Sorry dude. I was on another thread about an album and was told to post here - I didn't read the first post and I should have. I don't have any headphones right now, but will listen to the other stuff on this thread tomorrow with my new shiney ones. Sorry again. :(
Sounds pretty cool in general, however there's a few technical things I'd personally do different. The guitar being exclusively left for the first fifty seconds isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does feel like there's a "gap" for that duration and it's kinda distracting. You could pan one of the drum elements to the right (or put something entirely new there) to mitigate that effect a bit. I would also not crank the pans all too extreme, having a little bit more overlap could make the separation of the guitars sound some more natural (and would also help with the intro).
I also think the guitars being generally louder and sharper in the mix would be cool as hell too.

Here's a track of MrJazzy, that he allowed me to mess with and try to improve it a bit. Would love some feedback on the mixing side of things:

I'd like to hear it too, it's very cool to hear another persons mix on something I put together!
Here's the one I made for reference.
Thought I would post some of my stuff here to see what people think. I will try and show a diverse range of stuff.
I hope people don't think they are too bad. I have written much better stuff recently, but have not been able to record. :c
Man it's so good to see you posting again, I've heard these before and I love them just as much now as I did back then, your compositions are great and you should do more if you can!

Holy shit! It's you! This is crazy. :) I remember our Company of Heroes days. I love your stuff generally, so I am going to check yours out as soon as I can tomorrow. I only have my crappy phone speaker right now, so the levels are all shitty and not appropriate for forming critique.
We should definitely catch up soon. :)
Edit: I have about 5 new songs with words done and about 4 instrumental pieces. The issue is that I don't have a real piano in my flat and I can't record the digital piano without it sounding terrible. I could use MIDI, but the dynamics always sound bad when I try that.
If we add each other on Facebook, or something, I can show you some stuff that is recorded in bad quality to give you an idea, and I will check your posts in this thread to check out your stuff. :)

Ah don't worry, I haven't really gotten anywhere music wise. And yeah we should, I'm still on steam so hit me up at some point if you'd like.

This is funky! I think it could use a little more going on - I love the hi hats that come in and out periodically, but when they're not there it's feeling a little empty.
The main synth that's played in is nice, but could use a little more quantization - and maybe a little less in the lower frequencies to brighten it up/cut some mud? I like it, though!
Been a long long time since I posted anything, but check this out:

Damn, this is loud. Bass slaps and is really well mastered. I'd say that its just a liiiiiiiiiiiiittleee to loud but I get that's the style. Awesome track though man!
Was inspired to continue my two year old album after the comments I got from the compilation, here's a track I'm going to slot into that album and release as a full release sometime in the next few weeks.

I really like your use of space here. The drums(beatbox? lol) also feel super tight. It does get a little repetitive with the same drum pattern throughout, but the constant use of space makes it feel varied in a unique way. Well done!
I've got some emo shit I just made today, and it being my fourth ever song, I think I've finally figured out how to make a track that doesn't sound terrible per say. Lemme know what mistakes I made <3

Hahha, I'm glad you recognized the drums. They are in fact beatboxes through a bunch of filters because I really liked that kinda punch snare.
As for your track, I love it! The pianos over the drum machine elements make for an interesting effect. I think bringing out that pad you have in the back and making it a higher octave would clean the mix a bunch. Other than though, fantastic stuff.
I really don't know much about music except how to play a bit of guitar so any advice is appreciated.
Back in 2006 I was exactly in the same situation as you. I just played guitar and wanted to start building my home studio. It is not as complex as you'd think. Basically the most simple setup is something like:
- good desktop or laptop with preferably SSD drives and enough memory (32gigs would be great)
- decent audio interface, USB3 or Firewire with enough ports for your needs and good ASIO drivers
- midi keyboard, either via USB or MIDI to your audio interface
- DAW - the actual program with which you record audio tracks, midi tracks, inject the sample libraries and VSTs into and export / bounce the final stereo mixes of your projects. Options are wide, ranging from Cubase to FL Studio to Reaper and whatever
- sample libraries - depending on what kind of genres your interested in you either have to spend quite a bit of money or not that much. Electronic tends to be easier, orchestral soundtrack stuff the most expensive
- hardware is completely optional, you can basically use just virtual sample libraries for everything
Then it's only a matter of creating the stuff. You map your midi channels in your DAW to the virtual instruments and record the notes with midi keyboard. The DAW will drive those midi notes through the libraries and mix it all down to the final stereo output.
This actually sounds pretty damn good. It almost reminds me of U2 in a way. That could be a good chrous with the pads and voice in everything. I can already hear melodies with that.
Here's a thing, I improv'd the rhythm guitar over the drum track just to have fun. The guitar solo was improv'd in one take. It's mostly in G minor, although I go atonal for a bit.
https://soundcloud.com/blazing234/guitar-stuff
This is good, man. I will offer some constructive criticism though, as that's what this is all about! I will mention both the positive and negative (although subjective) impression I get of the piece.
1. I love the rhythm on the percussion in combination with the guitar. It feels a lot like Command and Conquer music (in a good way) and specifically reminds me of Hell March. However, it would be great if you could put some fills in every 4 bars, especially near the end when the droning sound comes on, which leads me to...
2. I adored the new guitar bit at the end, with what I believe is a pedal effect? It creates much needed evolution of the piece and climaxes well. You even had me dancing a bit near the end.
3. Personally, if a piece is longer than 1:45, it is nice to have a new chord in there somewhere. To keep it simple, you could convert the last major chord in alternate phrases to their relative minor counterpart, for example, what I believe, if my ear is not failing me, to be a C major, you could put in an A minor instead sometimes, or even better - an Am7.
4. Finally, I love dissonance and the counterpoint in the middle section really appealed to me.
Overall, it is good, mate.
Once again, sorry for posting my stuff without adding feedback. I feel like a dick, but I honestly just didn't think about how that can be construed as rude. I blame Asperger's!
I imagine my music won't be much appreciated, because it is mostly inspired by people like Chopin, Debussy, Ludovico Einaudi and Phillip Glass. Still, I would appreciate any feedback from people- I have 6 new things that I am comfortable sharing, if people don't mind the other stuff.

Hey Jazzy. Your piece perfectly illustrates point 3 in my last post. You basically switched to a new chord progression at exactly the right time.
I love the bass drum effect you have there... It had me tapping my feet subconsciously. It is intriguing that you wrote that, as I always remembered you writing quite bluesy stuff before. I did hear the pentatonic scale in there (or jazz scale - I forgot the name) a bit, so your blues/jazz roots are still present in a pleasant way.
My only suggestion would be some more counterpoint, especially at around the 1 minute mark. Still, it is your piece, not mine, and I have always appreciated your composition skills - you have a level of professionalism, betraying your pure ability. Keep it up! I am keen to hear more stuff if you post it.

Okay... I will be honest, I struggled a bit with this one. If it is only your fourth song, this is totally normal. I think honestly is important here. I will let you know what I think worked - and what did not.
1. I really like the guitar riff. It is pretty and not just straight triad chords, a mistake many composers make early on (in that they use no 9ths, 7ths and sus2/4s.
2. I think part of what lets this piece down is the quality of the samples, something out of your control, but I do think that the chords that come in on the synth early on *really* clash with the guitar in terms of tone and texture.
3. Once again, as I have mentioned to others: some different chord progressions, even with the same melody, can go a long way to keeping listeners engaged.
Still, it is not terrible as you were worried about - not at all. When you compose a lot, you get better; simple! :)

I would appreciate it if people listened to the ones in my last post first, but here is something recent I wrote for a girl I like. Please stick around until the end, because I think the last minute is quite pretty. I make a fair few mistakes - I was rushing to get her the file, heh.
Anyone here write lyrics or poetry or anything? I'd love to try to make music out of someones texts. I've been struggling for years to make songs with lyrics, written so many drafts and made so many projects but I'm not a lyrical guy, so I guess I'll throw the idea out here, if anybody has some lines they'd feel like sharing with me, hit me up, I'd appreciate it a ton! No particular subject or theme, just anything with a bit of rhythm to it.
I have written quite a few lyrics. Here is a poem I wrote that same girl. She was sexually assaulted by a prolific YouTuber, and I wrote a poem about it because I was bored. I was not flirting or anything- that would have been inappropriate, but I guess it turned out relatively okay. Her name is Pieke.
Pieking at roses,
glimpsing the light;
all is lost,
but not if I fight.
Try as I may,
I like to take flight,
Floating away;
Out of sight.
Exurb1an errant ways,
Don't believe anything he says,
Blown like a light bulb;
Leaving me dazed.
I go to the police,
I want him to cease;
Destroying my home;
Destroying my peace.
I battle through the weeds;
Remove the awful seeds;
I want to move on,
Attend to my needs.
I cope with my schism,
with surprising grace;
Exurb1an demons,
He's going to prison.
Here is a song I wrote called Old Man. I have a recording of me playing and singing this one. In fact, it is probably the best song I have written, but I am kinda embarrassed about my singing and am also keen not to exhaust my music too quickly - people are more likely to give feedback on one song at a time than five.
I bemoan,
Courtesy,
Laid back answers,
Made for me
There's a trust,
Broken down,
I desire your honesty.
Dis-a-pear,
For I'm an old man in need of some clarity,
Sick of here,
It's a world devoid of all humanity
It's quite clear,
Night and day,
Your opinions
Come my way
There's a person in the world,
Who'd see me for who I am
Soon my dear,
The brush and the ivy will close in
Stuck in fear,
Paralysed below and cut through here
Wake up now,
Do it quick,
Life awaits,
And you are sick
Tired of life,
And your plight
Creatures mourning
For youth lost
There's a person in the world,
There's some things that they'd be told
[Middle 8]
You're lonely
Keep busy
Don't concede
Your own needs
It's all here,
There's no time to stop what I'm doing
Creeping here
For I'm only lying here a while
I hope that is helpful, although lyrics probably aren't my strong suit!

Really nice! Only detail that comes to my mind is that every once in a while the sidechain compression becomes a tad bit too forceful and sudden. But otherwise it sounds really clean and well engineered!

Here is one of my latest works. Currently I mainly try to create modern hybrid orchestral soundtrack material in spirit of Two Steps From Hell and similar artists. Mixing is something I still suck at, but otherwise the sound is "getting there".

I LOVE those choral samples - they are surprisingly realistic! This gives me strong Guild Wars 1 vibes, a very good thing, in my opinion.
I am really quite impressed, friend. I think we shall get on, being that we both write music in the style of a soundtrack.
Are you able to post more? My stuff tends to be piano-centric because I don't have enough patience for software and prefer to improvise a lot on each recording to give each rendition more of spontaneous vibe. :)
I would be interested to know what you think of a few of mine on the last page, but no pressure. Still, I would very much like to hear more of your work.
Thank you! Glad to hear you liked it! Regarding choral samples - yes they have definitely become more and more realistic in the past years. I personally love especially 8Dio. They really know how to make good sampled choirs.
I took a listen to your soundcloud links and left a few comments on the soundcloud! Really nice work! We definitely have similar taste when it comes to music and composition. I have quite a lot of material on my youtube / soundcloud but I don't want to spam the thread too much :) If you want, you can check out for example my post regarding my new Dota 2 music pack release
When it comes to composing - I am actually also really improvisational guy even when I use lots of libraries. After setting up the instrumentation channels, I tend to just push record and play everything on the fly and just tweak the notes slightly afterwards. My skills of composing just on pen & paper is horrible. I have mainly played guitar and focused on jazz / fusion and blocking solos / tunes with ear, so it has become sort of my way to go as a composition technique as well. Usually I have no idea what I'm going to play before I push rec and then it just goes from there.

I am also terrible at reading music! When I learnt classical stuff about 9 years ago, I would just use sheet music as a guide if my ear couldn't pick stuff up, but it was normally close enough, assuming it isn't a Chopin ballade or something.
I should check out the sample pack you use then. Would that be compatible with Logic, or do you use something else?
Thanks for writing comments - I didn't notice. :) I will have a listen to your Soundcloud in a bit too. Most of my Soundcloud stuff is super rough, but that's okay, heh.
I use Cubase but nowadays any sample libraries should be compatible with any modern DAWs. Most of my libraries and Native Instruments Kontakt based, so one good way to go about it would be to get the Native Instruments Komplete (basic set, not ultimate) when it's on discount and purchase 1-2 good orchestral library sets for Kontakt. I would pick either Albion 1 from Spitfire or Metropolis Ark 1. For example that tune I posted is mainly Albion 1 with some 8Dio choirs.
anyone here ever bought/played a Harley Benton? was considering buying a bass vi clone off them since it's a fraction of the price of a squier even with shipping all the way to nz.

I thoroughly enjoyed Simon's Cruise. I love the piano at the end. I think it would be better if a few progressive layers built on that piano though. Perhaps a second piano, some percussion and strings? I love it already, but I think that piano riff is well suited to a build up. :)

Yeah the drums def needs some variation. You were close, the whole piece is in G minor and is mostly in Aeolian. I think switching to the Lydian mode or the Dorian mode would probably create some newness. For the guitar effect were you referring to guitar when the drums cut out at the end?
Your piece was pretty sick man, you've got a good framework I think. There were some bluesy parts too in it I thought were cool.

I know it is in G minor, lol. I was saying that it goes Gm, F, C, and that mixing it up with a Gm, F and Am sometimes would be pretty cool. :) That's the correct chord progression, right? I haven't tried playing it, so I could be wrong. :o
Thanks for the feedback on mine. It is a kinda classical, blues, neoclassical combination overall, yeah.

that sounds really interesting. I sensed some dissonance around the third chord in the progression although I think it's on purpose, because the overall track sounded "sad" IMO.
here's a track I was working on and off over a few days. I don't think the quality lives up to a track that was worked on for a few days but whatever.

It's a Cmaj7, with the first chord being a C#minor7/9 and it being in the key of E overall. The dissonance was not a mistake, heh. I find it haunting and sad, yeah. Most of my music is sad, although the last thing I posted in post #3849, just above, is quite cheerful.
I really love that snippet you have posted. It kinda gives me a vibe of when hallucinogens are wearing off, like LSD or shrooms, and you're with your mates, in this sorta dream state.
You absolutely must do more with that - I would give it a 9/10 as s premise for a song, and I am not easily impressed.
Here is something of me improvising and singing. The first 2 minutes are instrumental, although I plan to put vocals there later too. I am not much of a singer, and I have a cold, so the final minute sucks.
The basis for it was that instrumental one I posted last, although I made this more complex. Link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/f1ipngdsf7bkl2v/Test.m4a?dl=0
10 downloads and around 600 plays so far on the collab album, not bad! As one might imagine, first track gets most listens and then the longer into the album the less plays you get, but the top 4 has a quite even distribution of plays as well as the rest of the bottom tracks.

Damn this is actually really nice, reminds me a bit of Burial and Aphilas, a bit of Nujabes there as well <3 Would love to hear more this kind of stuff! Chill and alternative in just the right way!
Here is one of my latest works. I wanted to go for this kind of soft build up kind of epicness:

The name of this track feels very appropriate. I imagine some long journey taking place on an American interstate road at the beginning of a post-apolcalyptic film, heh. Perhaps a convoy and some trucks.
The percussion is really great too. Drums are not my strong suit, so I am always impressed when others do it well. It would be cool to make a new section, for which I have an idea, in fact. I will post the chords and a recording in a minute when I have checked if it works.

Okay, here is the recording of my idea for what could happen at the end. I have it changing key as soon as yours stops, and it won't work unless it breathes for a second of silence, IMO. I was keen to change the key, although feel free to transpose it back to A minor if you want.
