round to making my garage properly dark. I hadn't planned on doing so today, so wasn't quite prepared.
Turned out the papers we had were past their best and came out fairly fogged. They were also too large for the enlarger and easel. I still had fun, just got to get fresh papers

We're not allowed to hold a pride parade in Singapore so we had to hold a pride picnic called Pink Dot. This year is the 10th year, and I was happy to be apart of it.
One of the shots I took, every year they light up with pink lights in support for the freedom to love.
If you guys like to see more, I'll be happy to upload.
