Someone mind helping me out?
Im currently making some buisness cards and leaflets for a company, I know why and how a bleed works but the printing guys are asking for a 3mm bleed on the pdf?
I added 3mm to both the height and width of the canvas, should I also add a line or something to show that this is where it should be cut?
Glad to hear it! Your work is awesome.
A logo I made recently for a game someone I know is working on, a harvest moonish village building kind of thing.

If you are working in InDesign there is a specific bleed setting which will not expand the canvas but will create a secondary border at the specified distance from the canvas, then you simply stretch any full-bleed graphics to that border. If you aren't in InDesign than I'm afraid I have no idea.

Ya sure, thanks for catching that! Although, the link displays and reacts correctly on my computer? Either way, repost:

no problems, thanks for the advice; will be useful for print work this college year
realized I could expand the canvas size on photoshop by 6mm on both H x W, with the guidelines in place

Not bad, definitely not boring, but maybe not integrated super well - couple comments couple suggestions.
- I like the Raul Panther Colour effect you did, mixed with the aviators reflecting the keyboard / mixing equipment I think it conveys an accurate message as to the vibe and content of whatever this thing is (movie, book, video...)
- The 3 I's behind it are on the right track, but somehow are slightly off. If I were to guess, I would say that the dark line on the left side of each I gives it slightly too much detail to be a background element. I would also suggest that maybe the I's should be slightly more squat and probably bolder all around, they should really GROUND the other text and even slightly define the invisible square that contains them.
- The other comments I have aren't really text related so I won't go into much detail. In my opinion there is too much colour variation within the image. You have the SUPER bright and vivid pinks and greens of Raul Panther (which are great, don't change those too much), you have the spectrum of pink - purple - blue that makes up the background and three I's (which is decent, but the pink should probably be tweaked to be closer to the pink of the "raul panther," and then you have the natural and muted colours of the face in the background (which I think is slightly too covered up personally.)
If I were to suggest something I would say increase the amount of the image visible, or if you don't want to do that, then simply scale up what is there to fill the box more. A closer & bigger shot of those lenses could be pretty cool. Then I would use a pink overlay of the same colour as "Raul Panther" to really bring out the pinkish lighting currently IN the photo to try to build subtle unity between the main image and the main text. If you are feeling wild maybe try to do a bright green overlay on the rest of the image? Then I would tweak the pink - purple- blue spectrum of the background elements: making the pink of the same variety as Raul Panther, and the purple slightly more muted (at least in the three I's).
Hope those suggestions help, keep in mind they are all opinions and someone else might really like everything entirely as they are. All in all, I like the direction, just some tweaks needed. Something I would advise is that text overlaid directly on an image is often a lot more interesting because it can play off of a lot more stuff and there is a contrast between texture in the image and lack of texture in the font.

Here is a quick 1 hour render I did for a 3 day urban intervention competition as part of my architecture schooooolin. (About all I'm doing these days. I'll try to upload renders and the sort when I get them).

thoughts?
Not bad.
Couple thoughts. I don't know what the meaning of falling desk is, but the logo doesn't seem to relate to the concept visually, but first impression.
Kerning is good generally, however I wonder if "falling" would look better since its a cursive font with the letters connected to each other.
Also, the tail of the 'g' looks pretty whack.
Good start though, just needs some tweaking.
How do you begin with Graphic Design? Like, what are some of the essentials that I need to know? Do I need any more programs aside from PS?
[editline]7th October 2015[/editline]
Also OP that's some fine-ass logos.

There's no true way to begin in it. The best you can do is jump straight in, start posting stuff places, getting and listening to the feedback you receive. To help you along you could read up on design concepts like the golden ratio, rule of thirds, typography, colour and such. Even reading up on some design history can help a bit, if you're into that thing. Try sign up on websites like dribbble to see what others are doing and apply some of what they're doing to your own work.
As for programs, Photoshop is obviously a solid start, but you'll also want to know Illustrator.

Totally bullshit name. My desk literally fell off it's legs and on to the floor maybe a day or two before I had to have the name and I was still salty about it

Learn the principles of design, lots of different versions exist, but the standards are harmony, balance, unity, contrast, emphasis, rhythm etc...
This is a good summary: https://www.getty.edu/education/teachers/building_lessons/principles_design.pdf
In terms of programs, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop are definitely crucial. Sketchup can be useful too. However, if you are just beginning, learning to sketch ideas out is also critical as visual brain-storming is a vital skill. Also, learning to draw something with your hand is very useful in figuring out the best way to draw it on the computer and is much quicker for generating ideas.
Don't bother doing competitions too much, they aren't really useful learning experiences.
Look out for tutorials, but don't just produce the same result, use the skills of the tutorial to make your own unique design / image. Without doing this it is very hard to actually learn the tools properly.
PieClock has good suggestions too, but this is all I can think of right now while my brain is fried.
Thanks for the compliment too!
-- (FOUND AN OLD POST FROM WHEN SOMEONE ELSE ASKED)
Unless you are planning on going to school, the way to learn is simply to do it a lot. I started off about 12 years ago making "signatures" for forums using gimp and following tutorials (but making my own thing using the techniques shown; which is important).
This taught me how to use the tools, what blending modes could do, what colours worked together for the most part, and some basic typography. By no means am I saying people should make signatures *shudder,* I simply am saying that as long as you are working with the tools and trying, anything can be a valuable start / learning tool.
However, knowing what I know now, I would suggest doing some basic reading (even just web articles) on the Principles of Design (contrast, balance, harmony, unity, etc) to start with. Then maybe some on basic make up of fonts, basic colour theory, and grids. Also, learn to sketch. On paper is probably best, but I myself sketch on the computer. Throw lots of ideas on to the page. I always figure that you have to get all of the bad ideas out of your brain before the good ones can come out. Iterations are your friend, if something doesn't look good right off the bat, don't give up, tweak and tweak again as long as you still think there is a valuable idea being explored. You may still end up joining it with a complete other idea though.
Oh, and K.I.S.S. ("Keep it simple stupid") is a rule you should keep with you. Simple doesn't mean the same as plain, however you have to be very aware of the point when adding something more no longer helps the design. Less is more (more often than not).
Then I would say just starting making things. Follow tutorials, but use the techniques shown to make your own unique work / try using the techniques shown for other things while watching (making exactly what the tutorial shows does very little to help learn in my opinion). It is good practice often to look at inspiration or something that you really like and try to recreate it yourself also. Make challenges for yourself.
Hello anyone and everyone,
I was referenced to this site by a graphic designer Stefan Klassen, he was unable to take on my task but said the community here is very helpful and very good at creating something from nothing!
I found a few overlays and Twitch banners on this site and they were very clean and well done!
I'm in need of your expertise and enthusiasm for creativity!
Below i'll link you to an imgur image.
it's a very rough image of what I would love to have but please feel free to add your own creativity!!!
imgur.com/JNOAKH2.jpg
I am not sure if i want the pulses to be centered or at the begining and end of my username ( INVERTED ).
with this image have the colors centered but fade out to black (bottom) and Neon/Cyan (top).
imgur.com/NCxFWcB.jpg - I prefer this one (second draft)
I'm still unsure of where I want the pulses.
with this image I have the graying trim around the pulses but as the pulse stretches vertically I would like it to white out and then return back to grey as is continues horizontally.
perhaps you could add lightning strikes randomly throughout the image as a background view.
Again, feel free to add your creativity or anything else that may make it look better! remember, you're the artist!!
I would like to thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to read this and if you do take on this project I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I am willing to negotiate a minor payment on the project as well!!
Sincerly,
Inverted

No one's gonna do work for someone they've never met or talk to before getting paid -- especially a "minor" payment. Try harder.

Blue Western
Looks like a erection pill company.
I suppose this belongs here- over the past few months I've been developing a tabletop wargame and accompanying graphical assets. I'm not much of an artist, so I took inspiration from the GDW space wargames of the 70s and 80s with contrasting silhouettes for playing counters.
These counters are intended to be sized to half an inch on each side. On the green sheet I'm considering going back and reverting the text/graphic color on the faded third column to black for the sake of consistency and clarity.

You too could be one of them! Come out of that box and get posting my friend! I check the thread daily, but people don't post super regularly.
I mostly do Facebook covers, T-shirt designs, wallpapers or game skins nowadays. Nothing special, but I might share something later.

Get posting. This thread needs more content!
Since this great thread needs more content, I decided to post some of the album covers/banners I did the past few months, most of them for a musical project that I haven't genuinely started yet, and my entry for this years MOTY Logo contest on ModDB. If you guys like them I can post some more.
Thoughts on these?

Nice work above by the way. I prefer the 2nd Vice sun version you've done.
In the moddb image I'm not sure if that says 2015 or 2016. Very confusing font.
Cool, I joined the slack, though I'm not sure if I'll use it ever.
Incoming content. I mostly do ice-hockey related stuff or tiny personal projects like game skins, cover photos, logos I always scrap...

Note regarding the last photo: Made the "JSME JEDEN TÝM" and "EAS" banners. Small stuff, but it's nice to see it in the arena. And no, I didn't make the lion logo.
Nice stuff! Thanks for sharing! Good simple work, but feels well put together.
Man, a lot of talent in this thread. You guys make a lot of nice looking stuff, I'd try graphics design myself but I have no creativity or knowledge about design, photoshop, illustrator, so on.
