update: got the print, i'm not SUPER happy with it but under the circumstances it's decent. i'm starting to wonder if i should do a small print like a vertical strip or something so it can fit somewhere nicer, even 12x18 is pretty big. Also I'm thinking a smaller print might make it less noticeable if it's a little fuzzy? I have like 24 hours so this is cutting it a bit clsoe but I think I have (in theory) time to make some adjustments.
Fuzzy... Hmmm. Not sure why it would be fuzzy if you submitted high resolution. Unless you converted to a PDF and down sampled at the same time by accident, or if they printed at a lower quality. Depending where you live, humidity and stuff can actually affect printing. Shoot. Hope it works out for you, but I'm sure she'll love it either way. You can always refine it after the fact.
I mean it was $10 so I'm not getting my hopes up, if anything I can wait and get a higher quality one printed later on [editline]30th December 2017[/editline] I'm getting an 11x14 printed, it probably won't look good but it was $3 with a coupon code so we'll see. If it's smaller it might hide the imperfections a bit.
Hey guys, so i'm pretty new to the whole freelance thing and idk what to price my GDs... Whats like the average beginners freelance charge? I have a client who is a youtuber and he wanted me to draw him in this style as the pic(A random animated thingy I made and sent to him as like a gift cus I think his contents good...) then he asked me to do like kinda the same thing with another pic and that he would pay me for it... Now how much should I charge for a full body animated picture thing? (I am sorry for my bad explanation, I am not good with words.) Pic is the first one. [t] https://i.imgur.com/afBv7Bk.png [/t]
making a pretty minimal poster for a singing & dancing group with photography by the beautiful codenamecueball, worried about whitespace and potentially too much saturation tho [t]https://i.imgur.com/Imv56Pf.jpg[/t] also absolutely FUCK tracing an entire choir with the pen tool and all the extra fuckery needed to make a colourable silhouette - and even worse I'm not even getting paid for the hours i've absolutely sunk into it
The proximity of the elements makes me uncomfortable, notably the stars at the top and the "Following last... show." I also think the text at the bottom is a mess, but I also personally despise center-aligned text and have always been taught to avoid it, as it's hard to make it look good. I think there's some weight issues in the text down there too. Keep in mind, when transitioning between elements in context of the hierarchy, two separate elements should always be at least two weight values apart. This means if you want one word to be light, and the other to be bold, make sure you don't make the light one, for example, "light" and the dark one "regular." You should ideally skip a weight level, making the light one "light" and the dark one "medium" or "bold" (depending on what the font gives you access to). That being said, you should also avoid fonts with only two or three weights-- that's usually a good indicator that it's either an amateur font, or not much effort went into it's creation. Other than those gripes I thing it's a perfectly fine poster and definitely above standard. Some additional suggestions: You are right about the whitespace being very important in this particular piece. I believe, if you can, you should remove some elements. I think the blue and orange logo marks in the bottom corners are quite distracting, try relocating them to make them stand out less, or making them monochrome (again, if your client allows). The middle of the piece has tons of beautiful whitespace, especially with those beautiful colors. Then, at the top and bottom, that whitespace seems forcefully removed to squeeze in this harsh, cluttered text. I think the font is wonderful, but the proximity of the individual text elements throws me off. Perhaps they could do with more breathing room? I keep picturing this poster with nothing but the very top line ("following...show"), the people dancing, and the lines "SHOWCHOIR ENCORE" at the bottom. Obviously, the poster can't be just this since you need the location of the event, but I think such a design would have the optimal whitespace/minimalism. But hey, that's one of the challenges of designing that once you figure out, will definitely transcend to your other works. [editline]31st January 2018[/editline] Maybe make "SHOWCHOIR" a lighter weight than "ENCORE"? IDK, something about everything down there being the same weight is really throwing me off. [editline]31st January 2018[/editline] Oh, and I don't think anyone is going to read those reviews at the top. I'd say make some more space by cutting out the text, but keep the stars and the source of the review. Remember this is going to be a poster on a wall. Most people who see it will see it from 20 feet away. As such, the big "ENCORE" and people dancing is excellent, but those tiny little reviews are completely pointless and just take up space that no one will ever be able to see/read without sticking their head up to the wall (have you ever seen anyone get that into a poster?)
I like the poster quite a bit, but it could definitely benefit from a lot more white space. Nothing else to say that Lope didn't. Nice colours and imagery.

Partially was going for the reviews to maybe expand a bit as to what Showchoir actually is, but you're right - doubt anyone is actually going to stop and read them. I'll get cracking on taking your suggestions on board and trying to show an update - many thanks!
Settled on [t]https://i.imgur.com/gWSz8Xk.jpg[/t] still a few things I'd change like the logos in the corners and lowering position of actors but client wanted it to go to print
hey, haven't been on the forums in a while (old member from 2007), but i wanted to get some feedback on my recent illustrator projects. workin on a digital zine (maybe physical but idk). ideally it's also going to be my Electronic Press Kit that i would send to blogs / media for marketing my new music project. some of the files are pretty big so i just put it in a zip https://www.dropbox.com/s/12cb3miki8cczqz/tombomag%20demo%20pages.zip?dl=0 one, i would like some feedback if u can spare the words, and two - i have questions about artboard sizes and resolution stuff with illustrator. i've been using 8.5 x 11 in. size artboards, and when i export them to pngs they don't always come out at those measurements, usually a bit wider or a bit taller. i think this has to do with using 3d objects but i'm not sure. also, i feel like my stuff is in a lower resolution compared to my friend's version of illustrator? i've been making the pngs like 500 dpi but then they're like 55mb compared to like <5mb. is that the only way to make them not look pixely when u zoom in? this may have to do with my graphics card or just my computer's state - i have a late 2013 macbook air pro. thx - neap tide

two color designs give me boners
Made a sub-logo for a business I did a logo for a couple years back. Their main brand "Norwind Interactive" is an app / game business that targets a broad demographic globally through various digital platforms. Conversely, they are also doing IT / computer repair work locally and they wanted a logo that they could use for this smaller market that would relate to their existing brand, but suit the different business goals. Original logo and new logo side by side: [t]https://i.imgur.com/lwEnNVh.jpg[/t] [t]https://i.imgur.com/D2OaHcX.jpg[/t] [t]https://i.imgur.com/eyCcMK3.jpg[/t] [editline]10th February 2018[/editline]
Hey guys, so i'm pretty new to the whole freelance thing and idk what to price my GDs...
At the end of the day, find a balance between a) What you think your work is worth, b) what you think the client will be comfortable paying, c) What you are comfortable charging. I charge a rate of ~$40 an hour usually, but balance out that by quoting them a relatively low amount of hours for simple work. I typically charge between 400 - 700 for a logo depending how intensive they want the process to be. This is quite low in the industry, but for a hobbyist as myself doing work for people that are just running local businesses, it makes sense. I just do this on the side, so it isn't really about money for me. I don't want to charge a ton and then have all that pressure riding on me. The logo above was even cheaper yet, because it wasn't as much work. I did a few options, but ultimately they felt a logo using elements of their original was the direction to go; an option that required less illustration time, etc. [editline]10th February 2018[/editline]
Made a logo for a cosplay group a little while ago Also made this for no reason other than I need to make a few more things for the portfolio
I hate to be that guy, but its spelled "Bunny." But if it is just a personal thing it probably doesn't matter. Both logos are pretty nice. They feel solid and well balanced with clean edges. Even though digital media and stuff has made black and white logos less important, I still would try that Squidbeak Cosplay logo out using only black and white. As a learning exercise even, or for portfolio, to learn how two-colour logos should still be able to translate and how this affects the way that they are illustrated / composed.
Bunny was misspelled on purpose. I always design logos in black and white first before adding color. Thats how I've been doing it for years. Usualy I will give the black and white version to a client as well as the color one, because it does have its uses. Here's an example of my process [t]https://puu.sh/zlMlV/76cc5b2946.png[/t]
Care to share how the squidbeak one works in black and white? I've struggled with translating similar logos in the past.
[t]https://i.imgur.com/D2OaHcX.jpg[/t] [t]https://i.imgur.com/eyCcMK3.jpg[/t]
i reckon the gradient looks weird on this one. there's too many colours and it's not smooth enough, you can basically see the banding. and on the logo itself, the sliver of light blue on the right edge looks real weird. i'd say you should consider going right from the light blue to the purple but then it would be the same as what we've done for white pages lol [t]https://s0.whitepages.com.au/2491f369-4d4e-4ba3-86ae-fb3bcd9b3ed3/white-pages-australia-logo.jpg[/t] [editline]12th February 2018[/editline] and the heirarchy for the logo and word mark feels weird. there's 3 different horizontal lengths, and the thick black wordmark draws my eyes away from the logo to the point where i almost can't look at it

Gradients were something I wanted to present as an option for flashier advertising for them, but the colours are too close together I guess. Though my illustrator exports gradients with banding no matter what I seem to do. The word mark was something I just kind of had to live with unfortunately. It was a strong element of their original logo and it was essentially a no go on doing something different with the type here. They didn't say so, but in sketches and putting together options, the unifying factor of the word mark consistently out weighed the slightly imbalanced characteristic. Other fonts and placements really felt disconnected from the original brand, particularly because that word mark is such a bold element. I think I could probably size the logo mark up a bit and maybe solutions too, that could help a bit. Really in some ways, I think they could get away with just using the word mark for any sub-brands they might need, but they leaned towards a logo. - Tried something out: Different gradient altogether + making the logo mark bigger and having it the same width as the sub-title:
yeah I definitely prefer that version, as well as the colours.
Thanks for the comments. I'll send an updated package with this to them and hopefully they use it instead.
i forgot where i read this but i was told a lot of gradients are rendered in 3D software as opposed to within illustrator/photoshop because it creates softer/more gradual/more dynamic gradients. at the moment i'm trying to learn sketch and some 3D software, and I'm thinking cinema 4d might be more worthwhile for now.

there was probably noise in the render, which dithers gradients better. which can also be achieved in any other program by adding noise to it.
What have you been up to Rusty? You haven't posted something in quite sometime as far as I can remember.
wait, what? where've you heard that, it sounds ridiculous, why on earth would a 3D program do a better job of transition from one colour to another?
supposedly because you can mix in different shades at different locations more easily or something, i'm sure for linear gradients it'd be much easier to handle it through any other software.
What have you been up to Rusty? Totally understand. I'm pretty much in the same position. Only personal work I get anymore are companies that I did something for 6-7 years ago that all of the sudden need something new. Well I appreciate your lurking anyways and hopefully you'll get some time to make some of your own stuff again eventually ha.

I'm a bit too burnt for personal projects because of work. That's why I picked up playing around with music production and things like that. I still feel weird if I only spend my free time playing video games instead of something at least somewhat productive.

Honestly, after 6 years of intense university, I don't even know how to be creative without it being "work," anymore. I found that I have to do creative things that are quite far from my wheelhouse in order to enjoy them, so I fiddle around with music a little and I do some writing + have been running a DND game for 2.5 years. Writing is really fun, but unfortunately a day of work makes it pretty hard to go home and type for the evening.

One of my classes this year allows us to explore a project we create, but the first few weeks require us to work with "obstructions." I had to develop a brand for a garbage company last time, and after this one I can design whatever I want, which I'm thinking will be a lifestyle brand.
