Reposting my question from the previous page (again apologies if this is a faux pas)
I'd totally give an answer but I don't have Ableton. In terms of general theory, I've just gone by by googling stuff like what distortion and compression is. Understanding how waveforms are affected by effects and mixing is pretty helpful.
Reposting my question from the previous page (again apologies if this is a faux pas)
Ableton is good to learn off youtube in stuff - its a fairly difficult DAW to master but from what I understand the rewards are high. As for general theory, i find this to be the most helpful: http://tweakheadz.com/ Unfortunately the guy who made this website died in 2010 - a great loss. Everything you need to know about audio engineering is here.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/pF5nsVS.jpg[/t] Anyone have experience using the S6? My studio just got one of them working a few weeks ago and I've finally got a chance to try it out. I LOVE mixing on this thing. Everything feels so intimate. I hit that touch/latch automation and go ham on a mix. Plus the track attenuation window on the right hand side there is so helpful! I can easily adjust my EQ and compression on the fly or even automate that from time to time. If anyone's curious about the setup - L/R Genelec monitors, MacPro 1TB SSD, Intel Xeon 8 core 3.5ghz, 64 gig ram, Pro Tools | HD. Haven't had a chance to play with the preamps but I'm really looking forward to playing with them.
wooooow that thing looks like a lot of fun man. i would love to get a job working with gear like that, even if it's just so i have access to a bunch of cool stuff for my own music :v: but to answer your question i've got no experience with an S6 and I have no knowledge to pass on haha

Welcome! To the Facepunch Collaborative Part 12! Another album, and another opportunity to showcase your BEST music to everyone! Everyone is invited, the only thing you have to do is make a track YOU are proud of. There are a few rules: 1) You must be proud of the track, none of this "oh I don't know if this is good enough boohoo" crap, you're a musician, be proud of your craft. 2) You must be OK with any profits from this album to go to charity. 3) Hav fun! 4) All tracks must be mastered so that they're at -0,1db, if you don't know how to do this just send me the track and I'll just put a limiter on it. This is to ensure that every track has the same volume. 5) You must own all rights to whatever samples or stuff you use, we don't want to get any nasty lawsuits on our hands. 6) It is expected of you to give some feedback on all the tracks IF you have a track on this album, so have that in mind. The deadline will be on the 30th of may , we need a cover for the album as well so anyone who would be inclined to one would be totally awesome. If I have missed anything or you don't agree with a rule or deadline, please tell me so. I think the old ones used to have a rule about only new tracks, but I think you can put in old tracks too if you're proud of them. What do you guys think?
you're forgetting the feedback rule also, not that it actually matters, but it used to be -3,0db
I don't recall a lot of people abiding by that rule so I figure it's a rule not worth mentioning, those who will give feedback will do that and those who wont bother, won't.
I'll try and give this a go, hopefully will be the kick up the ass I need

Then I stand corrected and I'll add the rule :)
Rule or no rule, I'll be sure to partake with both music and C&C.
yeah i'll try to write something for the album, it'll be a good chance to do something non-ambient again

And is it a filter you're using near the beginning? Because the synth sounds really nice from 0:20 to 0:24, almost like some sort of wind instrument. Do you have any plans for this track right now? Some elements are really sweet and some... not so much, you know? I can't let this one go, this is the third time I've done changes to the melodies and stuff and I think I'm getting closer to how I want it to sound. BUT! I want strings and shit on it, but the samples I currently use (DSK overture) sounds like utter garbage :<

There is some hefty filter Q (resonance) in the beginning, and attack, decay and release is modulated throughout. No further plans for it, it was never really intended to be released.

Ok holy shit is that stuff amazing, you could most likely build some orchestral stuff that could pass for the real deal if you fiddled with volume automation and layering. Thanks a million for the tip, this is exactly what I needed :) [editline]28th April 2015[/editline]
Love this atmospheric retro shit, it kills me.
This is just amazing. What are those percussive instruments in the beginning? Honestly, the only thing I could think of that could add to this song, would be some cute vocals on top on the already cute&happy instrumentalisation you've made. This is some Adventure Time-esque stuff and I want YOU to send this to them ASAP, because this would fit so well on that show. I've added some contra-melody stuff on top of the piano now, I might have to revisit the mixing tomorrow since I can't crank it up to full volume when it's halv 4 in the morning :v:
anybody here have some good low end theory samples? i'm looking for some good drum samples, such as ones found in tracks from giraffage, xxyyxx, flume, etc. etc.
holy shit this is great [editline]27th April 2015[/editline] I have to arrange this for orchestra
I can send you sheet music or a chord chart if you're having trouble figuring it out by ear. :v:

I actually think this could benefit from being a tiny bit slower in tempo, maybe give that a try. I feel like the main piano melody is a bit faster than it needs to be (if you plan to keep working on it of course). That lead synth at around 1:20 - How did you get that? Here's a demo I worked on this evening: Might need to turn it up a bit. The guitar parts are really rough too so mind that. Actually the whole thing is rough haha, I didn't pay much attention to mixin I guess A friend of mine and I are also recording an album and we've got some great stuff going. Really exciting to be able to work with someone with the same taste in music as you and all the same ideas, its really liberating

As for that instrument, it's an Ableton Square Lead that I tweaked the knobs on it until it sounded like what I wanted. I am super hands on, all the parts I play manually, often taking many takes to get right. I hate adding in notes in programs. Hopefully my Korg Wavedrum will come in soon so I can start adding more organic drum tracks with hardware. It has a nice vibe though this track, do you plan on adding vocals? I can definietly imagine some sort of distorted voice singing/screaming about suburban life being a bore or something like that. Some fills every now and then would be cool to, I suppose the drums are the way they are right now because of how little you've worked on it so far? :) I don't think the guitars are too raw or rough, in fact I really like it! I can also imagine how could it would be to have small solos at the end of each round of that guitar figure you have at 0:32ish. Here's what I'm currently working on
Looking for a good electric guitar to pick up. It will be my first electric after playing acoustic for years. I want a pretty good one without breaking the bank. Hows this: http://www.thomann.de/ie/fender_standard_telecaster_mn_lpb2011.htm I really like the look and color of it just need to know if it would be a good buy
I'd say it's probably a good buy, fender does solid stuff and that's a pretty fine guitar! Honestly, I'd say the most important thing is if it feels ok, have you had a chance to play a similar guitar? You're probably going to be stuck with it for a long time and even if it is possible to change a lot of things about it (like string height for instance) it could be that the neck is not good enough for you. As a buy, it is solid, the only question if it is a good fit for you. Try and find a similar guitar in a music store and play it a little bit, if it feels good then go for it! :)
My friend had a similar enough fender that I liked, so hopefully it will be okay. Need to find a decent amp for it though, any ideas? I'd like something decent like a Marshal or something without spending too much
Would this app be good? http://www.thomann.de/ie/fender_vaporizer_slate_blue.htm It's quite cheap. I know its not a marshall but it seems okay from videos I've heard
