I'm actually a motion graphics designer for a software company, mainly doing video promos for apps and stuff. But I've decided to attempt to try and make my own tracks instead of buying stock. Mainly just for fun. I've only been messing around with LMMS for like a week and I've never so much as picked up an instrument before so hopefully this is getting close to hitting the mark. Basically just going for a generic, corporate background tune while the video highlights software features. Listen to Soundcloud recording https://soundcloud.com/dyson-jtapp/corporate-track-wip-01-1 To me the piano melody doesn't sound quite right and it sounds kind of... shallow? Here's an example of the types of videos I've been doing lately if that helps at all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaB6gDh8dQY
Well you're absolutely right, the piano does lack depth. Right away I can tell you that your automation is lacking. Every note has the same velocity and you're getting quite a lot of shotgunning with your samples. Try thinking about how a real piano player would play the notes, and give them a little variation. Maybe look into getting a soundfont or a VST with a little better sample set. Don't take that the wrong way though. For someone who's never written music before this track isn't bad. You could stand to learn a bit about chord progressions and things like that, but again I wouldn't expect you to know any of that already. It's definitely in line with the theme of corporate background music. So I'd love some opinions on this little score I whipped up yesterday. I haven't done anything orchestral in a while so I'd love to hear some opinions. I do my orchestral stuff on newgrounds so sorry that I can't do a fancy embedded player. hello friends! i realized today that facepunch probably would have a music-making thread so i checked and, lo and behold, here it is. i'll be sure to be listening to all your stuff soon, but at the moment my band, Peroxide Ladybirds, just released a new EP, free to download. we're an experimental band, doing stuff like rock, electronic, lo-fi, and more.
that's pretty sick man, really reminds me of early bonobo / guts. I guess only things that are bothering me are the lack of a solid punchy bassline, and a bit more kick to the drums. part from that, i think it's a really good beat
That's a good point man, one that I'd been thinking about a lot when I made the beat. I would usually work with a tightly tuned sub-bass in most of my beats but I wanted to see if I could find ways of mixing in some natural low-ends. Aside from this EP, I have an LP in the works and every single beat has a super tight bass-line. It's kind of a nu-jazz type album. I'll share some of that stuff when I get a minute to respond to someone elses work with a good amount of focus and attention. Unfortunately that's the frequency range that's really high in your mix - boomy rather than bassy. Once I finish my exam i'll see if I can give a tweak in Reason to show what I'm trying to mean.
i felt like the entire track was building up to something epic but it just never happened. it still sounds great though, has a nice groove to it. cool visuals for the video too rerecorded an acoustic song i wrote about a week ago. still not entirely satisfied with the final result, i'll probably end up rerecording some of the parts, but i felt like i should share my progress anyways
posted this and never got feedback. i'm considering re-recording it to make a final version but i'm not sure where to start. any feedback?
Was a little nostalgic today. Made this. No mix, no nothing. Just plain melody. Your literal chorus could use more voices (and maybe more people than just yourself). Maybe put some reverb on them or something. I think you should get some friends together to sing the chorus and do it all on one mic for that acoustic aesthetic. Your singing voice is excellent. [editline]5th May 2017[/editline] Another thing about the chorus, you should have the voices come in softly and get louder. A slow attack.
Was wondering what you guys think of the mixing & mastering in this song? I do everything in my room with a (borrowed) cheap mic, guitar and a laptop

I would imagine that part took the most time. The mixing/mastering is as good as it needs to be for this kind of music. Nothing really peaking/piercing/clipping, nothing drowning other things out, nothing sounding too dry or quiet. The bridge was done especially well in this regard. Super well done, dude!
Nothing wrong with jerry-rigging, I'm not a sound engineer so I can hardly explain good ways of compressing. I wing it with mixing most of the time, I slide every dial and listen by ear because I don't quite grasp the science of it all. The drums are tight though, some different mixer effect might lift it a bit more. Play around with different plugins and stuff. That e-piano(?) has a nice dynamic, I like the reverb on it. Mess around with some different things. It's a bit too static at the moment. Fuck around until you start hearing that wow factor. The compression is fine by me, it hits hard enough. I have a lot of things I could share from various different projects but I don't want to post to much. I'll keep it sparing, I like the verbal ping-pong in this thread, it's very stimulating. This is from a nu-jazz type of neo-soul album I'm occassionally working on outside of my illustration work. I've got like seven-ish tracks done. This one is more electronic inspired than the rest, and I've got some other melodic works that I'll share later on.
Here's what I've been working on lately: Not sure what I'm going for with this. Came up with the bassline first without realizing it was in odd time and then just decided to go with it and build the rest of the track around that. I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to mixing.
First off I just wanna say I love the synthesizers, and the weird timing along with the unharmonic chords/melody gives it a really nice urgent vibe. It reminds me a lot of the DnB sountracks from games like The Binding of Isaac and Paranautical Activity. I'd work on your kick+snare though, there isn't enough kick in the base and the snare sounds too wooden - try layering different snares together. The synth that comes in at 1:39~ and comes back again in the end may be a tad bit too loud, but that's just me being nitpicky.
Working on a conceptual EP at the moment, sort of like an Alternative Hip Hop project of sorts. There's a track prior to this one, this succeeds the intro track. I was gonna post that, but there are some issues with the progression and melodies right now so I've got that on the backburner to address.
Can't really say much since I'm assuming there's gonna be a rap track on top of it? It's a good, relaxed beat, perhaps a little too relaxed for my taste, even boring, but in context and if there's gonna be vocals or something on it would probably help a lot.
I'm not good at building expectations for my music, so I figure it's best to just drop it here and let people listen.
More percussion in the background! Heavily reverbed claps, stereo enhanced finger snaps, stereo delayed toms, I'd just love to hear more percussion going on to spice up the rhythm a bit.
attempted doing something a bit more housey, but instead turned into some acid thing
I like it but I feel like there's something, substance like, mid-high frequencies missing, the thing that starts at 0:40 helps with that so maybe it's fine. Also, maybe it's just me but there's something about the high end on that kick that really sticks out - it sounds fine toward the end when it's muddled in the mix but on it's own I really don't like the sound of it.

More reverb on the piano, it sounds very stale at the moment. The rest of it is great though. Not entirely rap styled beyond the instrumental, but going for more of a contemporary folk type of delivery. The theme of the lyrics which have already been written are about three different perspectives of death. I'd post lyrics but this isn't the place for it and the verses are very long and stream of consciousness. It's the most fun I'd ever had story-telling.
Man that's some chill stuff. The phone calling makes me nervous though hah!
My friend said that too. He said it's unsettling. I've written lyrics for it, it's an electronic jazz track part of a nu-jazz project. I had a revelation recently about how I can't necessarily live without technology anymore and lo and behold this was the result. I'm gonna listen to this track when I get a minute from eating pizza and such. Will probably edit this post with my response.
I think it sounds mixed quite well. I don't know a lot of DnB so I might not be the best one to critique. I think it sounds cool though. The 'wah wah wah wah wah' on the background might make the whole thing little stale though. Maybe a little less compression on that one? Or something.. More high frequencies might help to bring some life into it too. Give the things that you want close to the listener low lows and high highs and cut those down on the things you want to move to the background maybe? I don't know a lot of this stuff though, I do a lot just by listening and trying and trying good work! :) EDIT: maybe use a multipressor instead of a compressor when you just want certain frequencies to duck down

I'm in love with the main melody, and the bassline really helps to drive it along. The only problem I can think of is that it might take a bit too long to build. That said it's not a huge problem because I can listen to that melody and bassline for days.
I have a lot of things I could share from various different projects but I don't want to post to much. On the technical side I can say it's sounding super clean, I can hear everything. I think you should go fishing for better samples though, especially for some new snare samples. The kick and hats sound good even though I'm not a huge fan of automating the panning on hats that intensely. On the composition side I think it sounds quite good, I think it could use a stronger hook, but as far as a foray into DNB it's sounding really good so far. Much better than my attempts at DNB. ____________________________ I haven't posted in ages because moving cities and all, but I have a few tracks I've been working on: A remix of a Lane 8 song Another housey thing idk what this one is

For so long now I've been really into the idea of trying to mix synthwave with old time funk, but it's really fuckin hard to pull off. Blues just doesn't translate well into electronic music.

It came out alright but I haven't been able to use it for anything so far. I also just found out that Toby Smith of Jamiroquai passed away last month. I don't know how I didn't find that out earlier. Not really old time funk. It surprised me though. Sorry for going off topic.

I got the preset from here but the new, updated version is beta-only so you'll have to wait for BWS 2.1 to release.

I've only recently started making this stuff so it's motivating to hear this, I updated the song just now (SoundCloud pro makes things simple there) with a little more reverb and FX on a bunch of channels. I'm still learning, so this has really helped!
Blues just doesn't translate well into electronic music.
Blues is rooted in live instrumental and vocal performance. So you can't really expect good results if you're trying to make it entirely out of computer-programmed sequences. So you should learn to play some licks on a keyboard or guitar, and incorporate that somehow. I'm not sure what specific type of funk or blues you're referring to, but there are some really good bluesy electronic tracks out there that could serve as inspiration. Vangelis is the king of synth blues. "Blade Runner Blues" is infamous, but that's probably too ambient for your needs. Check out "Dervish D" from his album "Spiral", which is rhytmic and makes good use of the 12-bar progression. Mort Garson shows a more playful side of it in his track "Baby Tear's Blues". It might also help to listen to jazz fusion and prog rock keyboardists. As for modern funk and synthwave, it's a match made in heaven and quite easy to pull off if you know how to make a good groove. And it's pretty much already a thing, it's called electro-funk or boogie and it has been around since the 80's.
