I have to respectfully disagree, I like the third chord. I was trying something new. I used a different chord progression instead of doing what everyone else always does. My progression is C minor, G# Major 1st inversion, C# minor, and then back to G# Major 1st inversion (Bear McCreary uses this in some of the Battlestar Galactica pieces). I like creating the whole mysterious/tension elements. What people usually do is C minor, G# Major 1st inversion, F Major 2nd inversion, and then back to G# Major 1st inversion. While that is a cool progression I've used it before. Another alternative could of been C minor, G# Major 1st inversion, A minor 2nd inversion, and then G# Major 1st inversion, which I like that one too. And yes instruments do sound a bit computery, but that is something I'm always striving to do better with.
I do appreciate the feedback and thank you for the kind words in the second half, haha.
doing a more mysterious and tense feeling to contrast a light feeling is a good idea, but the way it's done in your song just doesn't work for me
there's not enough time for the light chords to have the hopeful feel sink in properly before the tense parts come in, it's just a constant zig-zag without any atmosphere having the proper time to build up
We'll have to just agree to disagree.
great production, very nice and thick, no complaints on that
really not into how the drumbeat is always slightly off-beat, though
maybe that's a part of the style you're going for since i dont know much about electronic music, but i personally didn't like that
other than that no complaints, it's pretty cool, though not what i usually listen to
Thank you. The drums just have some swing, which I guess doesn't have the same effect at only 60 bpm, but I like that sort of thing.

I feel conflicted with this. It sounds really good but like someone else said previously the drums don't give off a rhythm to it and personally sounds like organised chaos. I can see what you're trying to do and it's nearly there.
___________________________________________________
Haven't made anything proper in a year and tried my hand out manipulating vocals(the lead that comes in around 36ish seconds in) and building a song around it. Only really been making this for a few hours so it's a bit all over the place and in very very rough stages. Any feedback?

Hey man this is super good, good stuff. Sounds a bit like owl city but a bit harder and less pussy. I love the pitched down vocals and the lead synth that comes in about halfway through the second bit. Obviously you need to work on the structure and make it a bit longer but you've only been making it for a few hours so I guess you already know that.
We wrote a throwaway jazz piece for fun. And you know what I'm really fuckin happy with it.

Smudged Lines -
I love that third chord, it works so well with the whole progression!
It flows very well with how it builds up, I could see how adding a vocal choir would make it even cooler after the intro buildup. Some bass choir, maybe a tenor adding a chorus on the violin?
Same goes for after the big juicy main part, but instead you should definietly add a soprano choir here! High-pitched aahs. That way the buildup with added bass instruments will make it explode like it sounds like it should!
The samples you're using are beautiful, which ones were you using again? And is it bought samples, or have you aquired them in some other way?
[editline]18th May 2015[/editline]
I disagree with Skeeter on this one, I like the progression in the second half a lot. Not gonna lie, I wasn't really into the first half, but I love the way the second half changes moods. It sounds deeper and sort of mysterious.
This is so clean. I don't know all about recording instruments, but whatever you did, you did it very well. I like the sound of the piano especially; real soft & relaxing. The first time I listened to this track, I was on another tab or something and didn't realize it was actually about to end, but I was anticipating the drums' return right at the end. It would have been awesome if you abruptly brought them back right there, but heavier and without the filter. Regardless, it's great as it is. I don't think there's really anything that needs correction.
I think the kick is too weak, I can hardly hear it after like 0:45. I also agree with redBadger on the piano being too loud compared to everything else. I'm sure it's meant to be the main focus, but the volume difference between it and the other instruments is distracting. The progression of it is nice, however, and it might also be worth saying that I really like the way the low piano notes sound alongside the toms at 1:48.

I try and count the tempo on the drums, is this some 10/8 beat? I really dig the ambient synths and the bass, the bass in particular is gorgeous! I actually love this shit now that I've listened to it twice, the time signatures fuck with you so bad when you start to listen to it, but like everything once you get used to it it rocks.
Awesome work mate :)
[editline]18th May 2015[/editline]
I can't help but feel there's a part of the spectrum missing, there's the really low frequencies of the the kick, and then there seems to be a gap up until your first bass-like instrument. It needs something that adds "oomph", something that connects your drums with the rest of the song. I often use the Hip Hop sub in Ableton for this, as it is very neutral/discrete but it also adds body. There's the question as to which notes it should play though, possibly just exactly the same ones as the bass you have now.
I also would prefer more snare on the 2 and 4 (if you would prefer a dubstep-ish sound, disregard that if you are going for a hardcore-ish sound, I'm no expert though). Stylistically the gun shot is, eh, questionable in my opinion. It'd be cool with a rapper though.
I haven't posted here in a while. This is an attempt at trying to get an upright piano to sound a bit decent, but I have no idea how to do it. I have an EQ that removes part of the noise (just a high pass, basically). I also turned up the mids & lows so it sounds less like it's being heard from a distance. Added a compressor with settings I found by playing around :v: I really have such little clue as to what I should do to get that piano to sound more full. I removed the front board and pointed my SM57 directly at it: about 20cm from the lowest strings. I couldn't get very close because my mic stand is broken, but it still sounds as if it's being played from another room.
Should I get closer? Or is it more of an EQ thing? Are there good guides for ghetto-setups with a single mic? :v:
A condensator microphone is your best bet if you have access to one, I think one thing you could try and do is doing something like this with your Sm57

Afterwards you might want to copy the recorded signal, squash the everliving shit out of it so that you get a nice and juicy sausage of piano, and then blend the unaffected signal with the one with a compressor.
You can always use a multi-band compressor later on to get the various spectrums out better, and then tweak with the EQ.
As with all acoustic instruments the room in particular is of interest, if you have the time you should push the piano around and record it everywhere, use the same mic placement and see where you get the best timbre of the instrument.
You probably wont get a lot of bass from the microphone you're using though, the Sm57 is pretty bad at capturing the lower bass frequencies I'm afraid.

It's really just 4/4, but with some swing. I often do it the same way with my more hiphop-ish shit, but I guess it sounds sort of awkward in this track since it's so slow.
I like my music a little sloppy, so the rhythm of this sounds right to me, but I was conflicted about it for a while with the others thinking it's fucked, so I'm glad you feel it after listening again. :v:

Thank you. I'm glad I'm not the only one, haha. But what an interesting thought, I'll play around with it and see if its worth reuploading a new version.
The library I use is called EastWest. They had a deal awhile back where they would ship you a 1 TB harddrive with almost there entire collection. It was $999 if I believe. Looking back, I could probably could of done without half of what's in that collection. I mainly use the Symphonic Orchestra and the Piano pack. The others I'll only use if I'm looking for a specific sound. I do want to get even higher quality orchestra vst's at some point, but I'm hesitant. I'd like to make more money doing this than I am currently, but all I get is rare random commissions. Nothing I could even consider supporting myself off of.

Welcome! To the Facepunch Collaborative Part 12!
Another album, and another opportunity to showcase your BEST music to everyone!
Everyone is invited, the only thing you have to do is make a track YOU are proud of.
There are a few rules:
1) You must be proud of the track, none of this "oh I don't know if this is good enough boohoo" crap, you're a musician, be proud of your craft.
2) You must be OK with any profits from this album to go to charity.
3) Hav fun!
4) All tracks must be mastered so that they're at -0,1db, if you don't know how to do this just send me the track and I'll just put a limiter on it. This is to ensure that every track has the same volume.
5) You must own all rights to whatever samples or stuff you use, we don't want to get any nasty lawsuits on our hands.
6) It is expected of you to give some feedback on all the tracks IF you have a track on this album, so have that in mind.
7) You must add 300ms of silence at the start of the track!
The deadline will be on the 30th of may , we need a cover for the album as well so anyone who would be inclined to one would be totally awesome.

Very strange track. I like the sound and the overall atmosphere, it seems like a good backing track for something.
Heres a little song I wrote on guitar. Ive only been playing off and on for a year so there are plenty of mistakes, just wanted to know what yall thought about it.

Also added some reverb to the track just messing around and it came out all spacey.

Last edit. Layered on some more reverb. Very loud at end, my brain felt funny listening to this one.

Here's something I started today. It should sound like its 1941 in Russia. Currently this work is not complete. The second half of the piece I plan on depicting the German forces moving in and causing havoc on the Russian army. Then I'll return to the main melody from the beginning. We'll see though, I have no idea how it will actually sound. This is just what I'm imagining, haha.
In the background you may hear this weird siren sound. Its an air raid siren. I've tried writing the piece in the same key as the siren.

now finally time for my song
it's been a while since my last redherring. stuff since i've been very distracted lately plus the batch i'm currently working on is more complex and effort-requiring than the previous 2
anyway, here's the second part of the 4-part drone metal piece "014: Only a True King Will Murder for the Crown", could definitely use some feedback on it

soundcloud did something fierce with the sound quality so there's a lot of artifacting that's not present in the actual version, no idea why that happened
It sounds like the drums are clipping, at least on the right channel and when the whole dum, dum, dum, dum dumdum restarts.
You know what I think would be really cool? If there were some cymbals throughout this song, or anything that occupies the higher registers. Right now it feels like the mid and bass are pretty occupied, and nothing on the higher frequencies.
I guess the drums you're using are some sort of toms? I think it could be immensly cool if you were to add some rolls every now and then so that the whole dum, dum, dum , dum dumdum thing feels more organic and dynamic.
Not fond at all of the droneish noise you have, I think it could work if you had a guitar or something laying down open chords that fades out and dies, maybe get some feedback going? It feels incredibly static as it is right now and giving it all a more 'live' feel would do wonders for the track. Especially if you want it to be something people can crank up and listen to. '
I suppose the main instrument you're using is some sort of guitar or bass that you've laid a huge compressor on and squashed it to bits? I'd love to know what your thoughts are behind this track, because I could imagine it being used as an intro track or something between songs if it's cut down and concentrated to a <2 minute piece. If you want it to go on longer then I would advice working heavily on dynamics and not it being a thick sausage, nuances and dynamics is what makes tracks that are longer than the 3 minute mark work. :)
Speaking of which, I've took the advice of you guys to heart and tweaked up volumes, changed up stuff (skipped the wind instruments and there's only string instruments now) and reworked some melodies. Also tried to work more on dynamics, I hope you guys will like it!

there's some clipping yeah, i'm pretty awful at mixing and producing and all that since i only recently started working with real instruments and recordings instead of midi stuff, but i'll try to fix the clipping in the calmer parts
i'll muck about with adding some cymbals, but i don't think it'd fit what i'm going for with the track
some added drum rolls might work, i'll have to experiment with that a bit as well
going to have to disagree with you on the drones, though, i'm very satisfied with how they are right now and i'm not planning to change them
the track is the second track on the album, preceeded by a 17-minute track of just straight-forward drone metal with a guitar and succeeded by a rhythmic, kinda industrial track to play off the kinda tribal sound of this track
do you listen to a lot of drone, especially drone metal? this track is pretty eventful and dynamic for drone metal standards, i feel
thanks for the feedback though, opinions are always good to hear

Nice, I love how natural the guitars sound, if that makes any sense. Also, there's a lot of elements that make it interesting, I didn't expect it to take the turn it did. Those echo-y vocals are pretty sweet. The drums as well, they almost sound like they'd fit a drum and bass track.
Here's something I came up with, the original inspiration was Wiz Khalifa's Taylor Gang but I'm not sure you can even hear that. I played around with Ableton's Saturator, and it really gives the kick some power.
