I couldn't find the music thread, so I'll leave this here, for all singers out here. Badass girl. (not mine, of course)
Welcome! To the Facepunch Collaborative Part 12!
Another album, and another opportunity to showcase your BEST music to everyone!
Everyone is invited, the only thing you have to do is make a track YOU are proud of.
There are a few rules:
1) You must be proud of the track, none of this "oh I don't know if this is good enough boohoo" crap, you're a musician, be proud of your craft.
2) You must be OK with any profits from this album to go to charity.
3) Hav fun!
4) All tracks must be mastered so that they're at -0,1db, if you don't know how to do this just send me the track and I'll just put a limiter on it. This is to ensure that every track has the same volume.
5) You must own all rights to whatever samples or stuff you use, we don't want to get any nasty lawsuits on our hands.
6) It is expected of you to give some feedback on all the tracks IF you have a track on this album, so have that in mind.
The deadline will be on the 30th of may , we need a cover for the album as well so anyone who would be inclined to one would be totally awesome.
(Uzbekistan, don't forget the rule about giving feedback before recieveing feedback as per thread rules :))
You should also note that everyone should add 300ms of silence before the actual song starts.
Ordered my first midi controller, now I just need to learn how to actually play piano!

Hey! That's what I bought too! It's fantastic, but that's coming from someone who's been playing piano for 10 years, so that might not mean much.
Also, does anyone have any advice as far as bouncing from project to project? I have this annoying habit of working on a song for a while and then just dropping it to make another thing, either because I forget about the song or just don't feel good about it. Then by the time I realize I should go back to it I just lack the motivation.
I'm really liking the sound of this!
Can I have any feedback on this?

and another one

I'm trying to make my own melodies and shit, but it's all new and it's hard.
So the first track I'm a bit confused, up until the halfwaymark it sounds really nice, and suddenly it turns really atonal and... Not nice. What's the plan with this track? I think some warm bass could help brighten this up, maybe some sort of ambient pad if you're going for a more relaxed track. IT sort of builds up to something right now but I'm not sure what.
Second track I like a lot more, the delay you've got going on the melody is really sweet and I think what you've got going here is what you should try and strive for in the first track, if you decide to continue on it.
How do you record the guitar?
[editline]8th May 2015[/editline]
There's something really liberating about the time just as you start to write your own melodies. You haven't fallen into convention yet so the stuff remains interesting. There's a lot of changes of key and modulations in there but it totally works and keeps it fresh. Your mixing needs work but these seem like demos so I doubt you needed to be told that by me.
Actually your stuff reminds me of popol vuh's guitar a bit:

You're definitely on the right path here - practice practice practice and post stuff here as you go
Speaking of demos! Me and my friend just started a soundcloud to upload some of the demos we've done so far. They're in alpha if we're speaking computer terms, so they're undeveloped and definitely classify as 'in progress'. From a range of different genres as we try and find what we like to do. We'll be releasing an album at some point and hopefully finished versions of some of these make it on there :)

A lot of this isn't as polished as what I post here under my own account but that's part of the fun of working with someone else for a change :)
The hihat has a very sharp sound to it, and sadly I can't say I like it that much! It sort of starts cutting into your ears when you crank the track up which sucks a lot, because that first track has some nice potential!
Have you ever thought about cutting down on the intro a bit? It feels like it should really kick it up at the 0:21 mark, and then progress further at 0:34.
Come to think of it, this maybe is just a track that's supposed to be in the background?
If it is then I think you might be on the right track in terms of dynamics and stuff.
Second track, I love the vocals and the guitar! Damn, so rough and dirty (the guitar) and the vocalist is just solid. She should definietly be higher in the mix, maybe even have the vocals run through some distortion? It could probably be a little bit wetter on the reverb too. Or if you want to have it in the background then I think the drums should be heavier, more hardhitting! Dirty them up, make em smack you in the face and force you to beg forgiveness!
It has the potential to be something the band Sleigh Bells could've made, and I'd say that's a very nice thing to sound like.
Third track, I would love to hear as a complete 3 minute track (or maybe 2½ minute?), either way I think it is way way too short as it is now, it sounds like the one that's the best made so far! Excellent work on all three tracks imo, some rougher than the others which is expected from a couple of demos.
So here's what I'm still working on, I feel it is getting closer and closer to the way I sort of want it, but I'm open to ideas!

Everything but the piano is too quiet, especially the drums. Otherwise it's a great track
Well, to be honest I don't really know how to build a melody or anything like that, I just recorded something I played, then added a second track and played something that came in my head on that. I don't know much about keys, what sounds nice or anything. I record my guitar by plugging it into an amp, then put a cable in the out/headphone slot and feed it directly to my microphone port on my computer, which has a nice sound, but there's this annoying low noise when I record, not sure how to fix it.
But yeah, basically I don't know what I'm doing and I'm just experimenting on what sounds nice. I also have no idea how to implement pads or anything like that in my melodies since I'm solely using Audacity, perhaps any of you know good recording software? Windows preferred ofcourse. Thank you for the feedback!

I disagree with Skeeter on this one, I like the progression in the second half a lot. Not gonna lie, I wasn't really into the first half, but I love the way the second half changes moods. It sounds deeper and sort of mysterious.

This is so clean. I don't know all about recording instruments, but whatever you did, you did it very well. I like the sound of the piano especially; real soft & relaxing. The first time I listened to this track, I was on another tab or something and didn't realize it was actually about to end, but I was anticipating the drums' return right at the end. It would have been awesome if you abruptly brought them back right there, but heavier and without the filter. Regardless, it's great as it is. I don't think there's really anything that needs correction.

I think the kick is too weak, I can hardly hear it after like 0:45. I also agree with redBadger on the piano being too loud compared to everything else. I'm sure it's meant to be the main focus, but the volume difference between it and the other instruments is distracting. The progression of it is nice, however, and it might also be worth saying that I really like the way the low piano notes sound alongside the toms at 1:48.

Agree with what everyone else has said. Besides that I like this piece, it sounds very familiar, but that just may be the progression. I also like how you've written the piano part to almost sound like a live performance, well done.

I really like the ambiance sound to it, but I didn't like the fact that the rhythm you wrote for the drums felt off the entire way through. I dunno if you meant to do that, but it was very disorienting for someone like me that looks for rhythms that I can jam with.

Here's something I've been writing. Its done, but I plan on getting my brother to master it for me as I want to use this one for the album. So I have a few more touches that need to be done.
Anyways hope you enjoy this orchestral/soundtrack work of mine. I probably say this all the time, but I think this is one of the best pieces I've written thus far. I absolutely love the middle section.

I'm not into these kind of songs but i actually love this! The classical sound (i can't tell which instrument is used) fits perfectly for this kind of track, this might be just me but i think the little "synth"/strange "juicy" sound after the kick (i'm terrible at this) should be removed or made a bit quieter, it makes the song sound strange. One part i especially like was when you started using the filter on the kick at 1:34, that was a nice transition and it was the perfect break between the two main parts. Finally, this is the kind of song i would hear in chill videos such as game tutorials (this isn't meant to be an insult by the way, usually the songs used there are calm and everyone likes them).
Now for my electronic songs, this might be a huge request though because i'm looking to know what is wrong with my songs: i feel like they lack something and sound awkward compared to every other song i hear (i'm ashamed of myself when i hear someone's first song sounding like something you would hear on the radio) and i don't know how to fix it.
Two of my latest (i still have the project file so i can do some editing) examples:

I already know the growl is a bit weird in this, i was proud of the first 20 seconds though.

I don't really like the structure and overall sound of this but i just can't put my finger on what is wrong :/.
Even the smallest/meanest criticism could help me, so i'm open to everything, these two songs are a "perfect" example of what i can do (my earliest songs were 100% presets, eugh).

That's exactly how I started! The annoying low noise comes from the way you record it, I would advice you on getting an external soundcard, that way you'll be able to record stuff a whole lot better!
I would recommend getting Cockos Reaper, it is a very cheap but incredibly efficent program (don't let the price tag fool you, it can do essentially everything that other big-budget programs can do) that I would say is one of the easiest programs to use for recording purposes.

I could definietly add more overtones to the kick, it is incredibly sub-bass right now. The kick is pretty heavy though in volume :/ There's no toms in this track! The only thing 'backing up' the bass notes on the piano is a cello and the kick :)

Thanks! I really tried to make it feel as human as possible, so you saying it sounding almost like a live performance is really great to hear :)
I don't have access to any good speakers currently so I'm afraid the feedback on the tracks will have to wait, sorry <3
Not really looking for feedback, but just finished this bootleg up and put it up for free download if anyone DJs and wants to snag a copy to play out :) If the music section were still around I'd have just made a thread there, but this feels like the most appropriate spot to drop this now.

The mixing is a bit out is what's up with it I think. My ears are pointing to the EQ on some of your instruments not leaving enough space for other instruments. It's not painfully bad in that way, it just needs a couple of tweaks. Might need a bit of tightening as well

Seems like the stuff you listen to is all quite aggressive, with the exception of some of the reggae and classical maybe. You should try your hand at some more alternative and softer stuff and some psychedelia and prog. Maybe choose some bands that fuse that with your favourite genre or work your way there. Listen to some Pop and some Dance too because great ideas can come from that
Even if you hate it, listen to it proper - its super useful

I can't help but feel there's a part of the spectrum missing, there's the really low frequencies of the the kick, and then there seems to be a gap up until your first bass-like instrument. It needs something that adds "oomph", something that connects your drums with the rest of the song. I often use the Hip Hop sub in Ableton for this, as it is very neutral/discrete but it also adds body. There's the question as to which notes it should play though, possibly just exactly the same ones as the bass you have now.
I also would prefer more snare on the 2 and 4 (if you would prefer a dubstep-ish sound, disregard that if you are going for a hardcore-ish sound, I'm no expert though). Stylistically the gun shot is, eh, questionable in my opinion. It'd be cool with a rapper though.
I haven't posted here in a while. This is an attempt at trying to get an upright piano to sound a bit decent, but I have no idea how to do it. I have an EQ that removes part of the noise (just a high pass, basically). I also turned up the mids & lows so it sounds less like it's being heard from a distance. Added a compressor with settings I found by playing around :v: I really have such little clue as to what I should do to get that piano to sound more full. I removed the front board and pointed my SM57 directly at it: about 20cm from the lowest strings. I couldn't get very close because my mic stand is broken, but it still sounds as if it's being played from another room.
Should I get closer? Or is it more of an EQ thing? Are there good guides for ghetto-setups with a single mic? :v:

Awesome :)
I use Guitar Pro to make drums, first I create the .midi file in Guitar Pro and after that I take the .midi file into FL studio or Reaper and use the EzDrummer plugin.
It sounds a bit like this then;

my left ear got really tickley after this song, it feels like it's panned too much to the left without payoff or enough stuff happening to the right
as mentioned by other people, all the other instruments are super quiet compared to the piano, so it has this sort of demo feel to it, like a youtube piano cover of a song or something, not quite sure how to describe it
the electronic sound on the drums creates an interesting contrast with the piano and strings, though it doesn't sound out of place at all, pretty cool
the actual piano melody has a very japanese doujin vibe to it, in fact, the whole track sounds like it's a part of a compilation album, right down to the production
solid otherwise, but some improvements on the mixing and stuff would help it out a fair bit

really not into how the drumbeat is always slightly off-beat, though
maybe that's a part of the style you're going for since i dont know much about electronic music, but i personally didn't like that
other than that no complaints, it's pretty cool, though not what i usually listen to

what's up with that third chord? even after all the times that chord progression happened i just don't get it
it sounds really sinister and evil as opposed the whole trailer-esque optimism the song otherwise radiates
if it weren't for that third chord sounding so out of place and instruments sounding a bit too computery, this would fit perfectly into a movie trailer and i really do mean it
it has a sort of superhero/space movie trailer feel to it, like it's from a trailer for Interstellar, Sunshine or one of those serious comic book movies that have been coming out recently

everything is very loud and because of the focus on higher pitches it gets very earpiercing
also, your drops are weaker than the actual build-up, the only thing i can hear is that one really noisey, high-pitched synth and the waves of high-pitched white noise
make everything way quieter, you can make it louder after the song is ready otherwise, but while you're still making it, keep it way quieter so you can spot and iron out the wierdnesses way easier
loudness doesn't equal intensity, your drops need way more bass and overall things going on, a good rule of thumb is that if your build-up has more layers and bass, then something is wrong

this is way, way, way better than Messed Up, it's got nice production that's easy on the ears and it never feels too loud or too quiet
you still have the problem of instruments fighting for dominance, some are way louder than others which makes it feel very unbalanced and unsatisfying
the bongos in the choruses need to be quieter, the main synth needs to be less dominating and the drums just aren't really working out
there's nothing wrong with the beats per-say, but they're way too soft for the speed and intensity you're going for and they feel too subdued
what could help you also is working more on panning stuff, most stuff, especially the drums and synths feel very centered, while the bongos and the occasional waves are more panned, which makes them stick out way more
open your song up more by panning stuff out, if everything is so consentrated instruments are going to overshadow eachother regardless of how much backing you give a main melody

you should use audacity's noise removal feature, it's by no means perfect but it could really help out
the main problem is that your mic picks up the high frequencies much more than it does the low frequencies, so the main melody is occasionally ear-piercing during louder notes while the lower notes are barely audible
that and there's barely any bass, i don't know much about recording and stuff like that, so i can't give you that much help on it, but i guess it's EQing that needs help?
anyway, the background noise actually gives it a nice, vintage vinyl vibe, if you can iron out the problem with the high notes this'd be a great chilling piece, i wouldn't mind sampling some of your jamming

now finally time for my song
it's been a while since my last redherring. stuff since i've been very distracted lately plus the batch i'm currently working on is more complex and effort-requiring than the previous 2
anyway, here's the second part of the 4-part drone metal piece "014: Only a True King Will Murder for the Crown", could definitely use some feedback on it

soundcloud did something fierce with the sound quality so there's a lot of artifacting that's not present in the actual version, no idea why that happened

Yeah I bet Audacity could indeed help with it, also I have a new technique where I use duct tape and 2 wooden sticks to suspend the mic directly downward into the (upright) piano :v: I could adjust the position of the mic so it picks up the right amount of each register. I'll send you the raw file if you want it for sampling, just PM me.

I have to respectfully disagree, I like the third chord. I was trying something new. I used a different chord progression instead of doing what everyone else always does. My progression is C minor, G# Major 1st inversion, C# minor, and then back to G# Major 1st inversion (Bear McCreary uses this in some of the Battlestar Galactica pieces). I like creating the whole mysterious/tension elements. What people usually do is C minor, G# Major 1st inversion, F Major 2nd inversion, and then back to G# Major 1st inversion. While that is a cool progression I've used it before. Another alternative could of been C minor, G# Major 1st inversion, A minor 2nd inversion, and then G# Major 1st inversion, which I like that one too. And yes instruments do sound a bit computery, but that is something I'm always striving to do better with.
I do appreciate the feedback and thank you for the kind words in the second half, haha.
