iirc fl is only good if you make music with lots of repetition because of the way its used
I'd say most music is functionally repetitious. As long as you know automation and stuff, I don't think FL promotes repetition any more than another DAW
iirc fl is only good if you make music with lots of repetition because of the way its used
When have you last used FL? The old pattern based system it had might have promoted repeativeness somewhat but how the sequencer works now I don't think it does that
Why not? It's a perfectly good DAW and it just keeps getting better and better. Well except for the rendering problems I get with some NI plugins but I'm not sure if they're still present in FL 12 beta

And those are quickly fixed by bouncing stuff to .wav so it's not a big problem
For me its because if you learn a daw like logic or pro tools you learn all daws whereas if you learn FL you just...learn FL
For me its because if you learn a daw like logic or pro tools you learn all daws whereas if you learn FL you just...learn FL
When you put it like that you make it sound like every other daw is just each other slightly modified while FL tries to do something unique.
I get your point but tbh why would you need to use another daw? Unless you're collaborating with someone who uses another daw in a studio, but even then the other person can show you where to find the obvious stuff and assuming you're not a total noob to producing you will get the hang of it quickly.

havent used it in years, i meant the pattern system but forgot what it's called
I guess what I'm trying to say is that use whatever DAW makes you feel at home. For me it is FL

Agreed. It really doesn't matter at the end of the day, they're all fundamentally the same with some different features at a higher level.
Speaking of fl studio, what do you guys use to make music? I got stuck on using FL studio and plan not to save for another program. I've used fl studio way too long, that I'm afraid of change.

Guitar Pro, though recently I've been recording more with real instruments
So wait is the "Creative Music in Progress" thread also getting added into the music general discussion thread? If so I like this idea, condenses things.

Ableton Live - if you make electronic stuff it is the best daw for you. Moved from logic to ableton around two years ago and haven't looked back, it's so intuitive and powerful. You should try it out.
also a track (first one of the thread??):

This is rad but at the same time I feel like it needs a little variety! Almost reminds me of a track of Death Grips' Government Plates in a way.
love that modulating synth playing all the weird chords. Regarding Teacup's comment, I personally think there's enough bass. I'm using Sennheiser HD 598s. Also, this is easily one of your more accessible songs, which is interesting. I would like to hear more of this style in later works!

So, I posted this in the last thread, but it didn't really get much notice. Could I get some feedback on this?

I agree with redBadger, maybe bring the vocals out a bit more and play around with the piano? As a standalone piece it's a little iffy- maybe if the same piano style was used in a previous track effectively, and this followed it, it would make more sense!
Here's something i'm still cleaning up, gotta make the intro flow nicer and redo some stuff in mastering, as well as track down some abrupt slightly off-beat things that are bugging me.

Because when you say you work on FL to entire group of tech majors they'll laugh and make fun of you.
FL is frowned upon for being a kiddie daw that tweens use. I personally don't recommend it because you can get a much better daw anywhere. This is just my opinion, so don't take my work for it
For electronic music though I see people use maschine more often than FL

fuck them then lmao, I just wanna make tracks, not impress some snobs
I actually use FL studios for my orchestral works, but I'm saving up for Pro Tools as I know there is a lot more I can do with it. Plus automation isn't very good in FL studios/ its not easy to do, or I just don't know how to in FL studios.

Pro Tools is the bomb.
Just be sure you know the difference between Native, HD, and HD Native Systems.

I second this. I started out with FL, but switched to Ableton. I love everything about it. It's somehow full of features without looking cluttered/overwhelming. At least that's the impression I have of Ableton compared to Cubase, Reason or FL (also not saying those are bad DAW's, I just personally prefer Ableton )
Anyone that tries to tell you one DAW is objectively better than another is an idiot and you should ignore them. You can produce the same tunes in any DAW. All you are changing is your workflow. I use Ableton right now but I started with FL and have also produced in Cubase and Logic for extended periods of time. They are all very powerful and capable pieces of software and I'd be happy writing music in any of them.

Go read up then because automation is one of FL's strengths.

Waiting for this to show up on my doorstep today. Sooooo stoked :)
Oh man I was drooling over that one a bit ago, sounds so good
I've been forcing myself to wait to buy it for like 3 months now and finally buckled after 3 days of it sitting in my shopping cart and me longingly hovering my mouse over the checkout button haha
Fuck yeah just rearranged everything things my push can sit right in front of me too. This sounds hilarious but it's crazy how much of a workflow killer it can be to constantly move your chair 2-3 feet back and forth to go between the push and sound design so I'm really stoked about this :)

What synth is that? It looks boss.
I'm using an APC 40 with ableton kinda wish I'd saved up more for the push though
Synth on the left is a Virus TI 2 Desktop and the one on the right is a Moog Sub 37 (both fucking awesome synths). I think the Moog is my favorite thing I've got so far.
Hey guys, I've recently started jamming with my friends and while I know the basics of drumming I know there is a ton more for me to learn, are there any excellent free online resources for technique/practice/beats that you guys know of?

I recommend finding someone to take lessons with over anything else, if that option is available.

As you said, it does need a bit of cleanup, the bass is a bit loud IMO, makes the track sound a bit muddy. I think you could emphasize the vocals more by moving them higher up in the mix, and the fade in you put on the vocals in the beginning is a bit fast, or so it seems to me at least. Maybe extend the fade-in a bit more to make the vocals slide in in a nicer way. Apart from that I don't have anything else to say, the track is chill as fuck! great work :)
A new thing I'm working on (should I add vocals? y/n?)

It is possible, unfortunately with my schedule being more than a little tumultuous it's difficult.

Play along with music you want to be able to play and play it perfectly. You don't have to play entire pieces even, just parts will teach you new things.
It's the most elementary exercise there is I think, and yet it's so effective (and difficult).
Here's a little sample from the big sky if anyone's curious how it sounds: https://soundcloud.com/sonis/omgverb/s-pBjOL
This is just a single saw osc with a bit of a lowpass envelope going in to the reverb box.
