kinda l8 but you should make some of the textures more subtle and make the white part something a bit darker.

Less effort doesn't mean disrespectful. You can probably feel already whether it is disrespectful or not haha. Do you think they will think it is lacking in effort?
(Having the shades in different orientations is a little weird. I like the dude wearing them, I'd suggest you have it in that orientation all the time.)
they've given me basically no feedback or direction
I'm trying to make it apparent that there's a star in the negative space but it's completely lost when I turn it

Ya, on second thought you are right.
In terms of no feedback or direction, then could you just essentially say you are done until they DO give you some? If you have an idea you think is decent, then try to put the ball in their court (since they aren't paying you anyways). If they care enough, eventually they will give you their thoughts.

this task seems promising. i don't think they actually care how their logo looks, they just need something. also ignore the colors, those are just to make them happy.

I redesigned the logo to fit better in the context of a newspaper. I might try to apply to the newspaper or see if I can help in any way because I need a lot of practice with layouts and I can see where they need work too.
I'm looking at it right now and it doesn't scale well.

Both those are pretty cool and I like the way you have integrated the themes.
I like the subtle nature of the first and it feels more unique / interesting somehow, but the second is definitely more professional and quite strong as a straight forward business brand. A+ on both imo.
Good stuff.

I guess its because of the newspaper connection, but the font for the "MiC" part of the mic thing is just kind of blegh, but that could be a bias I have against that particular type of serif font. The logo itself is ok, the base of the mic is a little rough perspective / structure wise, but it gets the job done well enough. It scales ok in my opinion.
Either way it is better than what they had previously for sure.
chances are i'll probably use the third logo i posted. the first one uses neutra and the second one uses circular and i don't think any of them work as well as a different font would.
also yeah the base is super fucked, i'm cleaning it up rn.

what kind of jobs should i be searching for out of college? i don't think i'll make it as a freelancer yet because i only stumble upon odd jobs every few months which will help me pay for a few meals and nothing else. i've been doing research and it seems like the best course of action is to work your way into a creative director position or take on a fuckload of big name clients ten years down the line.
the other designers i've worked with have had steady jobs in a single industry or they're fresh out of college and have worked for really small companies. i'm going to try to find an internship at an ad agency this summer and see if i like that type of work.

the first time i worked w/ them they accepted my first version with no revisions whatsoever and i got a check in the mail a few days later.
i got another unprompted email today with an apology stating that they were rushing to catch a plane and gave me more direction. overall a pretty good client actually, i think part of it's just the language barrier making him come across that way.
[editline]19th October 2017[/editline]
this is the LED guy btw, not the star dude because i've given up on him.
the MiC logo is coming along nicely, i think we're going to ditch the logo thing and stick with the type for a lot of the media. i'm working with a cool photographer dude who has a really good eye for design stuff and throwing ideas around has been fun

My only really issue is the co-founder bit looking squished compared to the other fonts, I'd say make it the same font as the top or the grey writing.
Also I'm not really sure what the front means, it looks nice but dosen't really represent anything that I can see. I like the idea but i'd say it needs a lil polishing
Agreed. It looks pretty good, interesting, but there are a few small touches. Use a different font for "co-founder," don't right align the "co-founder, and contact info text," unless you are going to put it on the right side of the page, and I wonder if the pattern on the left might look / work better with a thick white border? Last one is just a thought.
I also can't really tell what the pattern on the left is supposed to say, if it is indeed supposed to say anything, but I like it. You could try some neat tri-colour versions of it that would likely look really cool.
im making a logo for a youtube show i have been hired to direct, its about a guy who recently became a dad and gives advice for new young parents.
planeta wawa means "baby planet" in a colloquial way.

Looks good. A little over grunged maybe? Also, you should really find a way to make Planeta Wawa look like it is wrapping around a sphere, right now it is a pretty jarring perspectival clash. Since it is supposed to be a punchy thing for a video, I would likely bump the colours up a bit and increase the contrast overall a little, especially on the text band where the first couple letters of Planeta are a little hard to read. I would likely center the whole object rather than just the sphere as well, and might angle it a little to add a bit more dynamism.
Another idea... take it or leave it, just trying to think of anything, maybe add some baby related stuff orbiting the planet? Could be cool for motion graphics anyways.
That's exciting that you get to direct something though. Is that what you are looking to get into as a career?
A long while ago I asked for some advice on Adobe illustrator. As a technician in a school, I wanted to train teachers and students on the basics of illustrator. I've made a PowerPoint to act as a reference but there is a slight issue... I am the only member of staff who knows how to use illustrator and so I don't know if what I've wrote or done is entirely right. Bear in mind that I'm an absolute novice and I have to teach absolute novices.
I don't suppose I could tempt anyone to take a look at my abysmal PowerPoint, provide feedback, have a good laugh at how shit it is and find out what point in the PowerPoint I went insane? If you do, drop me a pm with your email address and I'll send it to you tomorrow. Thanks.
Thanks Smeetin and Senscith for getting back to me. pms sent. ta.
they're starting a student AIGA chapter at my university and I'm gonna join and hopefully be involved.

i'd bump up the contrast or something so there's more depth between the panet shaker thing and the background
That's cool. I'm technically part of a couple associations now as I'm doing my architecture internship, but it takes a decent amount of motivation to be involved when you live an hour out of the capitol.
Some pretty cool events getting hosted by design people usually.

I think there's too much going on, and not enough contrast.
First I'd remove the old paper texture, it's also too low res and doesn't look great.
What I'd do is reduce the colours to 2 or 3 max. My preference would be 1 colour, and create divides between the sections with negative space.
here's a really cheap and nasty 5 minute mockup of what i mean

(pretend all the gaps are equally spaced and the font isn't shit)
I've always been a fan of that logo used in the Radiohead music video for spinning plates.
[IMG]https://i.imgur.com/gD6mjsc.png[/IMG]
There's something eerie about it. Can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's that it looks so natural, yet so artificial as well.
I'll leave a link to some of the other stuff the guy who directed that video did. Not a lot of logo's and such, but tons of shit that inspires me to do more.

hi
so i'm printing a poster soon for my girlfriend (it's her christmas present but we're not gonna see each other until like the 30th so I'm spending the next few days to try and make sure it's perfect)
I think I'm gonna print it at like 12x18 and then either get a nice 12x18 frame or an 18x24 with a mat, either would look good. (She doesn't have a ton of wall space so I don't want it to be TOO big)
I'm gonna print it through Staples probably since they're super cheap and theoretically a decent quality. What's the best way to ensure that it's as high quality as possible? I'm not very good at Photoshop, I learned it in secret.
Currently i have the image size set to as close to that as I can get (I think it's 12x15.8 or something) and I have the DPI at like 300 which is what the website recommended. I have time to theoretically change the entire thing to fit perfectly in 12x18, it shouldn't be TOO hard (hopefully). I have a feeling uploading the entire thing is probably smarter than uploading something that's not 12x18 and letting the company fill in the blanks or whatever.
Is there anything else I can do to try and ensure that the print is as high quality as possible? I know they offer different print options like Photo Gloss, Photo Semi-Gloss, Standard Heavyweight, and Super Heavyweight but I have no idea what those things do. I can also get it laminated but since I'm framing it that doesn't seem ideal.
Here's the poster in case the color scheme or layout matters for print quality.
[img_thumb]https://i.imgur.com/lDTdty7.png[/img_thumb]
If you have any tips let me know. Even layout tips, although my time's running a bit short on what I can actually do. (the text is still a placeholder I'm not 100% sold on it)
Print on a heavier paper, I would recommend a matte photo paper (photo semi-gloss would likely be fine). At very least, get it on some kind of card stock if you don't want to do photo paper. For a poster, especially one as a gift, the standard printing papers will not be very nice and colours will not be great.
Whenever I have printed stuff, I always try to do as much preparation on my end as possible. The less work the people at Staples have to do, the better (since in my experience, they don't necessarily know what they are doing).
When you go, I would have the file as a high resolution version of a couple image types just in case, but most places like to print from PDF (again, in my experience).
Don't laminate.
Also, be prepared that the colours may not be the same as what you see on your computer. Every printer varies essentially. There is a chance they will be lighter or darker, the lines and dots may be harder to see than you imagine. If you want to be ready for this, it can't hurt to have a lighter version and a darker version ready to print if necessary.
On top of this, I don't really know if there is anything else you can do if you are printing at a place like Staples. My only other suggestion would be to print a day or two ahead of when you actually need it because they can have all kinds of issues and you may all of the sudden need to find a different place to print entirely.
Oh also, not sure how it is in your city, but where I live UPS is a great alternative for printing. The one I used exclusively in university always printed my stuff right away, whereas Staples always made me wait till the next day. Additionally, you may want to actually check out some local / smaller print shops. They may be a bit more expensive (not by much though on a single poster print), but they will likely be a bit more invested in helping you get the result you want.
Good luck.
Another printing option is Fedex, but they won't print it at anything lower than 18x24 and that's like $40. The quality's usually good though.
Staples lets you upload stuff and order trough the website and they let you download a PDF proof so in theory I can see what it would look like. That's a good point, though, I'll keep that in mind. I'm trying to not spend TOO much since I need to buy a frame, too, but I want it to look as good as possible. Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know how it goes.
[editline]26th December 2017[/editline]
There aren't any small print shops near me, really. Unfortunately.
[editline]26th December 2017[/editline]
The nice part about making it 12x18 though is that i can make the graphic bigger and it should still look good.
scaling things up shouldn't change the quality of them in photoshop (assuming they're vectors), right? It looks like it didn't change them and I drew everything in PS with the pen tool so I'm assuming they're vectors.
