Interesting. My personal favorite is the covered bridge, it reminds me a lot of Julius Shulman's work.

If you don't mind my asking, what stands out to you about those two? I can tell they've got something more than the rest of the set, but I can't put my finger on what that is.

For me it's the combination of subject matter in the picture with the composition that makes those pictures work better for me than the other pictures you posted in the set.
The first picture I quoted might be a bit sharply cut of by the worker, but I cannot see how the picture would've looked like in it's normal 3:2 ratio crop. I see a pole on the down right corner, so I guess that's why you cropped it like that because otherwise you would've seen the whole pole in the picture. Still a nice picture but if you could eleborate why you cropped the image that way that might me help understand it better.
I like the second one because the structure makes the car that's standing there look small, almost toylike, in comparison with the big structure. And the angle amplifies that effect.

:D Malmö is great, can get quite windy as fuck thou down here in southern Skåne. particular parts of the city (or the suburbs) can be very diverse from corner to corner, love it here
But lemme know if you make it here some day, though I might be shy with shooting with other's in a way, I tend to always be the only one with a camera in most of my company's for some reason. But those sessions hanging with someone shooting additionally have been p. fun of course

lol sure it's very multicultural (hardly only arabic, got sooo many different people here really). And like any big city it has it's fair share of crime, but it's very very overblown imo. I live on one particular street notorious as if being totally crimeridden, filled with gangs, etc.Basically only got it's reputation from negative mainstream media coverage. I mean some people get really irrational when they read one thing in the newspaper and tend to get scared thinking it's like that one headline 99% of the time.
It's not the quietest area at all, there are gangs here and so on, but in the past three years I've lived here it's mindblowing how out of touch the preconception of this place to the reality is. I really like it here, people are super nice :)

Ah, that makes sense. There's a post that takes up the remainder of the frame, which I wasn't able to crop out entirely due to the angle I shot the picture at. It's just a big grey post that's out of focus, which doesn't really help the composition. I totally missed it when I shot the picture, but I thought it was a good shot otherwise.

I do kind of subscribe to the "shoot, don't think" philosophy of street photography. If I see something interesting, I point the camera at it, frame things as well as I can, take the shot and move on. Which is why I miss things like poles.

it's totally up to you, and this may be what you're going for, but in general, getting closer with a wide angle does not lend to flattering faces

dunno how your subject feels, but she may appreciate you using a longer lens ;)

i think you would also benefit from moving your light sources a little further away, to create some more flattering shadows on the subjects face.

i see that you don't have much space, maybe you could move your setup outside and try playing around with different things, yes?

I did mess around with moving the lights and I did get the basic well lit shots but these ones where the closest to what I was looking for in my portrait shooting.

I do want to go outside, my problems are that its been snowing every other day (I go to school in north east America). My other problem is that I need a generator to power it all since power outlets are not very close to where I want to be.
