What program are you working in? In Illustrator you expand / convert the line to a block and then subtract the part you want.
Illustrator yeah, and thanks! That means I can no longer edit it as a line/path though right?
Correct. I haven't used the newest version of Illustrator, but in the version I use that is the case. Alternatively, you could draw a white block over top of it (unless you want transparency) and maintain edit capabilities of the line as they are. Sorry, I can't think of anything else. Someone else might know a better way. [editline]1st August 2015[/editline] Some posters I have done recently for events: 3rd year in a row these guys have come to me. Same process as usual: take photos they have of past events and make them into a scene. The whole thing is a collage of elements essentially. Cop, the zombies in his visor, girl in the backround, buildings behind her, far back buildings, umbrella logo, and effects are all different. Was pretty happy with how it turned out. Like always it looked better before I had to put logos and info on it haha. (I realize it is a bit busy and the lines go in all directions rather than pointing from info to info, but I wanted it to look kind of like a movie still.) Was trying to go for something slightly abstract and punchy, something "hip" if you will to try to bring in the 20+ demographic. I really liked how the lines point from the top to bottom drawing the eye from info to info. Trying to turn my favorite hobby into my job instead of working for soneone else.
Thx Vladnag for the support!
Glad to hear someone helped you out. Would be interested to see how it turns out in the end if your willing to post (the embroidered finals that is).

Just something I did for fun a week or two ago. I have one issue with the "Matrix portal" in the middle and that is it won't show that 010101 pattern fading off on the sides/stroke. I believe all I did was apply it to the stroke and change its opacity, or maybe I applied a gradient...have to check. But it is not suppose to look like a little slice like that at any rate. Doesn't matter what format my teacher put it in, doesn't matter if I post the file online, it doesn't display as intended and I don't know why. I can take a screenshot of what it is intended to look like a little later. In fact, my teacher had to take a screen shot to get a correct print of it! EDIT: Here's how I intended it to look like:
I need help with drawing smoke to fit this gun in Illustrator. My friend said this smoke looks like tribal. Any tips?
I downloaded this and opened it in Illustrator but I couldn't edit it and it's bugging the fuck out of me because it must be a reason that is so insanely basic... I wanted to just try and illustrate some smoke as a suggestion, but since I can't edit it, can't help.
Well for starters the image is a .png and not a vector file format. That being said you could download it and use illustrators live trace option.
Well for starters the image is a .png and not a vector file format. That being said you could download it and use illustrators live trace option.
Ahhh I knew it'd be something simple like that. Although I thought regardless of a format you could still edit an image; perhaps not be able to edit paths or layers, etc., but at least be able to use tools like usual.
You can't even open bitmap files in Illustrator, you have to make a new document and then place them. At least you couldn't the last time I tried.
Sounds about right to me. Placing images into illustrator is pretty much just for tracing over too.
working on a little porfolio for myself [t]https://i.gyazo.com/a897b8baf8087b4a08661e11cb860269.gif[/t] click for fullsize whatchu think
I'm gonna have a random logo and header background for my website. These aren't the finished, transparent stuff for my website but I've been having fun with this nonsense:
do you really think that's wise? using other company's copyrighted designs and forsaking any of your own identity?
It's probably not wise at all, but I think the worst that would happen is a request to take it down, right? I asked a friend and I got this as a response:
I really don't know, but I don't think it would. I mean, people sell parody logo shirts that looks nearly identical to the real thing. I think if your header randomly cycles through a lot of logos, and you actually have a real logo somewhere too, you'll be fine. It shows that you're not just outright using their logos as yours. But again, I don't really know.
I mean, with the whole wok dilemma, the legal stuff that YTMND has gotten into in the past, and the DMCA stuff I've seen people deal with, it starts with a cease and desist that generally gets resolved after the stuff is removed. Nothing crazy serious happens - at least not usually. But I could totally be wrong!
I was thinking more for your sake. You're not giving yourself an identity or a brand or anything original and just taking off other peoples as a 'joke', one that ultimately is at your own expense. [editline]16th August 2015[/editline] you're far better off designing your own logo, I feel like taking off other peoples is more of a lazy cop out because you don't have any ideas.
I understand what you're getting at. I think I can reserve what I was doing for article thumbnails or something like that.
To be blunt, it's just straight out lame.
I'm trying to think of what would match the idea of boolarg and look nice at the same time. Boolarg means boolean argument, and when I hear that I think of programming. (i.e. function Example( <bool> )) Boolarg could also be read as true or false argument, which kind of matches the tone of looking at everything critically. Dunno how to combine these ideas into a logo though. I'll think about it.
Try to get away from pointless Web 2.0 style effects and etc. If you want it programming related, just keep it simple and interface looking or use a small programming looking element.
Heh, thanks! I'll keep that in mind. I've done a lot of web design work for other people and they've always had their own logos. I think I've designed like two logos in the past.
Guys, what's the general consensus on Fonts? Every single nice looking font ( apart from ones from League of Moveable Type) I have all have personal licences. If I'm wanting to create a bunch of posters and leaflets that are only visible within University buildings, is it necessarily a major issue if I'm using the personal use fonts on them? I know it's nothing like a huge company using them, and it's in a non-public area, so even though it's a bit morally wrong is it anything that would actually generate issues - even if it is say 20 posters and a couple hundred leaflets?
You could probably look through the fine print in your licenses. I've found that they're pretty upfront about when you are and aren't allowed to use them. If they're funky handmade fonts by Joe Schmoe, however, I've got no clue.

The "no benefit to any party" is a bit ambiguous. They could argue that their font affected the turnout of your auditions (serious) Personally, I don't think you have anything to worry about. It's up to you to decide if you think it's right.
No monetary benefit would generally be the consensus I would think. That can be a rabbit hole that if they wanted to a legal team could go down, but to be honest, they probably won't. When in doubt, I just find a font that allows commercial use. I can usually find something that works just as well or better if it is a standard serif / san-serif and not some whacky custom stuff.

I worked with an NFL team for a short time period, but sports or gaming is a market I'd like to break off into eventually full-time. I mean I love the company I work for now, but it's fairly low visibility work and more of a first job to get my foot in the door.
Thanks. It is a fun type of branding to work in, lots of illustrative qualities. I haven't done too much sports stuff, mainly just work for Silver Eye and some stuff for a basketball team. Sounds like you have a lot more experience with it than I do.

Mostly just layout stuff.
