Is there a way to create that random dashed line effect without doing it manually?
By default, Illustrator will allow you to set three consecutive pairs of dash and gap length.
I honestly don't know off hand how to make it random, but what you could do in illustrator is draw a bunch of varying lengths of lines in a line, and then group select them all and drag them into the brush palette / window together.
Then just make sure you click approximate path in the window that opens up and then when you add borders to things and select the custom brush you made it will achieve the effect. This will also allow you to even have certain lines have that squiggle in them because you can manually draw that before hand before you have converted to brush, or after on the object you are applying the brush to.
Another note, to achieve the effect in the picture even more, you can set your strokes to have rounded caps and corners before converting them to brushes.
Creating a custom brush would have been a good idea. I'll save that for the future but I just ended up cutting out random parts with the pathfinder.
btw, I'm doing this because my boss's friend is opening a bakery that I think he has a large stake in since he owns the property. I haven't negotiated anything yet, but I think they're expecting me to do this at the hourly rate they hired me at. I don't know what my options are but it's not part of my job and I don't want to give them anything unless I can actually get them to pay me on my terms.
Whatever works. Its only in the last couple years that I have finally started to take the time to learn the stream lined way of doing things haha.

That is a tricky predicament hmm.. What is your actual job?

design intern lmao. I work on their website mostly, but they've had me work on other projects related to their products. Nothing for other people or unrelated to the company though.
Hmm. I would probably say that as an intern you might have to suck it up. Just only work on it during work hours and then its your boss's problem whether you have time for your other work.
In what way did you use the pathfinder for that? Sounds like you made things way more awkward for yourself than you had to. For future reference, using the scissors tool on a stroke would have been a better choice I believe.
Yeah it wasn't the best way to do it by a longshot since what I did was I drew rectangles over the path and then cut that area out.

The client wanted the giant cake as an element in their logo but I'm trying to talk them out of it. The second one is a draft and needs a few extra adjustments.
That would look best if they dropped everything but the word Mocha and the leaves to be honest.
I'd definitely push getting rid of the cake.

They agreed on getting rid of the cake so we're all good.
sry if I'm turning this into my journal or whatever, i'll keep the posts minimal.
Don't worry about posting a lot, this is what the thread is for and we appreciate the content.
Some of those fonts are really bad to be honest. Let me do you a favor and shortlist those fonts for "Bakery and Cafe" down to the 2nd in the middle row, and 3rd in the last row. The rest are really bad.
I personally really like the first one on the middle row. The only one I think doesn't work is the first one of the first row. It doesn't really match the style of the logo itself.
Bottom right is the best one of out that selection in my opinion, fits the rest of the logo which almost none of the other ones do ( well )

2 different handwritten fonts is a big no. you want one regular typeface to compliment the handwritten one

yeah we settled on the first one. that was the only rule i've ever learned about typography.
I'm happy about the way it turned out, I got paid the way I wanted to and it doesn't look too bad for my first official job.

oh yeah for the entire time we've been emailing they gave me the wrong name so that's why it changed
not to be rude but i think that first 'bakery and cafe' font is particularly bad though. top top one was better
ffs everyone i've asked told me it looks out of place and doesn't fit. It's not too late the change but I'm not going to be able to convince anyone otherwise.

i don't think they understand who our demographic is
none of them fit WELL but that one fitted the least poorly

Just started learning Ai, did some stuff for the Arma III thread in GGD.
The font rusty is talking about looks more news cafe to me, but if there are legitimately people with typewriters in there, then maybe its ok. I don't mind the middle middle one in your original post. However, you are gonna get 100 opinions about fonts, so go with what the client wants and what you can feel good about.

Nice. Good starts. Keep posting your progress and if you have any questions.

I actually got a question: in Ai is there a way to create a transparent stroke? For example the red one I had to use a white stroke so I can later key out the stoke in Photoshop. Unfortunately, this still leaves white traces around the design and makes it look bad. Any ideas?
Try using the stroke as a mask
thoughts on this album cover i made for a friend's electronic project? it's designed to be an abstract model of a molecule based on the front of a textbook i saw
Try using the stroke as a mask
Masks are definitely worth looking into but in his scenario using a stroke as a mask would achieve the opposite to what he wants. (The image would be showing only where the stroke is and not outside of it.)
What he should do is create all the strokes he wants to be transparent and then expand them (object > expand > just tick stroke) then use the pathfinder to subtract the expanded object on the other object.
Oh I misread his question, I thought he asked how to get rid of areas of an outlined object without having outlines show up there. There's a convoluted way to do that with masks but I did mix up how masks work in my original post.

looks neat fam. i would mess with the kerning for 'legend sessions' but further than that idunno. it might over complicate things but try messing with filter effects and glows or try to make it look like it has depth somehow. looks fine if you don't too.

Something I'm working on for my uni's rocket team. I have no history with graphic design and no idea what I'm doing.
It's supposed to be a combo of this and this with a rocket gimmick.
Anyone have any tips/suggestions?
