Alright guys, looking at getting a graphics pad just to start drawing nothing fancy, looking at these two - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wacom-CTL-490DW-S-Intuos-Graphics-Tablet/dp/B013ATUR46 and https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01ER6EUYE/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1479326134&sr=8-3&pi=SL75&keywords=graphics+pad - what do you guys think?
I can't speak for anyone else that browses this thread, but I think you might be better served by the creative work megathread, a lot of digital painters there that know the ins and outs of drawing tablets. I believe there may actually be a drawing tablet thread somewhere, maybe hardware and software? Good luck.
making an android app, want to make a bunch of items in a list be able to be selected and de-selected, but i'm having trouble trying to lay it out (and especially highlight deselected vs. selected). i plan on adding some animations later but really I don't know how the fuck i plan on getting this to look good/easy to digest (those coloured boxes are going to be banners/logos) this is what I have [vid]https://my.mixtape.moe/gofcjz.mp4[/vid] please no harsh words, i'm a fragile soul oh and ignore the fact that it reverts when you scroll out of it's view, that's getting fixed :v:
I don't see anything particularly wrong with it if that is the information you need to display. Perhaps make the URL itself the "visit their website" button so each item doesn't take up so much space. This means you can have more on the page and therefore you can see more of what you have or haven't selected. Some micro-interactions could probably spice it up too with animations, so don't hold back on getting those in as it may be what you're looking for. I may actually do something up later on codepen with that layout as I want some practice with working on micro-interactions on the web. Will post if I do. Here's what I mean layout-wise:

[t]https://i.imgur.com/KX6d0hY.png[/t] [t]https://i.imgur.com/3B6VZLi.png[/t] [editline]20th November 2016[/editline] i made a mockup in my app [vid]https://my.mixtape.moe/mojoyl.mp4[/vid] [editline]20th November 2016[/editline] i can't design anything better i'm terrible at this
Looks much neater in my opinion and I can see how a description would work in between the preview and buttons. Colour-wise that's really up to you, whether you stick with material guidelines or not. There're loads of great colour tools out there to help you come up with something. Reading a bit of quick colour theory might help too - it really doesn't take long to learn the basics.
i designed a more uh, 'slim' design so i can have more entries at once and not making it fatiguing to scroll through
Looks good. I don't quite get what the app is about, but seems nice and functional. On a side note. I needed to make a video for school and I saw that Adobe was having a black friday + student sale on CC, so where as I was just going to get Premiere for the month to try out, I splurged and bought it all for a year. As much as I hate the subscription model, I have to say, the little bits of refinement and changes to Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign are super nice. I'm also really excited to try out AfterEffects and the like.
I don't know how the subscription thing is taken in other parts of the world but I'm Australian and I find the subscription model to be WAAAAAY more cheaper and easy to access than what they had before here. You also have the bonus of having the most up to date version of software which is a nice bonus. I can totally understand being annoyed at not permanently owning the software though. Just my two cents. After Effects is pretty different from Premiere but it's fun. Haven't done much graphic design stuff lately. I did make this poster for the Uni gaming club's Lan party: I can't post the full size thing (A3) but I gave it a bit of texture as well: I think it uses the same font I used on the Microtouch thing I posted quite a few months back :v:.
Designing a few more elements: A minimized element Another thing: And here's the final design for the main thingo I was showing before [editline]23rd November 2016[/editline]

i envy you creative and beautiful wizards so much, that's beautiful
And here's the final design for the main thingo I was showing before
Perhaps someone else can give input into this as I'm honestly just throwing my opinion out, but I think you've maybe took minimizing screen real estate too far now that you have elements overlapping (description over picture). To me it starts to look cluttered with that much stuff squashed into a small space. Love how you've brought the toggle up beside the picture and used icons though. That works really well. In regards to the rest of your screenshots, it all looks really tied together - awesome stuff.

A proper text title to accomodate the banner, I wouldn't know where else to put a title while also making it seem like a title. also you deserve most of the credit for making that base design which i basically just took and made dark one more thing, I'm finding it difficult to put a button in the above ui element which will summon a prompt which will explain what those two dollar amounts are for (I have the "WHAT'S THIS" button right now there to serve that purpose), but I don't know how to/where to place it without breaking the theme (and I want to keep the 'remove' button seperate from being next to any other element to horizontally to disassociate it with them) oh, and they're not icons in the toggle button, just unicode text :v: i don't know where to find good icons for stuff like that anywhere
I'd help too if I understood the big picture, not getting much to work with here.
A general rule of thumb: If you have to explain your UI it's time to change the UI. I agree with Talvy though, I can't really do much more to help unless the bigger picture is explained. I have no idea what those dollar amounts are so I can't advise you on what to do.

I know I'm being secretive, I don't really want to talk about what I'm actually doing, and I'm sorry about that. I'll be happy to talk about it when it's ready to launch :v:. And if you guys can't help me, it's all on me, don't worry about it. it's not 'box1 does this, box2 does this', it's more 'box1 and box2 do what they do because of this'. i don't know, I guess I can't explain it without spilling the beans and I'm probably being a bit petty but I really don't want to. I completely understand though. (and sorry for going on a tangent) I updated the UI to reflect this clarification :v:
Wouldn't the title make a lot of sense to place at the top, above the image? The title could then serve as the top bounding wall and the more info could serve as the bottom bounding wall. A journey from title, image, description, to link. It feels to me like it would flow well mentally.
but then I think that'd look weird since the image is meant to be the title in image form, but the text being above it i think'd look weird, having a text title then an image of that title below it. unless i'm missing something
Mm. You are probably right in that case. I guess I don't really know what you are up to :P. I think overall its coming together fairly nicely though. It might not hurt to break away from the flat design aesthetic subtly though, like maybe adding a texture somewhere, or a shadow somewhere, a little bit of depth would really make it pop. Just a thought. Getting the layout down first is important, so your doing all the right things I think. It's also hard to judge a UI without interacting with it.
Ooh, I completely forgot about drop shadows. When I'm done with the whole thing I'll update you guys. PieClock really deserves the credit though for the base design
I just finished up a semester long project and we're required to put together a book about the process of designing everything. Have a couple pages about the logo, my favorite bit of the whole project. There's probably a lot of typos, I have yet to spell check anything. I'm not sure where this would belong: [t]http://howtodestroyangels.com/img/EP_digitalcover.jpg[/t] So I really liked this EP's artwork and the designer Mark Weaver's work in general. I had a long weekend so I thought it'd be fun to just study and try to emulate the style as best as I could. I take zero credit for this stuff since it's really not mine to begin with but It was really fun messing around. [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/29209413/ShareX/33.png[/t] [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/29209413/ShareX/34.png[/t] [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/29209413/ShareX/35.png[/t] Not sure If I did a good job, feels very blatant and I don't think I like the second one in general. But hey, it was fun learning this kind of stuff, Not sure if I'd ever get to apply it, or feel good about doing it in a professional capacity. If y'all have any comments on this, go ahead. Or y'know probably bite my head off for doing this.
they're nice, but obviously they're a direct rip of someone elses style by your own admission. i'd focus on learning from him (like you can from anything you like) but not directly using his style.
If your purpose is to learn there's absolutely nothing wrong with completely recreating someone else's work in my eyes. Just don't take credit for it. It's a great way to get into the mind of another designer. As for the work there itself I think a heavier use of texture would help tie the photographic and vector elements together a bit better, just like in the first image you've posted. Edit: The book "Steal like an Artist" is a great quick read that covers this topic.

I would agree with everyone above me. Other people's styles mixed together become your style. (However, only if you start toying with it.) I think style precedents are perhaps most useful when you try twisting them and altering them to see what happens. How much could you change the style while still retaining the essence of it that attracted you in the first place?

I love seeing designers who work in UI and web stuff, but also do more traditional graphic design since that's what I want to do with my life. Your interpretation of his stuff is real nice, but yeh I agree with what everyone else has said - maybe take some of those ideas and play with the formula a little more to get something more unique. There's nothing wrong at all with trying to emulate other people's work, its how we learn. [editline]23rd December 2016[/editline] I haven't posted in here before so i'm gonna do a dump of a few bits. Then when you click on it, it scrolls you slowly all the way down to the bottom of that cable where there's a load more information. Shame I haven't gotten it hosted and will probably never bother, its a lot more interesting looking with all the animations - when you hover over a cable, it moves up as though its being plugged in, makes messing around on the site actually pretty fun. Whats the easiest way of uploading a video of it in action so I can just embed it as an html5 video on facepunch? I don't really want to upload it to vimeo or youtube publically. Nice stuff. The Cablr website is great! Well executed and organized. Not sure where to host it if not youtube or whatever. I have a bunch of private videos on youtube, its no big deal. I like the militant transmission overall aesthetic too, but it seems like it would probably be a little on the illegible side at the small scale of podcast thumbnails, etc. Do you have a monograph version, with just M & T or something? That could be nice. Floating Cannon is a bit filter-rapey + overkill though. In the second image, the second green cannon which is larger and transparent really bugs me haha. The floating cannon is a bold / strong shape and colour, seems like the background and effects should be played down a little to let the cannon become iconic. Also, in the first image, the cannons might feel a bit more floaty if they weren't so "in formation." In space couldn't they be at any orientation? And would they be so lined up? Anyways, just some thoughts. The Hitler poster is nice too, minimal but effective. I'd love to give more constructive feedback, but I think they are all bygone assignments / projects either way, and it would be pretty minimal feedback as most of it is quite nice. Thanks for posting, I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Yeh the thing with the smaller text on the MT one was the guy was very specific about what he wanted, and he was really into something like this sort of thing, which works for a vinyl cover but yeah is a little harder to pull off with a small thumbnail. I was trying to think of the bit of text more as a compositional motif than actual information that needed to be read, but I guess that's not easy to pull off. [t]https://img.discogs.com/GhZX3jrotkoe3slUGAiPWnMvoWI=/fit-in/500x500/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-8318371-1459257028-4260.jpeg.jpg[/t] And the logo, yeh, there's a plain monograph, that's just a version of the logo composed for their facebook cover photo, but I think it works best like that - it's supposed to feel really DIY, rough and ready. Here's the one of just MT. I'm no typographer at all, so I'm relatively happy with how the type came out. Hi! I don't have anything to show, but I have a question. I think I'm semi-decent at making good looking UI elements, the problem I have with them is that I don't know how to scale them. How big or small to make them depending on what they are, whether the size fits their purpose. Is there a general guide/common practise when it comes to scaling elements? Like I'd make a title, and some text, and some buttons that go underneath that text and I'd make it look great but I can't for the life of me get it have a good looking size.

I would suggest sizing things based on 3 criteria: interface size (phone screen vs computer screen), importance of element, and how they will be used (a button on a phone needs to be sized relative to thumb/finger size to some extent). Additionally, this is the kind of thing that I would look up tons of precedent / examples for and use them as inspiration. Look at your favourite apps, websites, interfaces and see what they did. Critically analyze why they work, etc. I found a couple links that could be helpful, I'd love to help more, but I don't have any training in this stuff myself: https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2012/02/finger-friendly-design-ideal-mobile-touchscreen-target-sizes/ https://www.interaction-design.org/literature/article/fitts-s-law-the-importance-of-size-and-distance-in-ui-design
