I think by itself the landscape wouldn't be too overboard, but the lighting on the woman does not look convincing or natural in relation to the light in the scene, which judging by the light rays should be coming from in front of her, not behind. Almost looks like bad HDR processing glow.

How can I replicate this in my home environment? The light shafts coming in, I really like to try it but its difficult without trespassing into abandoned buildings. [t]https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/e7/4c/23/e74c234c11614dc3d94cbdf44588616f.jpg[/t]

Like many artists I am often not satisfied with my work and am constantly working to improve toward my desired photographic goal. I also gave up all hobbies and other interests to focus on photography. I now spend every moment of my free time looking at inspiration,watching tutorials, editing (and attempting to discover new techniques), sending emails and planning shoots. The only other things I do are, work, cook, watch one episode of twin peaks a day and then sleep. Another shot;

So I realize my camera kind of struggled with these shots, but I'm still amazed at how many stars our naked eyes are missing out on. Hawaii or some other volcanic rock?
Can anyone offer help in the form of portrait photography advice. I like looking at portraits but my experience is almost solely landscapes and I don't have a work flow or a good idea of how to make a good portrait of somebody. Things aren't helped by the fact I only have a kit lens so can't go down to lower f-numbers at the moment. This was my attempt yesterday: Shot at: f/5.0 35mm 1/250 ISO 100
what are the portraits for? in that example you need a longer focal length and to control your light a bit, maybe introduce a bit of soft flash. on lenses, f/5.6 at 200mm is acceptable tbh even though i usually shoot f/4. you've clearly pulled the highlights right right down and put a vignette on it which doesn't work imo. her expression is also a bit impersonal. how long had you been speaking to her before you took the shot?

I do have an external flash with a makeshift soft box which I completely forgot to use which probably would've helped. I probably picked a bad spot too as the sun was shining right down her side hense the highlight problem. Do you use a reflector as well as a flash?

I took some pictures with the flash on in the rain and it produced a pretty cool effect. I don't know if this is like super basic, but I thought it was interesting. [thumb]http://ryan.druginc.net/img/0001.jpg[/thumb]
