Was on a bus for three hours so I tried to do what Mooe94 does with his reflections, think it turned out alright but I can't decide which of these I think are better, what do you guys think? top one, more detail in focus / generally more interesting composition
Dunno if there's a general rule of thumb for posting frequency, sorry if I'm posting too much.
thanks a bunch man. been a good while since i actually decided to take photos, think i'm starting to fall back into it.
I'm holding you to it ;)
I am a stark amateur at photography. I just got my first "non-phone" camera, a Canon Rebel T6. I've been having a lot of fun trying to learn how best to use it! I took all of the following photos (along with several hundred others) at the Robot Restaurant in Tokyo. It was an incredible show, and these are my favorite pictures from it! I felt like they best captured the energy of the performance. What do you guys think? [t]http://i.imgur.com/QKE6Sup.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/PyLPgo3.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/bCrGYGC.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/CpmqxXC.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/eNdHZI4.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/JRwf4Xp.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/ttXX0at.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/2UFqGj1.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/I7hDwQO.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/UBlwhh4.jpg[/t] Do keep in mind that I'm brand new at any kind of actual photography. Any advice on how to work the settings or functions of the camera to produce higher quality images is appreciated, as are general framing. As a note, however, I didn't really have time to "plan" any of these pictures. The show was so fast paced that I was basically just machine-gunning pictures out and hoping that some of them turned out well! [editline]/[/editline] One issue I was having is that my camera was having a lot of trouble focusing in low light conditions, and even when it did seem properly focused, the images came out too dark to be legible. I tried adjusting the exposure time, but with such a high-speed performance, I couldn't find a sweet spot in shutter speed. If it was slow enough to allow enough light in for the darker scenes, it wasn't quick enough to capture the image in anything other than a big blur. How do I dial that in properly?
I'm no expert on shooting shows, as in I've never done it. But I would say you can't really plan ahead that far more than sitting at the right spot. So first you compose the background then wait for the foreground, usually the people on stage, to get in the right spot then shoot. But if I were you I'd probably just also shoot away like crazy hoping something turned out well. I don't know how much you know, but regarding the technology there are probably people who can explain it a lot better than me, but this is the gizd of it. There are three settings in a regular camera that affect light (and other things), these are: - Aperture (how much light the lens itself allows through), bigger aperture means a smaller f/x number, like f/3,5 and smaller aperture means bigger number, like f/9. In this case f/3,5 will let through a lot more light than f/9, however using f/9 mean the depth of field is bigger, f/3,5 also results is more vignetting and smaller aperture result in defraction but you can just google how these works, and it's also somewhat individual for every lens. You can compare the aperture to your eye, when it opens up more light are let through and when it gets bright it closes. - ISO (How sensitive the sensor or film is to light), higher ISO means the sensor picks up more light but it also makes the picture more grainy. That's pretty much it. - Shutter speed, don't think I have to explain this one. So what you want in this particular situation is to allow enough light through the lens and have the sensor sensitive enough so the images doesn't become too dark but at the same time you don't want too high ISO (unless it's part of the image) because then it becomes too grainy. So then you just have to find a balance that allows you to have enough of fast of a shutter speed, you can google how fast certain shutter speed affect movements, but I'd say 1/50-1/60 for a concert doesn't make everything seem super static, but still allows you to shoot without a tripod so static things and some less moving things appear sharp. For that you'll have to adjust aperture and ISO accordingly, there is no real numbers that everyone use, so don't take what I say as fact just some starter hints for you to get an initial feel then you should experiment what works best for yourself. I'm assuming you have a kit lens for your camera, it should say something like 18-55 3,5-5,6 on it. That means at the widest zoom, 18 mm, the biggest aperture is f/3,5 and on the most zoomed in, 55 mm, the smallest aperture is f/5,6. So a setting that works when you're most zoomed out might be too dark when you're fully zoomed. Also, if you find the shutter speed to be too slow and you can't (or don't want to) increase ISO or aperture you can change the exposure compensation to take slightly darker images (if you're in auto, or A) and then edit them afterwards. Getting framing well is really hard and I don't think I'm qualified to give you pointers about that. But what I usually try to is when I have the widest zoom on a lens I try to be as close as possible to something, and if something is farther away you zoom to make you seem closer, pretty obvious and you seem to have that going for yourself already. Thankfully it doesn't seem to have caused any problems and it was my phone camera, but I'm glad I know now so I don't try it again with the camera I get next month. Cheers!

Most of these terms have become buzzwords at this point but honest to god they're actually incredibly important. Take, for example, the first picture was posted on this page. The cityscape in the background is almost grouped into 3 parts (left, right, centre). If you couple that with the anchor on the boardwalk, you have almost a circle that your eye follows as it looks at the photo. You look at the buildings then to the anchor and then back to the buildings. The boardwalk itself even frames the photo. There's a bunch of other stuff like tension and whatnot but I feel like I've been wordy enough already.
