The only big advantage of using film I can take of is the possibility with larger formats. But pictures from a full frame, even a crop sensor digital camera can pretty much be made to look indistinguishable from 35mm film photos. I do shoot film in 35 mm and I do like how long exposure works with film, and how it looks when things are overexposed, but it's really not that different from any modern digital camera.

primarily aesthetic differences, film is kinda the opposite of digital in terms of how you shoot it. On digital, you can underexpose and bring your shadows up all you want, on film you overexpose and then capture the highlight detail during scanning.
Film handles highlights much better than digital, and certain films have enormous dynamic range
shooting film makes you photograph differently because you have certain limits to the film you are shooting, which results into better quality control while you are shooting and afterwards during the editing
digital isn't better than film and film isn't better than digital, it's a personal preference you have to figure out yourself.

I'd say a huge reason I like film is the world of cameras available that are incredible quality for prices much lower than digital. I've gone from SLRs to rangefinders, and now I'm on point and shoot, and digital can not touch the specs of muji-II yet. f/2.8, 35mm, with a flash, in a tiny weatherproof body, that's technically "full frame"? For $80-$120 bucks? That's what I like.

Good for you man! Keep posting here also, it's always fun to see someone improve over time.
And be carefull of falling into the mindset that buying more gear = getting better shots. Use what you have and make the most of it.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm definitely trying to hone in on taking good pictures with what I have, I'm just psyched to have options for better control over what I'm trying to accomplish, in terms of dialing in exposure and depth more precisely, having better options for low-light, etc. I actually learned this lesson again today, I spent a good 20 minutes trying to edit a photo that I took under kinda crappy conditions and with my phone's mediocre camera so that I could hopefully get it to look how I imagined it looking, and then I took a break from editing it and happened upon another picture that pretty much took itself, I was just lucky enough to find it and see it in the right mindset. I'll likely still keep taking pictures with my phone as well, but I'm really excited to see what I can accomplish with more varied equipment and options.
