So I'm going to the UK soon and I'm gonna be spending a lot of time in rural areas. I want to get some good shots of squirrels and stuff. I'm pretty sure I can get a 70-300 non-VR lens for $50. Would it be worth it, or should I spend a bit more and get a 55-200 VR?
The first lens I used for wildlife was a Tamron 70-300 VC, which is probably one of the better 70-300~ zooms - sharp, and the VC is magic
You often hear people saying that stabilisation is not necessary for wildlife because you're using faster shutter speeds, but that's definitely not the case a lot of the time
With a variable aperture zoom, you're going to be fighting for light a lot, and in order to keep ISO down you'll find yourself dropping shutter speed
Good VR/IS/VC/OS lets you get surprisingly consistent sharp images at 300mm when you're all the way down at sub 1/100 shutter speeds
I frequently end up in completely overcast conditions, rain, shaded areas or all three combined, and I have sharp images from that lens taken at a 60th and even a 30th of a second which is barely possible without stabilisation unless you're using a tripod or resting against something and taking like 20 pictures
It's also just nice to have at any shutter speed - stabilising the image in the viewfinder and helping to get a larger quantity of sharp pictures by smoothing out any jerky movements you might make while shooting at awkward angles or tracking an animal
So, if you want to spend the money, stabilisation is fantastic to have, but I wouldn't drop down to a 200mm, I feel that is just too short for most wildlife; even 300mm requires you to be pretty close if you're shooting small animals and especially birds

Cheers for the advice!
I think I'm going to have to go for the non-VR lens for now - my trip is pretty soon. But I'll see how my body goes with a slightly higher ISO if I need to push it. I'm definitely saving for a VR lens though
First time posting here. it's been about a year since I've done any photography at all.

This might not be the best thread to ask this in, but I couldn't find a cinematography/editing thread so here it goes.
I've been racing for quite a bit now and have 3 gopro's in various angles. (Front, back and inside). Yet I never did anything with it. Does anyone know a good way to edit this into a video? I came up with this

But I feel 3 angles at the time time might become messy and annoyingly busy.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

3 angles at the same time will get messy. The viewer will dart back and forth between cameras. The ideal thing is to keep only one angle on screen at all times but switch between them depending on what's going on. For instance if you're passing someone you want the front camera, and as you pass them you switch to the back to see them eat your dust. Alternatively, you can do PiP, and have a smaller video of one of the angles at the bottom left/right, and still switch between.
Took some photos at a car meet, any criticism/comments?
I think you could close down your aperture a bit for a couple of these. Shallow DOF is nice for portraits and close-ups, but I think you'd be better off with the whole car in focus for some of these shots, this one specifically:

I do really like that second shot though.

Very, very nice! It keeps the attention on the action! Good work!

Thank you! It was quite easy to do with Sony Vegas, it has this option to kind of direct the multiple video streams by simply pressing the keys

Matching all the streams to sync up was a bitch tho!
However this does make me re-consider GoPro's. It's a real fucking hassle, changing battery's, using the remote (not finding the camera's or even the battery of that draining) not to mention the camera's turning on when I power them via in-car battery or staying on during unwanted times.
Maybe I'm overreacting but a system that (only?) runs on car power, without having to deal with battery's, with central control and good video quality would be perfect.
Went out hiking on the Olympic Peninsula for my birthday.
I think I'm getting the hang of editing color photos, though I might have over done it on a few.

the morning fog in the cities was beautiful. loved waking up early in shinjuku and just walking around before rush hour.
i wish i had more time to take photos in actual tokyo though, my two days there were really rushed. only took like 4 shots of the city.
Shot with my new Fujifilm X70. Definitely need to get used to 28mm.
