Its been a couple months since I tried making anything, so the first thing I did on Christmas break was fool around and try to make a little John Wick 2 inspired thingy.

that reverby hit is super awesome. Maybe some eq on the kick drum to make it heavier on the low end the bass you got going on the second part is sick. eqing out the higher end on it might make it less overwhealming tho.
It's a little fast for my tastes in trance. There's a little too much reverb. The trilling synth is too loud when it goes up an octave. It could use some more sidechaining. I like the bassline but it might be a little too distorted. You overuse the amen lead-in. String melody at 3:20 is kinda wonky. Chords are good. Nice sense of movement. The ending chord should be back at the root position of your scale.
Made some Chemical Brothers-Propellerheads big beat.

Bassline is sick and the flanger on the hats n stuff is fucking sick. MAybe make the snare a bit louder?

long 165 bpm dancy pretty breakcore track I did. I was going for some thing that sounded "cute" but WICKED while I tried new drum programming methods and synth patches.

An interesting modern take on breakcore. Usually breakcore is more "woody" but this seems to adopt a lot of modern electronic music tropes. The piano like synth is very good, though on my shitty headphones it's a little quiet for me. I'd like a section where the that piano like synth takes over as the main focus, but that's just a personal preference. You sorta do that at 2:55, and that section is very good. But moving the melody up the octave would give that part lots of energy around the 4:00 part when you introduce the synth in the background.
All in all I really enjoyed the track, even if the breakcore drum parts were loud as shit compared to the rest.
I got a melodica!

this is a really tightly produced track, everything seems to have a place in the mix, id say the base fundamental driving beat needs to be accentuated more, but if its edm or breakcore or its meant to be active on purpose then id understand

something slow and relaxing. i have a thing for female vocalists with light voices, especially this sample where i raised it 2 semitones so its even higher. the beat is supposed to follow a steady cadence, something completely non aggressive and chill. I also experimented with hardclipping my peaks for the final master process. it gives the kick this quick boomy rumbly tone, kinda like a battering ram. i make it my mission now for my kicks to drive the beat
If I have a song where I have an intro when the the drum part is more four to the floor, then a main drum part that's more spaced out with a snare on the third, how would I do an efficient transition?. The spaced out part has a ride hitting every quarter as well.

I had inspiration and wanted to see what I can make in 30 minutes so I did this

Just do a fill. Keep the kick going and change up the hats or the snare for 1 measure. Like this video: https://youtu.be/6W0N8POb16o

I love crazy stuff like this. The only real thing I'd have to say about it is that the drums near the end overwhelm the rest of the sounds, but I'm pretty sure that was the point.

I'm making an EP about the Internet and this is a song off it. I did a lot of experimentation with this song in particular.
Alright, so best VST (that costs money) for strings, go.
I have around $1000 to spend but preferably I wish to spend around $2-300, any ideas?

EastWest Hollywood Strings is pretty good, there's also a ton of different libraries for Kontakt if you own that.

I do not, I was thinking of getting kontakt first but you need to get the middle package for strings :( And a whole lot of other synths I honestly will never, ever, use, which sucks because the strings in Kontakt are some of the finest I've heard (and had the chance to use).
Fuck I'm getting the cables and bits needed for this tape machine, I'm almost there and fucking excited to start using it. Going to record my band's first album on it, they're almost as wet as I am. In the words of the guy who also used this same model (I found out after I bought it), "fuck that Ableton shit, get yourself a tape machine kids"
I've always wanted to get a tascam 4 track just for fun. There's something cool about physically having a piece of music in your hand.

Really looking forward to this coming in the mail
Looks pretty sweet, that oscilloscope looks really nice. I'd prefer it had more keys though.

No filters allowed when you make chiptune. If you want something less harsh, use a triangle wave instead of lowpassing it. The last note in the first bassline doesn't work too well. Maybe make it an A or an F. Also you need to be using bitcrushed noise a lot more. Your lead needs to be more melodic and its rhythm needs to be less random. I know it's cliche, but you should write the melody in pentatonic scale (that's D F G A C in your key) and maybe have one or two notes out of that scale.
I just got the Presonus Eris E5 studio monitors. But I've noticed it doesn't register really low frequencies at all. Are my monitors giving me an accurate representation of the sound?
Yo I actually have an important question.
So I'm building a home studio, and the acoustic treatment in this house is really poor. Do you think a few dozen regular pieces of acoustic panels + flat panels behind monitors + bass traps will work? I already know how to position myself and the 38% guideline - I'm just concerned about what to buy

They cut off at 53hz, which is pretty average.
Fuck me, the TE OP-1 looks so tempting. I love the idea of having a small DAW I can make stuff on, on the go. Does anyone here have one/Has anyone here used one? What do you think of it? It looks amazing from what I can see in all the videos I've watched so far.

It looks great but I'm kinda biased against it because my second favorite artist's worst album used it a lot.
I'm not sure this is the right place to ask because this thread is more focused on music production, but I'm looking into picking up the harmonica for fun. Found my dad's old Marine Band harp and I think it works be fun to mess with.
I have no prior musical talent or experience. Any top tips to point me in the right direction?

I feel the contour of the chords that kick in at 0:08 seems to have to little decay, I'd try to space it out over the entire note (or decrease the overall contour strength), to give it a smoother sound. I'd say the same for the pad that begins in 1:14. Also as Ott said, too many sounds are very obviously cut off which makes them sound way too soft.
----
Some recent WIP of mine. Still planning on padding some of the repetitive sections out, but I am waiting on that until I have aquired a proper microphone. Been mostly just fucking about with my new VSTIs for the most part but I really like the way they ended up sounding so far:

(for the first one)
The drone synth needs bass. I think a "breathing" bass would work well, like in the beginning of C418 - I lack an emotion. The piano actually works very well for the mood you've got going, but the lead synth needs more than 4 notes. You should modulate it a bit too. Same goes for the rest of the patterns, make them longer.
I don't have much to say about the second one, but you should save the piano bit for a breakdown. And make the synths more interesting, put some effects on them.
I'm getting really exhausted of the background frequencies im picking up with my Yeti, and decided its time to upgrade to like a proper mic and audio interface setup for vocals.
Currently I'm looking at the Shure BETA58A :
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002BACB4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
with a Scarlett Solo audio interface (I really only need the 1 in right now, keyboard obviously runs off straight usb)
Any other suggestions before I decided to spend about 300 dollars on the kit? I know Trent Reznor of NIN fame is a huge fan of the BETA 58A and it's a pretty well reviewed mic all around
I have no idea if this is the right thread to post in, but I've been interested in buying an acoustic guitar and learning how to play, sort of as a new hobby.
I don't have much interest in making music, but there are many songs I would love to cover.
I know electric guitars are easier for begginners, but I have no interest in them compared to old fashioned acoustic. I was just wondering what a good price range/model of guitar would be for a starter.
I have my eye on this:

The Rode NT1A is considered one of the better vocal mics for around that range. It's said to be relatively bright, very crisp and like, no self-noise. If you'd prefer something like that but with less high end frequencies the NT1 has a flatter frequency response as well. I just bought an NT1
Okay, fuck. My luck with tape machines just gets better and better. I'm going out tomorrow to buy a 1962 Silvertone 4-track tape machine, but the guy says it has a tube preamp in it which awesome distortion, so he uses it as an overdrive for his guitar. Imagine that, going on stage with a big Marshall cab and sticking THIS on top

I want a tube pre-amp for my scarlett 2i2 and sennheiser hd598s. The only problem with a setup like that is that its so clean that its very nearly boring: my old XB500's were a bit obnoxious at times, but they were fun to use. The sennys are spot-on for mastring and mixing work, and have an AWESOME soundstage but the lows are weak and everything else is just too precise to really enjoy. Gear like yours is just fun to have.
Speaking of fun gear, the behringer deepmind 12 is something I just became aware of. I like how it looks so far, although I probably won't be buying one. I was actually going to pick up a Jupiter 80 I saw on ebay: but then I got a speeding ticket, got in a fender bender, had my dog get attacked, and decided to take my dog to training. rip money. Prices still haven't dropped though.
Its frustrating because despite the frequency of touch screens and nice displays in devices that don't need them (like bloody refrigerators), find a workstation synth that has a nice display + touch screen is still harder than it really should be. There's no reason the FA08 and FA06, for example, shouldn't have really big screens tbh. I'm hoping NAMM might show some fun on this front, I still really want a workstation keyboard.
Lastly, ending this retardedly long blogpost, I've been itching to start making music again after my long "sabbatical" (making that film score drained me completely), but I moved to a new primary drive and lost most of plugin and Kontakt library in the transition. I still have my ableton sample folder, but my plugins are all broken due to path and dependency issues on my new drive. It kinda buzzkilled my drive to make something again :/

Oh, small addendum: would anyone be interested in a .pdf of my article on chord progressions and such? I wrote it for BassGorilla but wasn't paid for that one and they haven't published it or talked to me in a year, so as far I'm concerned its free game for those who want it.

That second one, I love the dark electronic feel of it, the piano line feels a little bit.... disjointed from the rest of the piece though? I really like what you're going for with it, but it feels like a single, stand out element rather than a piece of the bigger puzzle if you get what I mean.

quick little vocal test, speaking of dark electronic. really excited for friday so I can justify picking up a proper microphone and audio interface, the yeti has so many noise problems its not even funny.
specifically figuring out mastering right now, im putzing with EQs and Compressors just seeing what does what, this is what ive got so far.
