thoughts on this album cover i made for a friend's electronic project? it's designed to be an abstract model of a molecule based on the front of a textbook i saw
not feeling the font to be honest, although it's a good direction (courier kinda vibe). i'd explore more font options [editline]8th April 2016[/editline]
Something I'm working on for my uni's rocket team. Anyone have any tips/suggestions?
pretty nice and clean looking! however I do think that the big white circle leaves some empty space (lower right and upper left) that kind of bloats the design. the middle Maine part is perfectly fine, I'd play around with the circle before anything else! also looking for some critique/suggestions for a poster on an upcoming event we're having at school. theme is Youth in Design, and we've presented it to the project heads already but they think it doesn't seem like a 'big' event. any ideas and suggestions? apologies for the crappy quality btw, don't have the original files D: (first draft) (second draft)
I like the first one better. More informative and a lot more going on. I looked at the second one first and it took me a while to figure out what it read.
Second one is more punchy, but reads less as an event and is all over the map in terms of concept. The way the words are broken up doesn't make much sense either and as Blind Weasel said simply serves to make it harder to read. I would suggest a combo of the two. Use the bright punchy yellow, red, and blue from the second poster IN the first poster. I like your first poster. However, if the client doesn't, I would suggest trying some versions of the poster where the (well illustrated) central element is bigger and takes up more of the page, even being cut off perhaps.
does anyone have any idea how to make this logo work? i don't know why people are dead set on this idea, i mean it's kind of clever because their name is "the upper room" and it's like an arrow pointing upward and it's also a house also it has a cross in it wow. but as a logo that we're going to have to scale up and make signs out of it's not going to look as presentable as they hope it would be. this is a logo that's going to be thrown on everything and they're planning on printing a ton of materials like hugeass signs. as it stands, i simply vectorized a drawing that this girl drew but now I'm working on making it look usable. maybe i'll ask other people to redraw it in their own way and i'll find some cooler looking ones which capture the same look and feel that they want. in other news i got accepted into the art school i applied to thanks to the help of you guys and your complaints about my margins and fonts. idk if attending art school for gd and such is a good idea/good use of money but i seriously can not fathom spending the next three years continuing down the path i've been going. if this all comes crashing down, i have around two years worth of credits to fall back on if i want to go back into computer engineering or software design. [editline]12th April 2016[/editline] just to be clear this is the school of art at my state university so it's not going to be one of those expensive private colleges with nontransferrable credits.
Awesome! Congratulations. I hope it's good for you. I was thinking of graphic design and instead I'm now taking my masters of architecture. I don't know what graphic design education is like, but i have learned a ton about it in architecture school. Speaking of which, I'm hoping to post my final presentation images later this week if i remember. Gotta present on Wednesday first :S.
i have around two years worth of credits to fall back on if i want to go back into computer engineering or software design.
I doubt that would happen. You're already miles ahead of most designers because you're asking for feedback and applying it, and from what I can tell from your posts you're thinking about the right things when you're designing stuff. (Such as thinking about how it will look big and small)
thx fam but i have to be in it for the money too and it's a bit disheartening to see these people struggling to find work on the internet. The people I've been working with have been able to find consistent work and they're living well with families and houses and shit so maybe it's not going to be such a huge problem.

It's tough but it's just something you need to keep working at.
Anyone know how I can get the font set for iOS? I need it to use in Photoshop.
Been spending a lot of my free time just screwing around in photoshop lately. I didn't study any graphic design at school or work. But one of my clubs in uni asked me to make posters and shit and it slowly tuned into a hobby all sorts. I still don't know how to use illustrator so all my things are in bitmap but I'll get there someday. My first ever job, a poster for an event, riddled with royalty free fonts and vectors. Second work, pretty much similar to the first. [t]http://i.imgur.com/NO3gwT4.jpg[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/kziWur7.jpg[/t] I was given the opportunity to design a label too but I didn't really have any freedom, they pretty much told me what they wanted it to be like. You should definitely learn illustrator, especially for the type of work you're doing. If you already have a good grasp of photoshop it shouldn't be too difficult to pick up and it should make things 100x easier. I'm enjoying this type of work and hopefully I won't have to make many sacrifices to continue with it, some people I know are doing very well for themselves. here's some more hot garbage delivered straight to your screen: [t]http://i.imgur.com/lziqEa9.png[/t] On another note, I was talking to a guy who's developing his own app/site and he told me about a company logo he had commissioned, which ran at about $160/hr from a studio in san francisco. It ended up being just his company's name in a bold font and he received it three weeks later. granted his incubator or whatever paid for it but it seems almost comical
what is with all that connect grow change? and the ie logo? and the scribble logo? what is happening there?
I thought a bit of freedom would be nice but it doesn't seem like they're being very receptive to anything I've tried so far. The scribble logo is the logo they want me to use, and 'connect grow change' is their motto. The twitter isn't very active at the moment so I'm trying different things. Ideally it would've looked something like this: [t]http://i.imgur.com/I9evWqY.png[/t]
This is related more to photo editing than it is to creating and designing new graphics, but for those who are interested, I heard some high end image editing filters (Google Nik Collection) from Google are now being offered for free: https://www.google.com/nikcollection/ If you own Photoshop, you can use these filters within the program as well.

The logo itself is very difficult to read with the splatters everywhere, more contrast between the two?
I'm trying to practice a new style which is that very simplistic look, with simple lines and rounded edges. I think it looks really cute, let me know what you think! Also, my behance is Jasmin Mae. But if any of you have a Dribbble as well, my user is JasminMae!
Looks good. Definitely fits the style you are going for. The one thing about that style (and composing shapes out of a collage of other elements) in my opinion is that it doesn't scale well. I wouldn't want to make it any smaller than what you have shown because then lots of the detail would be lost or would read poorly, so imo it can't really be a logo. You never said it was a logo though, so I'm probably just spouting pointless bs lol. Looks like a good intro pic or splash pic for a youtube channel or something. -- Nice portfolio website. Clean and simple. (I looked at your resume too for fun, just one comment - take it or leave it - I personally hate when designers put those bar graphs "skills" on their resume. It is so ambiguous. If I was a client or employer, id much rather see how many years experience you have with any of those programs and maybe a word like adept. It isn't as graphic, but its more legitimately legible in my opinion. Also, having the bars almost full is probably not totally true and could give false expectations. Like I've been doing design in various capacities for 12 years now and I would still be probably only half full on most "bars.")
I'm also going to assume it's a logo design. But yeah I agree with Smeetin here and it was my first thought when I seen your graphic. (How well will that scale?) The style is actually very nice and you could easily use the illustrations inside it as a touchpoint for a lot of stuff like patterns for a background, which I see as a big strength in it. I'd say play with it and maybe work out a different version of the logo that is used for smaller sizes (in the same style though, keep it similar, maybe remove some elements?) But keep the version you have now as a larger size. If you do this though it's important that you change it as little as possible between versions. Also something I don't really like about the font is the end of the strokes. Feels like it needs rounded caps or something.
Thank you both for your input! (And I appreciate that you took the effort to look at my other works!) But I agree, the scaling for this might be a bit hard considering it's super complex. I was thinking of creating a separate simplified logo in case shrinking it down is needed (is it common to do that?) And I've actually been reading an article recently on how stat bars are kind of becoming a faux pas. I've been wanting to change it, but any suggestions on what I would put in place of it, while still measuring my skills in a sense?
I think Pieclock is on the right track on how to scale the logo. Since it is made of several elements, I think it would be totally acceptable to simply compose smaller scale logos out of less elements. Alternatively, you could have it be something different altogether, as part of an overall branding strategy. They would then use the logo / smaller version for most things and use the complex one for larger banners and ads. -- In terms of the resumé, I have only used mine for applying to architecture firms and they are less worried about that then a typical graphic design firm would be. That being said, I simply state in words how long I have been using the program and how good I personally thing I am compared to industry expectations. For instance: (an excerpt from my CV): + 10 years experience in principles and practice of Graphic Design & Layout + Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite, Autocad, Vectorworks + Competent in HTML and CSS + Adept in photographic representation and photo editing / digital manipulation of images / rendering + Experienced at working with a client and to a specific client design brief -- I don't have bars, just words, but I think its much more "real" and allows me to highlight specific areas within design that I'm stronger such as photo manip. etc. My main argument would be: They assume already that you know how to use these programs, and it really doesn't give them much information, just let them know that you CAN use the programs and then SHOW THEM GOOD WORK to prove how skilled you are with the programs. In other words, the portfolio is equally or more important than CV in a lot of cases. Keep in mind this is all just my opinion, I'm sure there are lots of graphic designers that have better ways of doing things.

I like it. Those would look nice and sharp on a little glossy paper package.
