Visited a great spot by a river. I wanted to take some photos of the fishermen but didn't really know how to approach them. Anyone have advice on asking strangers for a picture? Also here is my friend climbing the base of a radio tower.

there's no two ways about it man, you gotta bite the bullet and just approach them. if it helps, here's a few things my professors have told me in the past that helped me:
act like you know what you're doing even if you really don't. as long as you look confident and act like nothing is out of the ordinary, literally nine times out of ten people will just go with it.
your camera is a get-out-of-jail-free card for social situations. most people will pay no heed to any weird things you do if they see the camera and you look like you're busy.
you gotta be empathetic. strike up a conversation, make small talk, even just ask their name or what they're doing there, just make them feel like you're INTERESTED in them and you're not just there to bug them. remember that you're talking to a human and when you really boil it down, what you're doing is just starting a conversation. hang out with them for a while, as long as they don't mind. just be genuinely interested and ask thoughtful questions and your photos are guaranteed to come out better with that emotional investment being made.
really there is no easy way to get around it, I've always been super socially anxious and awkward and I know how difficult it is. sometimes people will still tell you no, that's just how it is and there's no shame in it, and nobody will think any less of you. even in the worst case scenario, you'll get told off and you'll likely never see that person again. ain't no big deal. just go for it my dude
there's ALSO the option of saying nothing, shooting a photo, and walking away. Garry Winogrand made a whole career out of this.
[t]http://proof.nationalgeographic.com/files/2014/03/140411_NGAExhibit_Winogrand-12.jpg[/t]
Granted, he did this for decades so he was fuckin good at it, but nonetheless, he didn't do anything special, just acted confident, smiled and acknowledged the subject if they happened to notice, and walked away.

Haha, that should work too.
how you approach the subject is part of your photo

His photos are nice, but man, how the hell does he not get any angry folks after him for flashing at pedestrians.
So I know the heavy color editing really shouts "I'm edited!" But honest to God, I've just really wanted to have a kind of abstract day with my photography, and I really ran with it and liked the color palette that came out of it. I know they're not the best shots or anything, but I really just wanted to share them with you guys. You matter to me.

I just tend to get yelled at when I take pictures of people without asking.
I wonder if it's got something to do with being so close, and so instantaneous. You don't give your subject time to react.
heavy color editing
I can totally get behind the last two, but the first one is just too much of a representative photo for the hue shifting to work effectively IMO
As a moderately colorblind person, I honestly can't tell what you did to the colors on any of them. Are they just really red? I don't think I would have noticed if you hadn't mentioned it. My main crit is the last one is pretty washed out value wise.
Here are sloppy snaps of prints I made (they look 100x better in person of course). I could work in the darkroom all day. So fun.

Which is honestly why I was so on the fence about uploading that last one, but I agree with what you said. I felt like there wasn't much definition of the subject tree between the others, but I made a call and just did it. And a lot of people have liked it and a lot of others have said the same thing, so I think it's just one of those things I guess. I was just trying to stretch my creativity. Thank you for the feedback man.

Its been a while.
Anyone offer opinion on which of these is the better picture? The second is just more cropped.

I think the second shot is better...
However, there's a creeping in of what looks like a potentially interesting foreground with those rocks.
If you'd moved back a bit and shot the photo with a bit more of those rocks, I think the image would have been better than both of the ones you've posted.

I actually have a picture exactly like that but I messed up my focusing and only the rocks were focused on and the background was blurred and I was quite frustrated. Will try again another time.
I wish I could retake this one with proper equipment.

I went on a snowshoeing trip for a few days for spring break and unfortunately didn't get to do any of the scenic hikes I was looking to do (out of my control basically), so I'm a bit unsatisfied with the few pictures I got, but I feel like it would be a waste not posting anything from it. Here y'all are.
