Apart from that, if you do some basic jamming setup like charger/audio-inteface/midi-keyboard (assuming the audio interface has no midi in) you're already fucked unless you go for the 4-port version which is quite expensive...
But the USB-C push I can understand, it is superior. But adaptation will be really slow because USB-A is so common and cheap.
I and my co-artist are planning on releasing a project weve been working on for a few months (spotify, bandcamp, etc). Would anyone be interested in doing a pre-review so we can get some feedback to implement before we release? Itll be close to 8 or 9 songs. DM if interested.

I'd like to if someone else already hasn't!

Seems like a good place to start on. The synths remind me of Mass Effect (in a good way). I like the layering of the synth arpeggios. gives a nice call and response feel to it.

I messed around with a new project, I think this one got a bit more urgency to it. It's less groovy, but it's on a higher tempo which I'm starting to think is the main issue with the previous one I made.
Compared to the other track, this one in the context of a laser tag type shooter fits a lot better. The bass line could use some variation as it just sounds a little spammy, but I like the fast paced feel of it.

Awesome, I love the guitar work. Cool psychedelic sound. I think a break somewhere would be nice, and if I were to master this track, I'd brighten up the drums a little. I love the synth melody.
Here's a short track I made. Usually I quantize my drums but this time I haven't, so they have a pretty groovy sound. I also don't use strings very often, but I think it sounds pretty sweet. I'm sure you could rap over it, but I haven't gotten into lyrics yet.
Thing i finally released after procrastinating:
I like it a lot, the synths are smooth and it has a nice warm atmosphere, also the chord progression is pretty nice. If there's anything I would pick at mostly just to pick at anything, it's that the snare is a bit to quiet and far off, it's too low-profile.
I liked both tracks actually, they have a lot of potential. If you're looking to bring a feeling of action to them, try adding sounds that take up high frequencies, like cymbals, white noise and "bright" synths, since high frequencies tend to give an "energetic" feel. If you break up the sounds a lot (like you did in the 16th high hats and the bass), you also will get a feeling of "speed". Check out this track to see what I mean (it's from a racing game): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrI9dKbY5GI
For tension you can use long, sustained notes and effects like sweeps and risers. Also little breaks in which you completely stop playing the low frequency content for a bit can create a lot of tension. What Ott said is good also.

The feel of this one is much better. You should make the bass stab pump more like you had on the last one, it's a bit static as is. Also, when the 16th hats come back in, experiment with having some hits open and some hits closed. This is really good, I'm getting hyped just listening to it. I love that echo-ey synth that comes in with the beat.
Thank you guys for your feedback and tips it's been really helpful and I worked up a new project that I'm pretty happy with and will work with, wouldn't mind some feedback though.

Those guitars are really cool. I'm not a fan of the really prominent band pass but I like the rest. Nice progression too.

This has a nice atmosphere, I think it would sound sick with a punchy snare. I also think you should pan some perc hard right to make up for the left panned hat.

If you had a bigger sounding kick that intro would be insane. It sounds good the rest of the track it just seems like that intro sounds like it should be super heavy. I love the digital sounding arps in the background, makes it sound like a 90s rave. I also really like that pluck playing the melody, simple melody but effective.

Yo. I am thinking about buying a basic external soundcard for my Laptop, just to record a guitar and a mic, I also wanna maybe maybe use Ableton with an aftermarket Push as a basic drum computer.
So questions:
What soundcard? Needs to be USB.
What other alternative is there for having basic beats?

I've heard good things about the Focusrite 2i2
I just bought a Korg Minilogue and I'm fucking loving it so far. My buddy and I are starting to really get a quality analog studio setup. Right now we've got:
-KORG MS-20 mini
-KORG Minilogue
-Roland Juno-D
-KORG Volca beats (it's lame, looking to replace it with something else)
-KORG SQ-1 Sequencer
-MOTU Timepiece AV
-TC Hall of Fame Reverb
I think my next purchase might be the TR-08 or something similar, we need a quality drum machine next. I think the biggest and most important gear pickup was that MOTU Timepiece, my buddy got that used for under $100 and it has easily made the biggest impact on our recordings. Being able to control 8 separate devices at once within a DAW and not have to deal with the usual latency of daisy-chained connections is absolutely amazing.

here's a little demo of what we've been doing with the hard synths so far. no need for criticism or judging, just excited to share the fruits of our labor. truly, it's not about the cost or amount of gear you have. but having more gear sure does simplify the workflow....heh heh heh

Are you specifically looking for analog-style drums or would you be fine with a sampler? Elektron has quality options for both (Analog Rytm or Octatrack/Digitakt, respectively) but they're pretty expensive, considering you've been buying the cheaper Korg stuff.
Roland's boutique TR's are pretty limited in sonic possibilities, so i'd recommend the more fully-featured TR8 if you want 808/909/707 drums.
The Arturia Drumbrute is analog has a really good sequencer, but it kinda requires compressors, EQ's and other effects to sound good. Thankfully it does have individual outs, so it could be worth looking into that.

I like this, hope you expand on it
Bought myself a new guitar on Sunday. A Reverend Double Agent, 20th anniversary limited edition, for my 20th anniversary as a human being. Seemed appropriate! I'm in love with it. My girlfriend doesn't get to experience me as sensually as this guitar has been in the last few days. It plays great, it's gorgeous, and going from an entry-level Epiphone Les Paul with two humbuckers to this versatile animal with its bridge humbucker and a P-90 in the neck, not to mention an infallible Wilkinson tremolo bridge which refuses to ever send my guitar out of tune, is a joy. The "Bass Contour" knob, a Reverend exclusive as far as I know, it also a treat. It's quite simply an opposite Tone knob; Tone rolls off the highs, while the Bass Contour rolls off the lows.
Nobody I showed it to outside the store actually knew of the brand's existence, so if you're out there prowling for a new instrument, give Reverend a check. It's worth a try to see if you connect to its particular uniqueness.

I really like this. I dunno if it's the style you're going for, but I think a nice slow and echo-y drum kit would go great right around the "climax" at 1:30 or so. Think like some of Porter Robinson's newer sadboi™ songs.

We meet again papkee! I didn't know you made music and mapped haha. I really like your song. You have a great sense of progression and transitions. I'd classify it as a more mellowy EDM. Nice work. Very cool stereo effects. The snareclap sounds a little...cliche? Like the default FL Studio one. The synth is maybe a little too resonant? Sounds very sitar-ey. I really like the choppiness of it all. You should put some tape noise in after the lowpass IMO, just to fill that empty space.

The acapella doesn't really stand on its own very well without supporting rhythm, you might want to make it looser, timing-wise. The acapella doesn't really fit in general. The chords and backing would fit something a little chiller. Maybe you could fade the acapella in and out throughout, but mostly have the instrumental in focus. I wanna hear it.
https://clyp.it/4kogoi44?token=8738a9f09283253be67d9e7a09e37a73
The kick is out of tune (too sharp). It sounds pretty dopey right now. I love the overdrive you have on that synth, and the glitch effects as well. I don't think you should be worrying about mixing just yet, you've still got a lot of arrangement to go. As for a bass, I think a nice sub-bass with some harmonics (but not a lot) would fit if you sidechained it behind the kick. Check out these free waveforms, some of the smoother ones make great basses.

Interesting synth, the pluck is almost too loud, but I think you should keep it like that. The piano sounds very Newgrounds-ey, I like it. The snare has almost no punch, did you high-pass it? You're also sticking to pentatonics a little too much, you gotta spice it up a little (like you did with the bluesy piano). I really like these synths, they're plucky without being too cheesy. The bass is especially cool with that fifth in it. Maybe tone down the reverb a little bit, but it's fine.

Very nice buildup (a little too long though), if you want to make it more atmospheric you can add more noisy elements to it. You should add some more melodic elements (piano, etc) to get that trance feel.

There's some ugly sounds in there, they sound like the lowest strings on a piano. Not sure what else to say about that. As for your beat, you should make the snare buzz/roll get quiter with each it. Right now it sounds like your DAW froze or something. It's a little jarring. Nice atmosphere though, I dig it.

Like, in this specific case I cant figure out the tempo and what the hell to do with the velocity. But this is just one song, snare rolls are common and none of them suck as bad as mine. All the stuff I've seen online are how to do a more southern sounding roll. I just wondered if there was either an simple technique or if anybody knew of why I'm only finding the wrong stuff when I searched for it, thats all.

The second video is using an 808 snare at 8th notes, the first video is using a 909 snare at 16th notes. I just downloaded a 909 VST (DR-910) and turned all the knobs up (tune, tone, and snappy) and got pretty much the same sound. There's no velocity or swing on the snare drum, but the bass does swell up. Here it is looped twice.
