I suppose it would be decent, I have this amp: http://www.thomann.de/ie/orange_crush_pix_35ldx.htm And I love it, can get a really nice crunchy overdrive from it and there are some decent effects on it as well.
I put this together really quick! http://soundcloud.com/yaad-mohammad/knock-knock Edit: Can't seem to get the media tags working...

Common decency, why would people bother listening and giving feedback to a track if you won't give them feedback? :)

It's a really good rule, I'll make sure I'll give feedback to the next person, for what my feedback is worth

I never heard of Orange being a good brand for guitars, I always hear them mentioned for bass though. Anybody have any other amps they can recommend to give me some choice? [editline]30th April 2015[/editline] Saw this one too: http://musicmaker.ie/digital-modelling-combos/23350-fender-mustang-iii-v2-885978317165.html Would that be good

I also adore your vocals, you should add more layers of it on top of what you've got now :) Only thing I would say doesn't sound too nice is that you might have a bit too much reverb on your vocals at the moment, and that you can hear the metronome. I'm not sure how to mix this track, or if the background strings work that well...

I recorded everything really quick, it was just a concept thing. I'm thinking of having metronome only in the beginning and then after one or two measures start playing the guitar! As for your track, I really like the composition. I feel though that the bass part of the piano is a bit... dunno static... and robotic. What plugin are you using for your piano? The strings definitely need to stay, they work really well, but maybe make them fade in and out everytime slowly? But anyway, like I said the composition is really good, love the piano!

Now this might be a little unfitting, but I could imagine adding some slow drums to it in addition to a stronger cello. Could add alot of power to it.

If it isn't too much to ask for, could you elaborate a little bit more with adding slow drums? It could definietly add a new cool dimension to the track for sure, I just don't know where to start heh :)
Ordered my first midi controller, now I just need to learn how to actually play piano! [t]http://6be54c364949b623a3c0-4409a68c214f3a9eeca8d0265e9266c0.r0.cf2.rackcdn.com/988/images/MPKmini_angle_web_lg.png[/t]

They should focus on Hi-Hats and Snares, staying somewhat in the background, without a loud base drum. Since your track isn't of loop-nature, the drums should always adapt to the piano, filling gaps between motives and enhance them, rather than giving a strict beat. From there on you could expand and add more instruments to give it an overall symphonic feel, might be a bit much for two minutes though :v:.
Hi guys, I wanna start making music for fun. The stuff I wanna make will include guitar but will mostly be electronic stuff. How worth my time is it to learn to read music notes properly? Will it benefit me to learn or do people consider it fine these days to just write your stuff in tabs?
Personally I don't write my music down at all and I can't read music either I guess it depends but I don't feel it's all that necessary However I've never been in a band or anything so I don't consider my opinion to count very much
Yeah I dont plan on being in a band, just myself. That makes me feel a bit better cause I learnt guitar when I was 10 but forgot how to read music properly; I couldn't stand it then and still can't!
it's good to know some things about the dots but you don't really need to be able to sight read properly if all you are doing is composing.
Alright guys awesome, final question Ill ask because basically everything else I need to know I can google easily: I have real guitars and drums are no issue, but I've heard "guitars are nothing without a bass" and vice versa. I have no bass guitar and no way of obtaining one (nor do I want to buy one) So what can I replace the bass with to compliment a real guitar? The kind of music I want to make is somewhat similar to Celldweller if that helps at all; thats the only band I can think of like that off the top of my head right now. Basically midi/sample stuff but also real guitar/drums and vocals. Ive heard Celldweller use a real bass at times though but Im unsure :( Sorry for complete novice questions haha Thanks in advance and thanks for actually having a really constructive and informative thread, been lurking for a while now and you guys are pretty much what pushed me over the fence on the topic of making my own stuff

Check out synths like the TAL bassline VST, or any emulation of Yamaha CS-01 or Yamaha CS-02. Looooads of synthesizers can do great bass lines. It's one of the most common uses of synths. - You can use the low E string on your guitar and with some clever EQing and amp modelling, make it sound a bit like a bass - You don't always need a bass. Really depends on the song, sometimes I just leave it out and increase the bass frequencies on an organ or something else to equal out the frequency spectrum
- You can use the low E string on your guitar and with some clever EQing and amp modelling, make it sound a bit like a bass
an octave down pedal also works for this

You can always compliment it with a synthesizer like killerteacup mentions, this way you'll get a more pure sound than from a guitar that's downpitched.
really great stuff here, very nice i'd love to hear it on a real piano, maybe also with a band this is just something i made late at night, after a party
I love the almost droneish character of the right-panned guitar, the use of automated panning on the other guitar is just solid as well! Not too sure about the guitar that clips and peaks though, it might be a bit too rough as it is right now. I think if you would add some sort of ambient synth (beyond the one you've got now) it could be a really cool ambient track, maybe some vocal choir singing aaaaahs with a LOT of reverb and drowned in the background? I really love the skeleton of this track, very nice mate! Thanks by the way, I don't think I'll ever find a band that could play this though (would probably need two pianists, and I would have to write what to play as well :v: Here it is with drums though, which I suppose is the closest to what it might sound like with a band? :)
So this is the second thing I've made in ableton, any idea where to go from here? Fixed the iffy timing https://clyp.it/wsb33w3b
Welcome! To the Facepunch Collaborative Part 12! Another album, and another opportunity to showcase your BEST music to everyone! Everyone is invited, the only thing you have to do is make a track YOU are proud of. There are a few rules: 1) You must be proud of the track, none of this "oh I don't know if this is good enough boohoo" crap, you're a musician, be proud of your craft. 2) You must be OK with any profits from this album to go to charity. 3) Hav fun! 4) All tracks must be mastered so that they're at -0,1db, if you don't know how to do this just send me the track and I'll just put a limiter on it. This is to ensure that every track has the same volume. 5) You must own all rights to whatever samples or stuff you use, we don't want to get any nasty lawsuits on our hands. 6) It is expected of you to give some feedback on all the tracks IF you have a track on this album, so have that in mind. The deadline will be on the 30th of may , we need a cover for the album as well so anyone who would be inclined to one would be totally awesome. (Uzbekistan, don't forget the rule about giving feedback before recieveing feedback as per thread rules :))
(Uzbekistan, don't forget the rule about giving feedback before recieveing feedback as per thread rules :))
I haven't forgotten, but I don't really feel there's much I can offer, criticism wise
I haven't forgotten, but I don't really feel there's much I can offer, criticism wise
That's so much bullshit people might mistake you for a cowboy. Here's a checklist for if you can give feedback: 1) Do you have ears? 2) Do you know how to translate thoughts into words If you pass either of the two things above, then you're more than equipped to give feedback. Feedback doesn't have to be a 2000 word essay about a track, it can be as simple as saying If you like/dislike a track, and what it is about the track you like/dislike. Bonus points if you can add thoughts on what you would do differently, such as adding/removing sounds, or building the track differently. You've shown already that you're a capable of building something composed of sounds in a manner that resembles a song, so clearly you have a much better understanding of music than a vast majority of people. This also puts you in a rather privileged position of having an at least rudimentary understanding of what's going on in a track beyond it just making sounds. So, you can most definietly give someone good feedback.
Yeah that's fair, I'll try harder in future
I just wanted to thank everyone for their recommendations on jazz a few pages back. Stan getz is fantastic and I've never heard Herbie that I liked aside from his funk stuff. Thanks for the recommendations guys, I've been listening and working on stuff every day and the posts were super helpful.
This made me laugh in a good way, I'm a sucker for this sort of stuff and I think you did a good job. Synth is pretty difficult to do stuff like this with but you managed to keep it expressive. Really quite nice! Very new school sort of 8bit music. I actually think this could benefit from being a tiny bit slower in tempo, maybe give that a try. I feel like the main piano melody is a bit faster than it needs to be (if you plan to keep working on it of course). That lead synth at around 1:20 - How did you get that? Here's a demo I worked on this evening: Might need to turn it up a bit. The guitar parts are really rough too so mind that. Actually the whole thing is rough haha, I didn't pay much attention to mixin I guess A friend of mine and I are also recording an album and we've got some great stuff going. Really exciting to be able to work with someone with the same taste in music as you and all the same ideas, its really liberating
I'm really liking the sound of this! Can I have any feedback on this? and another one I'm trying to make my own melodies and shit, but it's all new and it's hard.

You haven't fallen into convention yet so the stuff remains interesting. There's a lot of changes of key and modulations in there but it totally works and keeps it fresh. Your mixing needs work but these seem like demos so I doubt you needed to be told that by me. Actually your stuff reminds me of popol vuh's guitar a bit: You're definitely on the right path here - practice practice practice and post stuff here as you go Speaking of demos! Me and my friend just started a soundcloud to upload some of the demos we've done so far. They're in alpha if we're speaking computer terms, so they're undeveloped and definitely classify as 'in progress'. From a range of different genres as we try and find what we like to do. We'll be releasing an album at some point and hopefully finished versions of some of these make it on there :) A lot of this isn't as polished as what I post here under my own account but that's part of the fun of working with someone else for a change :)
