Are these standard playing cards? Or specialty cards for a tabletop game? Without knowing my only suggestion would be that there is a bit too much of the same colour tone going on. Try adding a bit more contrast somehow, like through some white in there a little bit somewhere. It might look pretty good if either the border of the background (but not both) was white. Also, the edge effects on the character in the middle are pretty gross, simple is almost always better. If you want a bevel, try just a basic bevel.
I like some of the details you have going on though, if they are playing cards, you are definitely on the right track in terms of making them look classy / casino-y.
They're supposed to be tabletop game cards. The idea was to make 5 factions, each with a different card design, but I'll probably stick to standard palette swapping.
Anyway, thanks for the tips! Will tone down the details on the JP thing and fix the other things.
Started working on some card designs for a school project. Decided to do a prototype card back to get things started.
Any tips on how to improve it would be great to hear.

get rid of all the ugly blending options, eg stroke and emboss and drop shadow etc
[editline]13th November 2015[/editline]
they should all never be used unless they are subtle and highly edited from the default values

Yh this. All I see is bevel and emboss.

Your welcome! If you can you should upload a picture of the finished uniform.
3 weekz 0 postz damn! I had to get my shovel out to find this thread
Anyway here's my intro digital media final project (just a title card with links to our other projects from the year; interactive pdf)

It had to have a quote—that was not my idea.
Ya sorry Danjee! I have been incredibly busy with first semester finals of my architecture masters, so I haven't had time to post stuff in here, it is coming though! I will post my competition boards in a couple days after finals.
I'm afraid I can't give too many comments on the title card you posted as I don't know how it was presented.
Did some more work on the card backs, reworking them by the advice I was given here.
They're still kinda wip-ish, but most of the cards is done, the only thing left would be changing the stroke colors on the green one to white, like in the red one, and decrease the visibility of the symbols behind the characters.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as the other 3 card backs will share the same design.

Well, it is a major improvement from the last one. Still could use some colour / tone variation to really give it a certain pizzazz. I like the green one more than the red one, couldn't say why.
Also, too many differing obvious textures. It is okay to apply some texture to like the whole thing, but everything having its own texture is a bit weird.

Nice. That particular effect is fairly overdone, but i still like it personally. I like the color choice as well.
Take a look at your kerning especially at the C's beside the T's.

I'm glad you said it, I was going to, but I got confused and thought maybe I was wrong.

it's over done but it brings a very modern vibe

i know i can do better but i look at what you can produce and shit and im just like wow fuck i am so bad
like ive made strides but i still cant create some basic shit without taking shortcut methods (like custom symbols and shit) it's hard to type what you want to do in youtube hoping for a tutorial
Well, no need to be hard on yourself man. We're critiquing your work not you (i know how hard it can be to separate those things sometimes). If you've seen Rusty's other work then you have seen his other posts, it's not personal, just honesty which can be harsh sometimes.
If you are worried that you "suck" you really shouldn't be. You are learning, something we all did. You gotta get past the "i suck" reaction because honestly there is always someone better. I have been in design school for 5 years after personal practice for 8 years and every day I find something to be jealous about. Just make sure it becomes a motivation rather than the opposite.
Take Rusty's comment as an excuse to try something new / crazy / hard. Always try to do things in an original way, even just subtly. Be motivated be inspired, you will be better my friend.
And if you have questions ask them here. If I'm not super busy i generally check the thread a couple times a day. I'm not an expert really, but i know illustrator, indesign, photoshop, and some other programs quite well.

I'm not trying to be hard on myself, just sometimes I've got to really push myself to get out of my comfort zone. Uni was really good with me learning more advanced techniques, my portfolio's took a while to make because yeah I did push myself
I appreciate the feedback and all otherwise I wouldn't post here, I'll try advancing more but sometimes I really just like simple, clean, "straight to the point" designs, gaming community logos around here contain so much gloss and skeuomorphism that it's just vomit worthy
Ya, i agree with you there. Trick is to find a balance between vomit worthy and too simple.
Just remember you're always better than someone, like me, and keep in mind that 90% of the time that someone is a person who also thinks their designs are shit and don't compare to professional work.
Look at some of my trash for example

Still trying to teach myself motion graphics. Made this in the last 20 minutes or so before I left work. I think I'm getting better at timing and less static movement, but it still doesn't look as good as other flat animation stuff to me.
I like it. What did you use to make it?

I'm really considering get started in After Effects because I see cool stuff like your thing on Dribbble all the time. Is there any good resources you would recommend to use AE like you've done? I know the basics as I've used it and similar software before but not for graphics.

I did a lot of the tutorials on Mt Mograph. Video Copilot has some good stuff too.
Looks great mate!

I'm applying to design school and I didn't feel comfortable simply submitting logos in my portfolio so I whipped this up. There's a lot of mumbo jumbo that I should cut back on but I want them to know the process I went through to make the logo. I might redo this when I have the time so that it shows initial drafts or something.
looking back on it i really should remove all the text and make it more visual, like showing the logo at different sizes and colors and such.
Honestly I like the the logo you have there but that presentation is quite bad and I think a design school might criticize a lot of what you've done wrong in the presentation image as some of it is very fundamental.
Before I start on what is wrong with it, so I don't forget, it's definitely a good idea to show the process you used to create the logo so continue with this and definitely show initial drafts. If you have an interview this gives you great material to explain why you didn't like initial drafts and so on. You're completely correct in doing something like this as going in and slapping down the final product and calling it a day isn't what they'll want to see.
There's quite a bit you could work on in the image but main problems are in my eyes:
1. The choice of fonts all around is quite poor. I'm really not a fan of your header font and the main body text font is as standard as you can get.
2. Very poor alignment of everything but it's especially clear down the left hand side of everything, look at this image:
[t]http://i.imgur.com/x4it0pD.png[/t]
You would definitely want these red lines to be straight and for the images to be more controlled in a grid like structure as it's all over the place right now.
3. The paragraph indents don't help with the above problems and aren't really needed. Other things in your text body that you could improve is the the hyphenation happening at the end of your lines were words need to carry on.
But again, just so you're not too disheartened, I very much like the actual logo itself. As for the presentation you got some of the content there so don't be afraid of changing it about a bit.
Yeah those are all areas in which I definitely need to improve on. I'm going to snap a couple photos of my initial drafts and then rework the entire image into a coherent grid structure. As for fonts, I have no idea what I'm doing in that department so I'll have to look into that a bit more, and maybe play around with it a lot.

I'm going to be doing this with another logo too so it might actually be extremely helpful in providing myself with a common format.
