Architectural understanding, not terribly important. you can probably see a lot of weird and impractical things in my drawings. as long as it looks plausible it need not be functional. however having looked at buildings and street fixtures and things is of great importance because that mental history is where I pull ideas from. I have very little reason to think that I'm naturally gifted haha. I believe I did the reference question above, have a look near the top. I'll elaborate a bit on this subject matter in particular though, I've been in love with the idea of the near-dark-future, urban industrial, retrofitted half-slum megalopolis from very early on (since ffvii came out) - but I didn't feel like I could legitimately work within the concept without going to tokyo myself and breathing the environment from which it came. plus I wasn't good enough at drawing yet. so I went last year, fell in love with that too, and now I feel qualified to take on this stuff. didn't take many pictures but pretty much spent the whole time walking around looking at every grungy corner and sketching things.
the well-defined spaces and forms (you're very kind) would be from my having studied perspective enough to have good practical intuition, rather than building knowledge again.
I do get the Akira comparison often, but don't worry I never tire of hearing it.

I like how the characters aren't shaded. It's like a paper cutout.
hm maybe I need to reconsider that choice, that isn't what I had in mind at all really haha

to me it more comes off as the way an animated character looks in front of a painted background
which is pretty cool
though it is pretty obvious that the character was drawn digitally and the background wasn't. if that's what you were going for then cool
I think it's hella cool and I wouldn't see any need to change the style, unless you really had something specific in mind that you need to get across.
with that last one I was just checking how it would look if I worked digital over something from my sketchbook. the animation frame look is definitely something I want to do but in that case I'll probably paint the bg and do cel characters

(colours in the latter are buggered from the upload compression)
there's always something fascinating about watching a well done painting process. seeing form and shape arise from colors... cool stuff as always mako
try cubeupload, it doesn't compress as much I think
Nice studies, Mako

cool life drawings!
are there any anatomy-related books you would recommend?
thanks. probably none you're unaware of - Loomis Loomis, there's Michael Hampton (I like his book but I don't actually have it), Bridgeman's stuff is very beautiful in terms of draughtsmanship but I've not found him instructive really. I also have Anatomie Artistique, which you could almost use as a medical textbook it's so detailed, but you don't get a lot of dynamic inspiring drawings in there. Really just dry knowledge with very classical style plates. if you want to get properly into muscle groups and so on I'd recommend it. I've been through bits and pieces of Bammes as well, again not much joie de vivre in the style but the knowledge might be helpful if you want to try different construction methods.
going to try streaming for a bit if anyone's hanging around - https://www.twitch.tv/blurringmyday
here's a teaser of what I'm working on which I made to post elsewhere - http://i.imgur.com/LaJM2JL.png
I absolutely love your work, really inspires me to continue learning art.
I'll be following for sure.

That's a cool lighting effect, it also gives a good place for the eye to rest on.

Saw this one of Link in the 2D Digital forum. I really like your style. I'm a big fan of drawing with ink and marker, too, but persective and backgrounds are a nightmare for me. When I first looked at your work, it took me a moment to realize that they were fictional; they look like real places! At least- you know, real places that you referenced then embelished with fantasy.
Your work is very inspiring. You say you studied and built up your library of knowledge to draw these powerful environments. That's encouraging to hear, because that's exactly what I did with everything else I draw. Sometimes I forget that drawing backgrounds doesn't have to be hard, I just need to build my knowledge.
