That is an interesting situation. I wouldn't really know what to do either. I would probably just let it ride for a bit and see what happens, unless you are really hurting financially. - Anyone have any experience working with wordpress / visual composer and have any good advice to give? I'm trying to build my portfolio website on those because I'm so tired of all the effort required to update my old-fashioned coded / ftp website, and I can see all the potential there is in these systems, but damn they are kind of a chore to figure out at first.
i'm not hurting financially but i feel severely undervalued and it's a bit demoralizing. i was forced to build a site in wordpress awhile back and there's a point where it just clicks and everything starts making sense.
ya i feel that. i was in a similar position. just set up a meeting with your boss, demonstrate your actual worth, and bring up salary. it's a hard conversation but it's one you have to have.
that looks pretty slick but have you tried different colors on that bad boy
I made this for Dribbble, so the colours are flashy on purpose. If I were to do it for real, I'd definitely use something more subtle

I find it great for inspiration as long as you're not sucked into the trends. Posting on it has never really got me much of anything though.

I'm sitting here with Illustrator and I'm pretty new to it and I really need your help! I'm trying to fill out the space between the two thick lined rectangles, and when ever I join the shapes I get this weird diagonal line. I have checked every anchor point 10.000 times and it is closed! Why is this happening? [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/4NNJxdh.png[/thumb] [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/a8BkvjS.png[/thumb]
Dont join the shapes. Join is a command for lines so it is trying to connect the lines. Bring the inside rectangle to the front and then subtract it from the larger (using pathfinder (shift+F9 opens the pathfinder window i believe)).

Exams on thursday and this really stressed me out! Thanks for helping!! [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/wOwXz0O.png[/thumb]

What program do you use for that stuff? I have after effects now, but is that the best thing for simple vector motion graphics?
What program do you use for that stuff? I have after effects now, but is that the best thing for simple vector motion graphics?
Yeah I think After Effects is definitely the best right now. It might be the only Adobe product where I haven't found an alternative that works almost as well for cheaper. I do all of the graphics in Illustrator and then import the .ai file as a composition into After Effects. Besides having all of the illustration ready to go, it's nice to have that "mockup" in Illustrator so you know you have a good composition and everything already. For full videos I do a whole storyboard setup with artboards. Some stuff you'll want to remake in After Effects with shape layers though if you need extra control of them.
is there other software that doesn't feel so bulky? when i run after effects on my laptop to do simple motion graphics stuff it still overheats. my record is 207 degrees.
there's a reason people build good rigs for video editing and motion design. it's going to be demanding no matter what
is there other software that doesn't feel so bulky? when i run after effects on my laptop to do simple motion graphics stuff it still overheats. my record is 207 degrees.
Like Rusty said, unfortunately I think most any comparable software is going to be pretty heavy on your system. I haven't used it in almost 8 years, but possibly look at Moho/Anime Studio? It's marketed more as a cartoon thing, but it's a vector animation program with a motion graph so it could work for motion design as well. No 3D capabilities though. I would ASSUME it's much lighter, but I don't know what it's like these days. And I'm also way too dependent on AE's integration of Illustrator files.
Was this done in After effects? if so, do you have any good recommendations for tutorials?
I don't post in here much but I do motion graphics with AE somewhat professionally - I went to college for it, but for starting off/self-teaching, Mt. MoGraph has a really helpful basics series: https://www.youtube.com/user/mtmograph There's also a good discord server for AE and motion graphics in general, you can find an invite link for it on /r/AfterEffects if you're interested. When you get to animating, don't get into the habit of using easy-ease on everything - it's really noticeable and can be problematic if you're trying to figure out how to make stuff flow well, the graph editor is your friend.
Agreed, you should be lazy with your easing by using Ease and Wizz instead :v: (After you learn the graph editor)
I use Motion2, and usually have the easing set to 80/80. it's all situational though. I haaaaate ease and wizz cause it makes expressions, and is therefore annoying to tweak. a really cool plugin that I also have that sometimes saves me from going to the graph editor is "Flow", it basically puts the graph editor in a single panel and allows you to copy custom easing to other keyframes on different properties/timing, SUPER handy. (We should make a MoGraph thread)
No! We need all the life blood we can get in this thread, its really slowed down and i haven't had time in months to do anything graphic design related myself lol.
What service or system do you guys use to organize all the artwork you did where it can be shown to other people easily? Like several years ago I had a photobucket account with all my old work in it but I'm pretty sure that website is phased out at this point. Now all my work is just scattered all over my hard drive. For graphics-related stuff, here's a background for a stream I'm probably never going to work on consistently, made to look like cover art for an album. Sorry, I haven't been practicing this kind of stuff lately. [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/PmbleU8l.jpg[/thumb]
Oh hey! Its Octopod! Long-time. Good to hear from you! The stream background is fairly minimal / abstract, but it is successful I think. I wouldn't have any suggestions that would really matter much. The way the 'm's line up on the edge of the circle is quite nice. I guess I could say that it might be best without the little half-parentheses on the word 'ministream' (to just really simplify it), but its good either way and creates a specific aesthetic that I'm sure you were aiming for. I like that version of the Octopod logo quite a bit, is that updated from the ones you posted a long while back? - In terms of service to present / organize... I really just use my personal website, which I think is worth investing in for even small-scale sites. I think it costs me maybe $80 a year or something, $100 at most with some additional plug-in subscriptions, etc. I'm switching over from my manual-coded version to Wordpress right now, its a bitch, but after its done it will be the perfect CMS for quickly uploading and presenting something I've done.
I like that version of the Octopod logo quite a bit, is that updated from the ones you posted a long while back?
To be honest I just made a slightly tilted version of the one I already had and put an outline on it, but I found that it does look nicer. I tried to make it as thick as the font. Thanks for the advice and kind words.
No! I've ended up working as a front-end dev so all my designing has been put on the back-burner. It's shit seeing this thread being so dead. I need to give a good critique damnit.
Graduated this last June, so I'm on summer break before starting work. Had some time to do a little bit of design here and there for fun. Fellow Facepuncher Menter has a sci-fi concept called "Mars 1911" which is essentially about Wild West style scavengers on Mars who scavenge and fight over satellites and other space junk which falls to the planet. The artwork on some of the mock ups below are from his portfolio, which you should definitely check out (he has a thread here in creationism corner). It struck me as a good concept to do some just-for-fun work and I ran these ideas past him: The general concept was to have the '1's in "1911" became space junk falling to the planet / through the atmosphere. The type is custom, made to blend basic sci-fi and western trends. Did sketches for most of this stuff, but I can't be assed to scan it. Version 1 (Good dynamic movement, but it reads more as Mars 9) : [t]http://i.imgur.com/v7UYn4D.png[/t] Version 2 (Much more legible, but the nice dynamism is essentially gone. The diamonds that represent the falling space junk have a nice kind of a "playing card / western look to them"): [t]http://i.imgur.com/EGHSQur.png[/t] Version 3 (Trying to blend the good things of the previous two versions while maintaining legibility. Adjusted some of the letter forms to get a better balance.): [t]http://i.imgur.com/pA7HuVk.png[/t] Some backgrounds I made too: [t]http://i.imgur.com/sda9QRt.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/udNGjau.jpg[/t]
Was this done in After effects? if so, do you have any good recommendations for tutorials?
I'm very late on this, but Video Copilot has a great series of tutorials ranging from the very basics to very complex graphics.
Mars 1911 stuff
Those are great! I love all of them honestly, despite the flaws you pointed out. Maybe not a fan of the composition of the very last image because you've threw to many effects into it. What does a version with the version 3 "Mars" and planet stroke look like with version 2's 1911? Speaking of having no design work literally yesterday a local PT has asked me to come up with something. Time to get back into the ol vectors.
Here is the 2 versions blended, not bad actually, not quite as stiff as I thought it would look: [t]http://i.imgur.com/pNGzi1O.png[/t] - Also, been looking at a lot of streetwear stuff recently and wanted to try to make some based on "the[group]." logo that I did awhile back, treating it kind of as a brand. I ordered the two I'm showing here and they turned out pretty well (from spreadshirt). The default logo: [t]http://i.imgur.com/9OpM9og.png[/t] Shirt 1: [t]http://i.imgur.com/xsVa3Xx.jpg[/t] Shirt 2: [t]http://i.imgur.com/ElffP1z.jpg[/t]
