IGN, one of the main criticisms that I'm usually too lazy to voice, is personally I think you're going for too much detail in your photos. HDR is fun to play with but personally I find the photos turn out very flat, funnily enough. I don't really want to see 100% of the detail in the sky, nor the darkest shadows to be interested in a photo, or find it appealing. I feel I remember you saying that you liked some photos that were edited with a film look, and I would certainly recommend you branch out and try for that as well. You might find it suits you. Either way I do appreciate your passion and enthusiasm. You're one of my favorite posters in this thread even though I don't always care for the style of your photos. Keep on doing what you love bb
Typically I try to bring back the sky, I mean, who likes a sky that is just fully blown out? That was why I decided to use HDR on this one. I rarely even use HDR because I only found out how to photomerge just last 2 weeks :v
I should be clear- it's all personal opinion so obviously it's important that you create images that suit your taste. I just think HDR, or photomerge, creates an image that looks unnatural, and yours in particular I would say are slightly too dark for what I look for in a landscape photo. Even a small increase in exposure makes a big difference in my eyes. After/before The sky, I suppose, is not as important as the overall, but I know quite well what the sky looks like so it doesn't bother me if it's not 100% clear in a photo, as it's only one element.

they look identical to me look at your histogram and there should not be a sudden stop on either side because luminance =/= exposure and can be your friend
I also cannot see a difference, but beside the photo I used for comparison it is already a bit brighter (than your original), so a step in the right direction. Perhaps slightly darker than I would like personally but still a noticeable improvement.
accidentally shot in JPEG instead of RAW - turned out surprisingly well
That once happened to me aswell, but the photos still turned out nice
I suppose I should clarify- I've actually heard people claim that they like the look of JPEG better than RAW initially. I haven't compared the two myself but I've certainly seen it discussed often. For mine though, my current editing process for the cliche filmic look is very intensive and demands a ton of latitude, which I didn't think would be possible with JPEG. If you didn't need to edit so drastically, JPEG is perfectly fine. I'm not sure if film buffs would like the grain of the image but I still managed to pull what I think is a really good tone out of them. You can see how far I had to push it lol 3.5 full stops of exposure increase

I have to be more careful with the focusing, I'm not as good as I thought at this focusin yet and the viewfinder doesn't seem to be entirely accurate when indicating if something is in focus at infinity, so that's something I'll have to watch out for in the future. Overall I'm VERY happy with the first two rolls I've scanned, there are a lot of really nice shots that I might share later once I decide if I want to show family and faces and all that. Privacy is hard
Would anyone mind giving me some advice on how to make these better? You can be harsh, and point out anything you like
Absolutely, here are a few things I'd like to point out. For one, all of these photos are really almost taken at the same angle to the subject, at the same distance, which makes the the set very static and uninteresting. It also feels very 'pedestrian' for lack of a better word. By that I mean they all appear to be shot at eye level, standing on a sidewalk a short distance from the subject. My advice is to find different angles, find weird angles, try experimenting with proximity to the subject. It looks like you're definitely developing an eye for interesting compositions which is also excellent. As far as editing goes, they are mostly 'correctly' edited (no overblown highlights, no crushed blacks, proper exposure, etc) which is good practice but I think you could try pushing the limits and experimenting with the process. Take a few of your images and just go fucking wild on them in camera RAW/lightroom. It's fun and helps to understand all the settings and sometimes you make something really cool by accident. The only other advice I have is to just get out and shoot a lot, it's the best way to improve and if you're diligent about it you'll start seeing the results of your hard work very quickly!

I'll keep in mind what you've said about angles, and I'll definitely try your suggestion about going crazy with a few photos in Lightroom. I think one problem is that I see a lot of pictures on here that make me think "wow, that's cool!" but I don't know exactly how to replicate that cool factor, or at least create my own. I think it will help once I go back to my university when the summer ends though, because I think I'll have a lot more to shoot

It also doesn't hurt to ask how a photo was taken if you think it's really impressive, part of growing as an artist is learning from others and many people here don't mind elaborating on their process
