The pixel editing definitely sounds super nice. Maybe I'll try a switch over after my year of CC is up, because I detest a subscription model for design software even if it makes a lot of sense. I'll do the trial this weekend, see what's up. I don't personally have anything against adobe's tools though, can't really complain about them too much, but I'm sure there are a bunch of things that I would love if they all of the sudden got changed.
I don't have anything against adobes tools either, but I feel some of the tools are falling behind in some departments which feel weird considering the number of tools available to you. I feel adobe pathed the way to vector graphics but other applications have refined some of the more common processes so certain things are easier to pull off. A good example was something I was playing with yesterday. Here is how you do isometric grids in illustrator: https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/quick-tip-how-to-create-an-isometric-grid-in-less-than-2-minutes--vector-3831 and here is how to do it in Affinity (with added flexibility like being able to switch planes): Just things like that is what is making me move away from Adobe (for Illustrator anyway). They do have some cool shit in the pipes like Adobe XD. Edit: And then there's the pricing..
a friend asked me to make this but I am really not that good at logo making so I don't think this looks good. I tried to assemble polygons that make an "S" looking shape but really no idea if it worked.
Where did you get the font from? Does it not have different weights? I try to avoid using bold as much as possible because it can fuck some stuff up. Weights, on the other hand, are part of the font and have been designed to accommodate the extra space the font uses. I see what you mean there about the spacing of the lines. Personally, I'd have made the text priority because that is where the eye is almost certainly going to be looking. Would scaling that text down a slight bit not solve the issue there? (And also changing the line width to accommodate as I see you've spent some time making sure the line thickness is half of the font size - nice work there!) Edit: I'd try giving Open Sans Condensed a go. It's very similar to what you have already there and has a bold weight available: https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Open+Sans+Condensed
Could be this one
a friend asked me to make this but I am really not that good at logo making so I don't think this looks good. I tried to assemble polygons that make an "S" looking shape but really no idea if it worked.
It isn't bad. It could be improved substantially though. First, the lines of the actual logo should be thicker, it is being over powered by the font right now. You could also play with making the lines that define the S thicker while leaving the rest thin. It might help the S to stand out better. If you Google image search "letters made out of shapes" you can find some other examples that might inspire you and might lead to something abit more legible. It could be a good exercise to start from an actual S and then slowly reduce it to basic shapes which you then layer and interweave to create a kind of celtic pattern or something. Swords, cutting, and swinging, etc. Could also offer some interesting ways of composing the letter.
Could be this one
It's actually on DaFont called Basic Title Font I believe. EDIT: Oh I just looked at the URL and didn't recognize it as the font I used for the song titles. That is 100% the font for the 'band' name. I would consider commissioning it as a one-off logo if I was much more serious about my music vs my other hobbies.
Could be this one
Thanks. I think I was talking about the other font he had used though as I was addressing how thin the weight was.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/kNbmOEg.png[/t] someone's starting a canoe tour business in canada
[t]http://i.imgur.com/kNbmOEg.png[/t] someone's starting a canoe tour business in canada
At first glance I thought it looked like the end of a blade.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/kNbmOEg.png[/t] someone's starting a canoe tour business in canada
Letter spacing seems too wide in my opinion, almost makes it look like Asian monospace text; also makes it not the easiest to read on thst background. Looks good otherwise, have you tried incorporating some red into it a la the Canadian flag?
I was thinking Canadian geese to really sell the idea that it's Canada. I don't know how to make it Canadian without over complicating things though. The canoe itself is a bit ugly. I can condense the letters and do some other things, it works well in monochrome so it shouldn't be a challenge.
Ya, i like it overall, and it's probably a nitpick, but canoes don't really look like that. The length and angle at the end remind me of a dragon boat. The paddle being a bit larger would help scale the boat down to the size of a canoe. Not sure how to make it interesting in profile with its typical shape though. I wonder if you did a top view and had the wake of the boat form the points of the maple leaf? The boat being the stem?
I think that might end up falling into 'lmao weed dude' territory lol I guess my canoe knowledge isn't as accurate as I once thought. The dude's dealing with a big 8-seater canoe so the profile's going to be a bit different, very much unlike what I have rn. I have an interview for a summer internship at a coffee and tea place so if I get it I can tell people I work at a coffee shop.
To be fair, I was slightly wrong. There are canoes with rising bow and stern, I hadn't really seen them before. I think yours just somehow seems too pointy lol. I think a profile like this says "canoe" better personally: It is pretty good though as is, I just try to give ideas no matter what if I can lol
that's a lot better than the canoe i have rn so i might just copy that. i don't have much experience with canoes t b h client liked the west bund logo i posted earlier so all's good. best client by far, cause i sent him some of my past work to get an idea of what he wanted, and his favorite was a solid block with just some words in it. that probably speaks badly of my skills if that was his favorite of the bunch but all's good as long as he likes my work. i just interviewed for a summer internship and they want me to do some work to see what i'm capable/how i'd fit with their goals. is that common? they're not using my work and they're not asking for too much.

Weeds out people who are half-arsed applying for it and also shows an example of how you'll work.
that's good to hear. i have two weeks to get everything together, including a digital portfolio which has been a WIP for awhile. they're pretty big on their branding compared to a lot of the other coffee shops in this area Here's what their stuff looks like: [t]http://i.imgur.com/zd0x7qd.jpg[/t] and here's what i have so far: [t]http://i.imgur.com/RPGmfmZ.png[/t] I have no idea how to resolve that bit at the bottom where the branch meets the 'S'
Looks nice and I don't see a problem with how the branch is meeting the S. Something I would consider doing though is cutting the little stems into the petals because of the way that Ice Dragons thing is printed in a single colour. (or is that just photoshopped on?)
I agree with the little stems comment, but I personally think the connection between the blossoms and the words could probably be resolved a lot better. Does it need to attach to the S? My first instinct was something like this: Random logo I found on google images: It is maybe not the most creative placement, but its simple and legible.
The ice dragon cup is printed with two colors so I can get away with it. I actually was planning on cutting out the stems, but it's a pain in the ass so I'm doing it at the end once everything's done. The best course of action might be to replace spring with a shorter word that also plays better. It turns out maybe at least 60+ people applied based on what I've found in the past so I'm actually a bit worried. I think the fact that they took my resume and saw my work and then went as far as to interview me is nice. What do you guys think of art school because I don't think going here is the right path for me as long as I work my ass off when it comes to improving and I find ways to challenge myself.
I keep forgetting to post my newspaper work here but I'm pretty proud of the latest front page I worked on and want to get feedback on what I could do better. I only designed the front/back page and news pages. The rest is the main layout editor, I'm technically his assistant, but critique of the whole thing would be nice so I can relay it back. https://issuu.com/rampageonline/docs/issue_4_total_ef0347262df9ba There's some glaring design issues in the sports page with the weird placement of the headline... my layout editor is very stubborn
i think the large image on the front page can be cropped so it's a bit wider, same for the last page. It's a bit jarring when the margins on the left and right are so huge. maybe the caption on the last page can go below the photo instead of on the right, it seems like a waste of space that could be used to make the photo bigger and not make the page feel as constrained. i've never really learned layout design so maybe someone else can chime in. i was on the yearbook team during hs though and i lost so much passion for it once the rest of the team decided to make our yearbook ipad themed or something lol. it was 2015 and idk why, they wanted every page to be part of a "playlist" and every page had to be an app too i think??? my pages did the job but i had so much trouble with margins and whatnot and making good use of my space. i think you balanced the images and the actual text content pretty well [editline]9th March 2017[/editline] what's w/ the black background btw

Even though it was my idea, I really didn't want it this time around since we had already done it with our last issue and it might be overused. I think the caption on the side didn't really work that well on the back page, I agree. I still do that on some of the photos on the inside pages tho, it helps, I think, to have the headline right underneath the photo without having to worry about the headline colliding with the caption.
http://reppoy.com/portfolio/ here's my shitty WIP portfolio site. it doesn't work on mobile yet and it still needs a lot of work when it comes to layout and colors and everything hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha this is never going to complete. On the list of things to-do is adding buttons that autoscroll to the next portion of the site, information like my email, and more of my work beyond logos I've been paid to do. I'm going to finish it over the summer when I have time, and turn it into a site that's easy to maintain and update. I also need to select a different font because that font was for something else.

that's a good thing i think, it wasn't a web friendly font or even a good font so i'll be sure to swap it out.
You sound like me. Ive been saying id finish my portfolio website in the summer for like 3 years ha. This summer I will for sure. (I actually will i think, I'm graduating from my Masters and I arranged with my job that i can start two months later than usual, so im going to take 2 months of completely free time. So much time for my own projects, i can't wait.)
I always build out my portfolio then I learn more stuff over the next month which makes me want to rebuild my portfolio entirely. It's a curse.
Make a timeline for your progress.
I always feel like my portfolio could showcase my work better if it was recreated, though. :v:
I hear ya. Everytime i get time to work on it, i end up starting with a new design and end up just getting it back to the same point before I get busy again.
