Sounds like a good game soundtrack. Is it all samples? It could use some more treble though. Repetition isn't inherently bad, but the song is a bit too "heavy" for it to sink into the background just browsing the web. It might work better when playing a violent video game. The only real problem I had with it was that the drums were too static. You use the same snare over and over and over again in rapid succession, with no changes in loudness or pitch. [editline]this is a fake edit, i just use it as a line break[/editline] I made vaporwave I guess. I really like the breakdown, center extraction is an amazing effect.
Kinda funny that you mention it sounds like a song in a video game. That's what another person said with a different song. I was kind of going with the direction that the music would fit more in an animated scene than a video game as each part of the song would correspond with a segment in animation.
hey i've got some questions about general youtube stuff my bandmate and I are planning on focusing on youtube and becoming like a musical channel dedicated to our music and stuff in order to run this channel as well as i possibly can i was wondering if you guys have any musical youtube channels to suggest that I can study. I already follow FrankJavCee and Red Means Recording but i'm looking more towards a channel dedicated to a band in addition, i'd also like to know what kind of content you'd hypothetically like to see on this channel. we're already planning on recorded performances and more conventional music videos, but maybe there's more stuff a viewer would like to see? maybe even stuff completely unrelated to the band or its music like for instance: 1. cooking videos?? 2. equipment unboxing/reviews? 3. tour vlogs? (in the extremely unlikely and hypothetical event that we went on tour) 4. audio/video podcasts? (i'm imagining this pretty much as a radio show; news chat, interviews with our other performer friends, music chat, all around breaks of music) if you want to take a look at our channel so far, it's here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPVjPueJBDF4J8O5soxPvaw though keep in mind it's still really bare right now sorry if i broke any rules by not critiquing but since i'm not posting a track i think it's fine

They do skits and "what if" scenarios (what if we played a 1-string guitar etc). The only other channels that come to mind are Caravan Palace and their roadtrip montages between tours, but it's the music that gets them views.

It's pretty repetitive. It could use a 303 bassline or something. In general it needs a lead instrument. You've got a good rhythm, but you need to do something with it. I'd say extend out each section of this to be longer and make them a little more sparse (rather than packed like you got it). Let each note of the arpeggiate and have their time in the sun. Also aim for a little more upbeat (majors and the like) "corporate" sound if you know what I mean. Like not just working on songs here and there? Me and a mate are currently close to finishing up a 10 or 11 song project and are planning a self-organized tour up and down the West Coast (Seattle-Oregon-Cali-Arizona) along with release on various streaming mediums. Anyone with experience of this stage of music? Also I'll be following posters in here on soundcloud. Let me know if anyone wants to put up Instas, twitters; I mostly use Insta for music related postings these days since there's so much reach on that platform.

What is Instagram? Last I checked it was just photography and selfies.
What is Instagram? Last I checked it was just photography and selfies.
It's like other social platforms except its photo/video clip centric instead of text-centric like twitter or everything-centric like facebook. Generically its for selfies and life-photos but there are far more creative uses for it. Frankly its been my fav platform for awhile since there are HUGE communities of artists that post really interesting curations of art in many different forms. This ranges from the ultra common nature/hiking photography accounts to music reviews, clothing, architecture, glass-blowing, pretty much anything you can think of. Basically if you have an interest, there are amazing instagrams out there that capture other people living and breathing that same interest/passion so its a cool place to go for inspiration and interaction with communities. It's all about who you follow and what you put out and it cuts out the bullshit of Facebook and Twitter for the most part.

I highly recommend it for all musicians. It's an instant way to communicate with any followers/fans, you can live stream concerts, post stories of studio time or song-making and spread word about releases.
i figured i had to make a band instagram after i saw what instagram did for fidget spinners and that goop shit
Okay, posting a rough draft of the thing I've been working on where ALLLL the sounds came from the same hardware synth. The music is done but the mix isn't. I think the EQ is pretty out of whack(?) but I'm running into trouble fixing problems without creating other ones, which is why there might be some pretty obvious things that aren't right. Also, I'm going for more of an authentic soundtrack sort of effect and not so much a modern synthwave style. You'll notice there really isn't any percussion other than the kick, and I'm not looking for it to punch a hole straight through the mix. I really love that track. I would buy an album like this in an instant.
This is a really cool sort of ethereal kind of track. I need to get my hands on one of those Oberheim synths, and hope that I can make sounds as cool as you did in this track. I can't reliably comment on the mix, since I'm on my work headphones and not my monitor headphones at home, but it sounds pretty solid from what I can tell. Doesn't feel like anything is clipping or distorting, except for maybe around 2:52 when the track gets slightly too loud imo. I know what you mean by "fixing problems while creating other ones". Mixing can definitely be a balancing act, but it sounds like your mix might be eased a bit with some selective compression on your mid to lower ends, and soft EQ-ing on the higher ends. Overall, very nice work. I really like the retro sounding synths, such an appealing sound. Keep it up! Sort of an indie electronic thing(????) I improvised.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I have definitely spent countless hours programming synths but this was my first serious mixing effort beyond say, automating faders for a few projects in Reason. I just go back and forth a lot thinking "alright, it's not a super punchy house track and should be atmospheric and deep" but I worry that it could always be tighter and more present somehow. I have no problem with avoiding clipping but, e.g. I'll be pretty happy with how it sounds on my stereo speakers, but then I'll go and put my headphones on where it should sound more defined and it'll seem like I've got a blanket on my head, so I'll bump the highs a bit, but I don't know if it's the headphones' fault, blah blah. One thing I'll say about retro synth sounds is that it may be a good idea to start with an initial patch and see what you can do with just some reverb and the features that were on a classic synth. No effects, no fancy character mods. Try out stuff like vibrato and PWM on every patch you make.
Speaking of retro synth sounds, I thought I'd share one of my all-time favorite VSTs. And it's free! It's a digital recreation of the Ensoniq SQ-80/ESQ-1. I should be able to implement this stuff no problem but I'm not 100% sure what or where you mean. Also random question for everybody, is dynamic range just up to preference and the kind of track you're making? This recording has long stretches with loads of headroom, which could be great considering what I'm going for, but I could squeeze a lot more volume out with a pretty tame maximizer.

It toes the line between cheese and not cheese, but I think it works well. Don't think you should start out with a halftime kick, it just doesn't really fit. Snare is very cool, but you shouldn't stop those glorious 909 hats for it. I like the pumping sidechain, and the lead synthline is pretty great. Nice work. The fast one was like "yeah, I gotta have something like that if I'm doing a throwback soundtrack tune". It's the Oberheim being sent through a Moog with much more aggressive, percussive envelope setting that's chained to the same midi signal.
