Hah awesome! We started one day apart so I'm totally going to make this a competition to see who can go the longest before missing a day whether you like it or not! :P
Uh oh, did you miss a day?
So I'm trying to start to program my own 808s and other basses in NI Massive, but I can't seem to get it right at all. I've been messing with the synth and some plugins for days now and I cant get the sound I want from my bass at all. It either sounds too dull, muffled, or too high-end heavy and bright. I've tried all combinations of sine/square/tri/etc waves with no success. How can I make my bass thump, but be clear and wide? Here is a clip of the song with bass in it: http://clyp.it/pqrwjuot [IMG_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/s6u30PN.png[/IMG_thumb] [IMG_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/24nS1hj.png[/IMG_thumb] It refuses to sound full and wide in the mix without sounding too loud, distorted, or drowning out the other instruments. Which I have my bass sidechained using peak limiter and fruity compressor. If there is a better way to sidechain as well, please let me know. Thank you.

I like this. Very chillwave. It reminded me a little of Small Black's "No Stranger" at first. The overall mix sounds a little quiet. Which I understand goes with the feel of the song, but it could be a little louder. The bass especially. A nice low synth w/ some sub could really bring out the warmth in the track.

The keys and the drums go together quite well in this. Like most beginning rappers, you don't quite have the voice, but keep working on it! It gets a little difficult to hear you through the instrumental at times and the monotone doesn't help. If you're gonna go for an Earl type sound, go for newer earl because monotone Earl got boring. :v:
Uh oh, did you miss a day?
Nope! Was just having troubles uploading yesterday (typical soundcloud haha) [editline]27th February 2015[/editline]
So I'm trying to start to program my own 808s and other basses in NI Massive, but I can't seem to get it right at all. "Wide" is not something your subs should be though. Stereo image on sub bass will cause all kinds of phasing issues. Keep subs mono unless you REALLY know what you're doing

Turn the voicing to monophonic, the envelope of the oscillator should have a bit of decay and not full sustain and then make the pitch env on that oscillator a short attack, no sustain and short decay. At least that's how I'd do it but I don't really ever use that kind of bass. ____________________________________________________________ update on warm track.
update on warm track.
Maybe you should tone down the thingy that starts playing at around 0:48. In comparison to the rest of the track, it's a wee bit too loud.

The whole thing is very chill, but the tight kick rhythm help to keep it pushing forward. Very nice! No suggestions really. Started a new neurofunk song: Just a draft at the mo!

Track keeps getting better. I still believe its lacking a low end a little, though. Here's a track I started and finished in a few hours today while playing with new samples.

I'm not sure where he got his but mine came off of one of my random vinyls. Thats a cool song btw, never heard it before.
Finished building a lap steel a month ago and this is my first recording with it, just jamming over sounds I'm experimenting with. It's also my first recording using Reaper.
God that was really great to listen to. The flanger you got going makes me think of psychedelic rock and Kevin Parker. Do you usually sit on a track for a while and then release it after you're comfortable with it?
update on warm track.
Wow it evolved into a trance song haha. I really like it, and I can see how you channeled cubicolor in this, but listening to cubicolor it seems like his ambient sounds are a bit lower pitch. Also, where do you guys get your vocal samples? Do you just grab them off of vinyls? ____________________________ I guess this is my track: I don't really have a large background in music, and I've only started *trying* to make music this year. Probably why my critique isn't so good since everyone's songs sound good to me haha. I've been listening to a lot of XXYYXX, Giraffage, and Spazzkid lately so I was kinda aiming for that "dreampop" sound. Please be gentle :-(

Pretty good start. To get more of the sound I believe you're going for try adding in some interesting percussion panned to the side. People like giraffage use pretty unique samples including "poppy" and "jangly" percussion instruments of all sorts. A good place to find some for free is here: http://trisamples.com/

Do you usually sit on a track for a while and then release it after you're comfortable with it?
You're spot on on the Kevin Parker comment. Changing the order of effects really can have a dramatic effect on the sounds you get. It depends. Sometimes I can get sounds to work together really well and render the thing and send it off as soon as it's done. Other times, I'm tweaking things to no end. [editline]2nd March 2015[/editline]

That's quite good for just starting out. The main synth is a little bit too harsh, but other wise it's good.
My tracks on soundcloud keep getting a couple favorites from random accounts that looks a lot like bots. Does this happen to anyone else?

A few of the synths in the drop feel a bit out of place to me, but perhaps that's a subtlety of the genre I don't quite understand! Sounds fantastic in general though. My only other comment is that the vocals are a bit loud, especially before the drop. Done more work on this new neurofunk, quite liking where it's going! I like that melody played by the second synth that comes in too. Only thing I don't really like is the drums, they just sound a little boring compared to the rest of the song, in my opinion. Either way, it's not really a big deal though, it just stuck out to me. Your bass sounds are real nice though, especially with those choppy parts around the ends of bars.

Hey guys. This thread, IRL friends and general interest for sound editing and music inspired me to create my own, too. I want to make electronic music like progressive house and dubstep, but I'm not sure where to start. Can someone here point me in the right direction? Also, at the part starting in 0:38, you should add some sort of background track aswell, or else the song feels a bit shallow for what you're trying to do.
That's fuckin' awesome, very eerie.
Thanks! I appreciate it. The eery comment got me thinking, I've uploaded a newer version which is even eerier. I'm really happy with how this track is progressing!
Great blend of electro and metal. That is a tasty main lick going on there. I see that it is just an early demo but personally on the finished product, I would mix the heavy guitar more up to the front. ____________ Finished building a lap steel a month ago and this is my first recording with it, just jamming over sounds I'm experimenting with. Really atmospheric, while listening this through I was working in UE4 and I feel like this song would do well as like an open world backdrop song, or like for a trailer for a game showcasing big open spaces. If that makes any sense haha. I wish I could improv stuff this well. Also That made me laugh really hard. This is a new track I just started on a couple hours ago. Still needs vox, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can add or change? Also remember the bass guitar is a midrange instrument so boost the mid rather than the low ends. Also the kick drum needs some more midrange in it and a cut in the really low frequencies. Sounds kinda muddy. During the second part you should lower the volume of the drums a tad since they kinda smother the rest of the tracks. Maybe try to cut some of the frequencies that the other instruments "live" in. Cutting rather than boosting can be more effective. Also the lead guitar really needs more midrange lower those highs they sound really amateur. Anything sound "Off" about theese breaks i did today? Anything that needs fixing soundwise? I've recently started an EP I'm calling 'Vibing'. It's gonna be a mixture of dance music genre's! Pretty happy with the tracks I have already! The general idea is to create an EP/Album featuring local musicians from around my home town. The majority are singers & guitarists but I'm planning to do a DnB/Dubstep track with a live drummer. Half these tracks will have their own vocals once I get recording! Been writing a short piano/string piece to take a break from the neurofunk track, nothing particularly special but I might continue it:
