Do you basically have to shoot on film to get that look to your photos or is it possible to replicate it with a DSLR?
There's preset software like Alien Skin.
But here's the thing, all these software developers have their own interpretation of how certain types of film look. So imo the only way to get a 'true' film look is to just... SHOOT FILM.
For most of us shooting film it's not just about the film look either, it's the whole experience that comes with it. Having a roll with a set amount of frames and ISO, having to wait for the roll to get developed and then watching the results one by one when scanning the roll. The best of all is that after a while you will be able to create your own film look with your digital work and not use some preset made by someone else.
shooting film is boring

imo
I see it rather pointless scanning rolls in. They just end up looking like photos with digital filters put over it lol. Unless it's printed, film really doesn't look that much different for me unless it's marked clearly as shot as film. Don't worry about shooting film or digital. just shoot whatever, imitate film if you want with filters, but the content of your photos are what matters the most.
Also film is great for archiving, no worries about HDD crashes. You can backup what you want but modern technology tends to fail just when you need it most.
Also also the exposure latitude of new kodak portra 400 is insane.

new title for next thread: film vs digital
Shooting film is all about the camera and nothing abour the film. If I could put a digital back on my Olympus stylus or Minolta autocord I would, but I can't so I will continue to use them, which forces me to use film. And you can never replicate real b&w imo.

I don't think that's totally correct. Film stocks differ greatly in colour density, saturation, latitude, sharpness and the fineness of the grain. The film type is a huge factor in how your images will end up looking. I find its less about the camera and more about the film stock & lens quality and sharpness.
also, content:

I mean, there's film I like more than other film, but I can always edit in post. I was just saying the camera is more my deciding factor over film, if I'm in a hurry I'll slap any old roll of film in the camera I want, just so I can use that specific camera over another camera that has better film in it.
Edit: this is more specific to fixed lens cameras
which film will make it look like VSCO filters tho??
which film will make it look like VSCO filters tho??
a great deal of film presets either replicate film that doesn't exist anymore, or just try to look generally "vintage" and not like real film. I have never seen a film preset or found a workflow that makes my digital stuff look like ANY of my film stuff
MOST of the time your photos will look better without gross over-processing and MOST of the time it's easy to tell real film apart from film presets
[editline].[/editline]
also while I'm sharing my useless opinions: it irritates the hell out of me when people shoot film but process the shit out of it in photoshop. like why the hell shoot film?
