What would be the easiest/best software to make 3d printer models? I've tried blender but it's too hard for me any suggestions?
You aren't going to get much simpler than that buddy. Not unless you use a package that just gives you libraries of pre-made parts.
What would be the easiest/best software to make 3d printer models? I've tried blender but it's too hard for me any suggestions?
blender is probably the best of all major modeling packages to get into. 3ds maybe, but other than that nothing else is gonna help
I make all my parts in Google Sketchup.
Sketchup is basically the N-gon-o-matic-2000, i wouldn't advise you to ever touch it
Sketchup is basically the N-gon-o-matic-2000, i wouldn't advise you to ever touch it
I've never had any problem designing things to print with sketchup

ironically the local uni printer works best with sketchup converted stls
I've just ordered a Prusa i3 kit and wrote up my experiences so far: http://www.clarke.pw/blog/3d-printing---getting-started So far as actual designs go, I've only made a really crappy coaster so far. But I plan to make a stand for my desktop it's currently sitting on 2 planks of wood so the carpet doesn't block the bottom PSU fan, not ideal. I'm sure I can improve that
I use Maya, it's great. Pretty intuitive workflow, give it a try. For all you mechanical engineers and other sorts of geekery: I'm planning a huge overhaul of my printer (printrbot simple 1405), and one of the things I want to do is eliminate weight on the axises to get sharper corners. To do so, I want to remove the extruder motor from the carriage and bring it to a separate tower, guiding the filament from that tower to the extruder via a length of tubing and otherwise running the same extruder motor set up (hobbed gear + pressure wheel pushing the filament down). Have I forgot to consider anything?

So I've been doing a lot of work with the 3d printer club on campus during my little leave of absence. There are quite a few machines, and I have use of a graduate level lab with loads more printers when I really need it. I've been working on a few really neat projects that I should be able to share either in a few weeks or a few months for one of them. Both are pretty big and interesting topics in 3D printing so I'm excited to share them. Club website should be up shortly and I'll post a link once thats up since it features some of our neat projects, if anyone is interested. I mean, we do already have machines like Kiloprint: [t]http://i.imgur.com/5YBH4JZ.jpg[/t] Its a finicky bastard to get printing and it just INHALES rolls of filament (1.2mm dia nozzle) but it can be used to make some pretty neat stuff since it has a build volume the size of two Rep 2 printers at least. There's also one other FP'er in that club maybe he'll show up and mock what I've said :v: Also still don't have my printer working despite procuring a free smoothieboard. Smoothieboard caused my hotend to literally go up in smoke :I
Looks like someone hacked the Thingiverse web site, don't go there.
In other news I just now realized that its Thing-iverse not thing-verse and I've been living a lie the past two years.
gentlemen, I present the culmination of all 3D printing and additive manufacturing technologies: this is the future
So we got a free leapfrog creatr from the lab next to our lab, and after doing some initial tinkering and work to get it running one of our better members worked quite hard and got dual extrusion working! Made a neat phone case [t]http://i.imgur.com/KzXfGZ4.jpg[/t] and BATMAN [t]http://i.imgur.com/oWxNv2D.jpg[/t] Also got some heat-sensitive filament for the big printer I posted earlier, stuff is weird and adheres oddly.
I'm thinking of taking my 3D models to a place to be printed. What's a program I can use to see if there are an errors in the model first or any issues that'll prevent the model from being printable?
Convert them to .stl, then put them in a slicing program like Slic3r or Cura. If you don't see any errors in there you're good. Send them the .stl file.

Can only assume that this could lead to inconsistent extruder performance. My suggestion: Lighten the extruder assembly by using lighter materials, smaller motor, etc.

PLA or ABS? I've looked on a few websites but I'd like your guys opinions too, please.
ABS. I've had nothing but issues with PLA. PLA clogs my extruder, makes horrible bridges and overhangs, is very brittle. ABS can be sanded and finished too. My only complaint with it is it stinks when being extruded.
Whatever you want. I say PLA, smells better and adheres nice and easy to just plain tape. UltiMachine, Matterhackers for pla if you ask me
Thanks guys, much appreciated.
Thanks guys, much appreciated.
I'd say try both and whatever you do buy spooled stuff not unspooled rolls. Unspooled rolls tangle if you look at them funny and you will grow to loathe them. Spooled is more expensive but at least it unrolls properly.
Just don't buy anything from Sainsmart, their cardboard spools are awful.
12 hours later, my 13 hour print gets ruined by the spool tangling >:(

What does bronzefill and copperfill weigh generally compared with normal plastic fills and can you still use them with support material?
So if I'm after glow in the dark ABS, anyone have any recommendations? Currently looking at these guys.
So I posted a thread here, and someone told me that this place existed, so... here's what I posted. Hey, guys. I'm getting a customized 3D printer that's based on the Prusa i3, (Just so you guys know what I'm working with) and I was thinking of what filaments I should use? A friend of mine suggested PLA since it's less toxic(?) than ABS and said something about me not wanting to print using ABS in my room. However, a guy I know who teaches robotics for a living suggested ABS since PLA dissolves in water, apparently. I don't know, I'm new to all this. So, here are my questions. What kind of filament should I use? What are the benefits and drawbacks of ABS and PLA? Is it possible to get support material that dissolves?
