Hah awesome! We started one day apart so I'm totally going to make this a competition to see who can go the longest before missing a day whether you like it or not! :P [editline]21st February 2015[/editline] Thanks! I do all my own sound design most of the time (all the sounds on the 365 sc are done from scratch other than the rhodes in the first tune). For the drum stuff, listen to some footwork and/or slowfast dnb for ideas. There's tons of really creative drum programming going on in those areas right now and it's majorly inspiring :) Getting a step sequencer or something to play around with helps too for me since it lets you try weird stuff a bit more quickly. Intrepid sounds pretty good. I like synth brass but I wish it was a little bit more full. Some light distortion and/or chorus or something might help that a bit. MY ears are wanting the snare to have a bit more bite to it too.
very true; step sequencers are fun to play with
-snip- Here are the images (Day late I'm sorry!) Any idea? I know the brand, but I have no idea if it's a 1 row 2 row...etc I am clueless about accordions.
Well, apparently rows refer to button accordions so you don't have to worry about that. It's a piano-type accordion with what seems like a full bass, so the most common type of accordion here in the western world (not a bayan or a button accordion). If it's in shape and playable... the keyboard's chromatic like a piano, and the bass buttons you're just going to have to learn. (seems to be a 96-key stradella) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stradella_bass_system
very true; step sequencers are fun to play with
Very cool. Wouldn't mind less repetition though.
Here's a piece of shit I wrote in and hour with some stock pro tools plug ins lol
There's something about that which I like, it had me feeling the groove. You should expand on that. I didn't realise this thread went up in here, so heres a couple works from the past week: Looking for tips and such.
I didn't focus on mixing too much: Will edit with criticism. It's out of place with that great kick drum and snare. Try out either a trappy hi-hat or a grainy hi-hat sample. - The transition into those arpeggios in the chorus are kind of out of place with the opening verse, or at least the transition didn't work too well. Something about the chords you chose sound almost dissonant at first because of the jarring transition. - I like the synthwork, and I like the main arpeggio pattern you chose. Doo, doo, beep, bop, doo, doo, beep, bop. You can never go wrong with a good ol' 4x4 staccato arpeggio. In VG03: - Once the main thing kicks in around :26, it sounds nice. It needs some depth though, so layer like a crazy man. Fill in some "space" with some reverb as well. - There's some weirdness going on around at :50. Again, it's because of the strange arpy chords. - 1:23 made it work though - that sounds super cool! I don't know how to help when it comes to choosing chords because it's something that slowly developed within me. It takes some experimentation. BEHOLD, MY FIRST SONG: January 29, 2006.
I didn't focus on mixing too much:
Dude, the bass line with this works so well when the chorus-y part plays, all the higher synths carry the flow of the song, but the bass having an alternate rhythm totally dictates the beat in a really catchy way. And the ending build up part is amazing, I feel like this song would do very well in a club. Very well done :D Also your first song is really good, though your style has matured and is much easier for me to receive in your other song. You can tell you've come a long way. I'm trying my hand at hip-hop/rap for the first time. This is just a quick verse as like a proof of concept, to help me decide if my white-boy voice is acceptable enough for the style I wanna go for. (See: Earl Sweatshirt) So the beat isn't really fleshed out, I just wanted something to accompany the words. Please let me know what you think/what you'd alter.
I use ableton to do all of my music making... but I have no idea how to do any of the actual composition in arrangement mode. I do it all in session view... help???
I like the idea itself, I won't comment much on the background music since I like it a bunch, and since you said it's not really fleshed out yet. Good job on that! As for the vocals, they could really use some work IMO. It might be because of your recording setup but your voice doesn't really blend along with the track, it feels pasted on. Maybe try upping the higher/mid frequencies and lowering the lows just a bit, to prevent the vocals from "clashing" with the neat sub in the background. The panning on the vocals shifts around 0:56, sounded a bit off to me. As for the voice itself, the performance could be better as well IMO. It sounds unenthusiastic, like you're reading it off a page while the music plays in the background. Most raps I listen to sound like the performer feels very strongly about what they're preforming, I don't feel this here. I think adding some more "pep" to the voice would do you good. If you wanted a sound similar to Earl Sweatshirt try to emphasize your words to go well with the beat, right now it sounds a bit monotone, play with your pitch a bit. It just feels off to me right now, but I'm probably the worst when it comes to vocals so take my advice with a pinch of salt. -feedback ends here, sorry for the wall- I'm working on a new track with a good friend of mine, we tried mixing up some electro and thrash metal and so far it feels pretty nice! It's a very early demo, since we still need to re-record the guitars in a better studio and work on the mixing. And I've been working on this some more: I've posted this here before, but if anyone wants to give this a listen that would be grand. We're shooting a music video for this in a couple of months and I'd like to improve the quality as much as I can before we use it for the video.
I use ableton to do all of my music making... but I have no idea how to do any of the actual composition in arrangement mode.
No offense, but if you're seriously too lazy to look that up for yourself you might as well just stop now..
...well that's presumptuous... and rude [editline]24th February 2015[/editline] I'm looking for tips, guidelines, plan of attack type things. if anyone here uses ableton's arrangement view for composition could you tell me how you go about starting something new?
I usually make a few loops in session view to see which things sound nice together, then I press record and arrange which loops/clips start and end and from there I insert more things so you have transitions and whatnot. Or I change some clips so that they anticipate the next one. Also automation. KmartSqrl has sort of a point, you should try to show your own effort on figuring something out before asking a question, unless it's like something really specific that is obviously not something that you can Google. https://www.ableton.com/en/articles/getting-started-7-session-arrangement-view/ [editline]24th February 2015[/editline] But if I record things then I just record every part separately and smash 'em together and then retake parts if they sound bad.
is there any reason you guys think that i haven't googled it?
Well you didn't say it explicitly :v:
I shouldn't have to, it's up to me to search for the information i need
is there any reason you guys think that i haven't googled it?
Because your question was just "how do I use arrangement view". There's no answer beyond the answers that you can find in a few minutes of reading the Ableton manual. You just have to dive in and figure it out. That's kind of like asking "how do I play a guitar?"
i said i don't know how to do composition in arrangement view. i wanted your guys' perspectives on it. and then you decided to call me lazy
i said i don't know how to do composition in arrangement view. i wanted your guys' perspectives on it. and then you decided to call me lazy
Maybe their perspectives were that googling it would be a faster way to learn it?
i said i don't know how to do composition in arrangement view. i wanted your guys' perspectives on it. and then you decided to call me lazy
What works varies a ton from person to person (and for me, song to song). There's no set process really. You just lay some stuff down and start writing a song. Pretty much the same answer "how do I write music in session view" would have.
i wanted to know basically how people here go about making music with live
I don't use live, but I figure it's probably the same as any other daw in that you just keep trying until something works haha
I say be happy you aren't an idiot like me that uses Jeskola Buzz.

The solo is nice, the mix is good. Very nice! I threw this together in 20 mins as a joke for a friend, but it's got some new synths and stuff I've been working on:

Hardware company Elektron are having a community challenge on their forums, where their users are given this short speech sample and then have to make a 1-3 min song from it using one of their Elektron boxes. Here's my entry, I think I did pretty well, considering the Analog Rytm has 12 (8 simultaneous) monophonic channels. The winner gets their choice of Elektron box for free, so fingers crossed :v: Does anyone remember the sample challenges we used to do in the Gig Room years ago? I remember one using a stock FL Studio loop.

Tho I think you should have made the guitar slightly lower, it sounds a little bit too high pitched. It reminds me of Photon Project.
