everything about this is dope except that lead bell/xylophone sound kinda overpowers the best parts of the song. [editline]18th July 2017[/editline] got a track for u surfers out there
holy shit you tore my hearing apart, lower the overall volume other than that, it reminds me of some 90's LA soap opera intro, good job I guess -------------------------------------------------------------------- I just finished a track, talent struck and did it all in two days. Also did the video (YT compressed the shit out of the video smh)
holy shit you tore my hearing apart
good
recommended synths for under $600 aud (secondhand gear is fine with me)? leaning towards something like a micro korg. i don't need something super fancy, i can run it through an additional effects processor or stomp boxes so i'm just looking for something that comes with great tones. bonus points if i can still use it as a midi controller in a daw.
micro korg is a good machine. if it fits your budget it's a very good option. there's a reason they're so ubiquitous.
Why does professionally mixed stuff sound fine when played over a cell phone style speaker? Is there learning material on "how to mix so it sounds good without headphones"

I will warn you, analog gear comes with noise. It's not a lot but it does become noticeable if you drive it a ton. Personally, I don't mind it. It's an aesthetic. Also, there's no velocity and it's monophonic. You can still get dynamics with staccato and legato, though. Also, there's no MIDI automation of parameters. You either need to modulate note length, or control them directly via CV.

You can get one shipped over from the us for $80 USD, and I found one used (mine's used) on reverb.com that comes out to around $510 USD or $655 AUD.
Speaking of retro synth sounds, I thought I'd share one of my all-time favorite VSTs. And it's free! It's a digital recreation of the Ensoniq SQ-80/ESQ-1. It goes for about $680, probs cheaper second hand. It's a 4-voice analog and sounds great when distorted, especially with tube amps.

Also, doesn't FL use a kind of "container" for all plugins that you can use to change the pitch range outside of the plugin itself?
What Ott said, but that kinda sounds neat as-is. When it should pitch it down 1 octave it only does like 0.2
Yes, but that one does the same. When it should pitch it down 1 octave it only does like 0.2
Press the Modes/Emu button on the right hand side of the VST until bend appears below the top left hand adjustment knob. If that's how the master pitch slider behaves I'd be wary about using it though. Are you automating the slider as an effect or simply using it to preview a key? If you had a pitch bend automation lane set up for the VST it sounds like you'd run into loads of problems. I hope it's the VST, if master pitch in FL studio = pitch bend, that's pretty dumb.

Reminds me a bit of old Mau5 songs, and it drools Prydz style also. Beautiful track. I would have left the main melody ringing a bit more on 2:19 tho'. I think the snare needs just a little bit more prescence. Other than that, good job mate. I love this genre of electronic music. On other words, most of you may have already heard this, but I've finished a track I've been working on and off for the last 2 months, to a point I'm satisfied with the outcome (which is pretty rare BTW). I must do some work on eq's and compressions, and some fillers and effects, but the overall musical structure is done. What do you think guys? I went for a soundtrack style, then for something trancey, and got caught in the middle.

I like the chord progression introduced after 1:00, great dynamism. Starting to kind of remind of the Tron 2010 OST. Although the buildup is pretty cool, I feel like there isn't enough happening to justify a practically 4 minute long intro. In fact, the whole track sounds like an intro, without really turning into anything interesting until like the last 30 seconds, so this might actually be best as a track in an OST for a movie, which I think was part of what you were going for? Overall pretty cool sound design, though. made some kind of tokyo nightclub dance track

I think I'm changing it a little. Maybe variating it a bit more, or making it shorter. I'd definitely lower the kick on your track a little bit. And I'd use a graphic equalizer automated to do the filter you do on around 2:19, it gives you better control and better overal quality. I also felt the track has too many breakdowns on the main perc base, you could try making it a little more repetitive. You've got some nice sounds going on there, good job!

The intro is really cool, those driving plucks sound great it's got some really good atmosphere. I'm actually really happy it doesn't drop into a drum beat, the continuous build really suits it. I do like the lead arp though, the melody sounds good too. It sounds cool near the end where most things drop out and its the kick and driving bass. _______________ Screwing around with a music box soundfont

Super solid stuff, you're a talented dude(/dudette/gender neutral person/attack helicopter???). Keep it up! anyways, i think that this genre is called chillstep? Other than I love it, especially the 1:30 bit, so groovy! I thought, man I have to sample that line! This song kind of embodies everything thats gone through my head lately. Beats and the inability to feel.
i think that this genre is called chillstep?
Dude, to echo MedicWines advice. I think he means it could sound great if you filtered out the highs on the arp and slowly brought them in. I'm then thinking a little "jump" to the filter settings you have now and it'd create a great effect. Run that throughout the song and have a feel of it. ------------------ SO, I said I was working on something very very different to my normal music. I'm on the edge of calling this one finished and mastering it properly. Would love any feedback and even just appreciate a listen.
What do you guys do to ensure that your low end is right on all hardware? I know you guys said the mix for my thing sounded good and I love the way it sounds on a few different pairs of headphones and some stereo speakers, but I have a pair of computer speakers with a big subwoofer and the kick and bass stand out too much compared to other things that I listen to on them. I've made some progress fiddling with the compressors and different EQ curves but it doesn't feel quite right.
SO, I said I was working on something very very different to my normal music. I'm on the edge of calling this one finished and mastering it properly. Do you have a different way to do that effect that sits in it a little better? Right now it sounds like you pulled the mids way up without accounting for the change in volume or something.
Is it fine to run a mic straight through guitar pedals to a guitar amp or is there any sort of preamp/mixer I need?
Is it fine to run a mic straight through guitar pedals to a guitar amp or is there any sort of preamp/mixer I need?
In general, the louder a signal, the less noise is introduced (proportionately). That said, guitars don't have preamps either so you should be fine.

if I could describe this in two words, I would say it is "rather good". it's very subtle, it doesn't attack your ears with high end, but it sounds a little muffled towards the 3 minute mark and on. I think it's the kick that's just a little overwhelming, but it provides a good amount of substance to the mix. I feel like this would also sound good if it was slowed down vaporwave style for some reason. it's got that modern take on 80s new-age mall music and I mean that in a really good way. it could be background music in one of Dan Bell's videos, for example. here's a new thing I started today, already 3 iterations deep on it. i feel like i am cranking out lots of demos but not lots of full songs. this one has potential in my opinion

[editline]18th August 2017[/editline]
here's a new thing I started today, already 3 iterations deep on it. i feel like i am cranking out lots of demos but not lots of full songs. this one has potential in my opinion
It sounds real good, I just wish there was some sort of theme going through it, more variety in terms of chords and progression! [editline]18th August 2017[/editline] So I'm making music for this 3rd person arena laser-tag sorta shooter, but I really need some feedback. https://soundcloud.com/messier-51/zg2/s-wyYiE I'm trying to get that tense but not in your face vibe, but I don't know if the whole grooviness takes away from it or if I'm just not managing my 16ths right or what's going on cause I'm not sure it's actiony enough and I can't tell if it's down to sound design and little tweaks to the progression or if the entire composition just set out in another direction from the start.
