It really sucks how nobody will go to the last page to critique something. I Just wound up giving the dude the original mix of this song.
I'm not very familiar with this style but if had to critique it I would bring the volume of the melody synth up some, its kind of drowned out, but again can't really say I know this kind of music.

Thank you! Yea the "melody" is nothing really its the beats.
I enjoyed the beat, would recommend a less cliche synth sound. Good job though.
I made this just now.

Which synth in particular sounds cliche? Just curious as to avoid doing that in the future.
Anyways hello everyone! I'm new here to facepunch and I'm also the brother of Rich209. I'm a student at Clemson University studying audio. My brother recommended me to check out this thread so here are two songs I have done in my free time.

Those are awesome man, and welcome to the thread.
Here is something dancy I made recently, first time messing with a vocoder.

I don't know why but this reminded me of mass effect when you go to club. I can see it now, Commander Shepard doing that ridiculous dance! XD

Not familiar with this genre but I'm digging it. The change at 0:33 is a bit awkward in my opinion (and isn't really resolved), maybe make a bridge to make it more cohesive? You've inspired me to investigate this genre though.

New song by my band, looking for both mix and song advice.
Ahh the percussion is great, I love the layers that come in and it builds up wonderfully. The transients of the cajon are just so nice sounding, love it.
The guitar part is a little sloppy in places, though. Not sure it fits with the percussion either.
Working more on my neurofunk track:
Thanks man! I can't make music anymore without having my percussion instruments in my songs so it's so sweet to hear that they work out well for the song :) And yeah the cajon, I love it! The only downside to it is that it doesn't have a particulary good snap when you hit the edge, it has a wonderful booming tone to when you slap the centre though so I can't really complain.
I can sort of agree on you on the guitars, they would probably fit better with an actual drumkit and maybe a singer wailing. They are a bit sloppy too I agree, I tried to re-record them a couple of times but I could never get the groove going so I think I might keep them this way.
Thanks for the swell critique!
I love the percussion in your track as well, the panning is excellent and gets you in a pretty psychadelic mood! Where's the sample from? That buildup is pure sex, the toms rolling in are slick as hell and the kick got such an awesome amount of punch.
Are you planning on adding anything else to this track? I could definietly hear something for the higher ranges, maybe a completely distorted guitar?
[editline]23rd March 2015[/editline]
As previously stated this has some amazing percussion going on.
Furthermore the combination of it with the various guitar tones including the dull muted/modulated/acoustic sounds like a combination of the HL2:EP2 and Black Mesa Source soundtrack.
I love it man.
I've been watching The Amazing World of Gumball recently and heard this track in the background in the episode called The Void.
Sounded really awesome with that space/out of this world vibe going on so I've spent the last couple of hours figuring it out by ear and redoing it.
Here's the reference episode clip, it starts playing at 0:45

Thanks bud! I keep going back to the comments you guys posted and just sitting smiling like a lunatic, those kind words really means a lot coming from such skilled musicians as yourselves :)
I really dig your version, what samples and stuff are you using? Because the strings sound beautiful, and so do the xylophone.

Im really loving the shakers and drum samples they sound crystal fucking clear thats awesome!
Haha cheers man, that's the wonder of recording them with an mxl990 and highpassing the shit out of it (or well, the drum samples are 'only' highpassed at 100hz, the shaker and tambourine is probably at around 4khz or something :v: )
I'm loving your work, to me making glitch music is sort of like magic because I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it, so hearing someone producing that sort of stuff is such a treat.
It has a very nice flow to it all, I think the only thing I can't say I like is the ending starting at 1minut30second mark. The rest? Great stuff mate :)
I added some more stuff, mixed a few things differently and most importantly, added a low fucking bass at the most intense parts.

So if I have no experience using music-making programs and shit but I have a keyboard and I want to get into making music, what should I use? I've heard good things about FL Studio but I want a "yeah use this" from people who I'd generally assume know which programs are more user-friendly for people not used to them.

You should get hands on with something very mainstream with tons of tutorials. For that reason, I'd recommend FL studio just for starting out, and then moving to Reaper, which is extremely barebones and matches your workflow the way you want it.
I'm stressed for a test, so I'm working on music:

FL Studio is very user friendly and there are hundreds of tutorials on how to use it to make various things on youtube so I would say go with FL studio, it's also very good if you're the kind of person who likes to literally build your tracks before your eyes since the workflow of FL studio works like you do small segments and then put them together to make a song.
What sort of music are you interested in making once you've got the hang of it? :)

You can pretty much do all the same shit on any DAW, so it doesn't really matter which you choose in the long run. People will probably tell you FL is shit and all that, but the difference between it and most other DAW's is its layout; it's a little easier to figure out on your own, but it has a bad reputation among a lot of experienced producers because of pseudo-producers using it without knowing what they're doing. Regardless, it's very common for artists to start out on FL, and switch to other shit later, after learning about music production in general - so either way, you could always ditch it for something else if you grow tired of it.
If you choose not to start with FL, just make sure you stick to one of the other popular programs though, because the obscure ones may either be trash, or harder to find tutorials and resources for. Ableton, Reason, Logic, Pro Tools, Cubase, Reaper (and probably some other shit I can think of off the top of my head) - all that shit is capable of doing what you'd need it to.
I use renoise and thats all binary text entry and sequencing. No fancy gradient shit for me all I need is

If Renoise had Jeskola Buzz' pattern sequencer, machine editor, and keyboard shortcuts, I'd switch.
Jeez, I haven't been on here since all the forums got cleaned up.
Here's a new track from me. Some atmospheric trap for you all.

Ah man this is my style right here. Smooth, mellow, but heavy in bass.
Been tryin to fiddle around with changing the bass notes like you have done, although yours is MUCH cleaner than this.

The keyboard shorcuts are amazing I never use my mouse. Also what about this buzz tracker that renoise doesnt have?
I think it needs to be put it in the thread title.
it was in the title of the previous thread
surprisingly it seemed to have had an opposite effect, though, since now the grand majority of people give feedback, while back then people had to be reminded constantly and even then just ignored it most of the time
It made sense when it was solely a place to post WIPs. Now its a whole thread so

I'll record a video explaining what I mean when I get the chance.
Can anyone help me out. I need to get some links to vaporwave ambiance. I'm working on a soundtrack for a short film and my director mentioned that he's looking for some retro ambiance for me to create.

For those interested, Pro Tools 12 just came out.
If you're a student with an .edu address you may be able to get it for only $10 a month. If not, it's $30 a month or $300 for students $900 for the full thing.
If you've got some spare change for the $10-$30 a month I recommend grabbing it, especially if you're still using something like fl.
i will never succumb to your oppression
That moment when ableton is freaking out more than your outdated studiovision sessions.
