I'm glad this is still a thing. here's something i made when i was real bored excuse my mediocre timing just did it all in one take [editline]12th June 2015[/editline]
Yeah I never found an acceptable Jazz sight-reading book either. Usually the transcriptions are funked up and not useful if you actually wanna like, play some jazz.
i just use the chord notation lol try to make me play a melody? fuck you!

Made a new rule where if you're posting your music you gotta provide feedback on someone elses track in the same post as well, unless youre like using your track as an example to show somebody something. Stops us from going down that dead thread route Are you still doing stuff in Vellhouse as well?
nah vellhouse broke up my post i was giving feedback to ah fuck it whatever
nah vellhouse broke up my post i was giving feedback to ah fuck it whatever
Yeah no I get it, it's fine, I'm just used to telling people who've returned to the thread since the subforum died because it wasn't in place before and most people don't read OPs Shame about that though, I liked the stuff you had on youtube
Man I bought a Fender Mustang III V2 Combo amp like a month ago and now its not working. Just not powering on at all seems completely dead. Tried different adapters (It came with a 2 pin plug but I'm in Ireland so need a 2 pin adapter), but still nothing. Have no idea what's wrong with it, fairly sad. Any ideas?
https://grasspuke.bandcamp.com/album/the-formative-years Finally let go of all my unfinished projects from 2008-2014, I'm fucking ready to move on. Criticism not necessary, I'm just happy to get these off of my computer and onto the internets.
and can anyone crit me on this one too? nobody seemed to notice it QQ
I really like the bass in the first one, and the breaks are fine too. Not a whole lot to say about this one since it's so short but there's room for greatness in this one. The second one's pads remind me a lot of squarepusher. I agree with WoodenSpoon, the bit at the 1:00 mark could have had a really nice transition into the hook. It sounds really good, and it would be even better if there was a melody going along the pads. The breaks are fine in this one too, but they would progress much better if there was a big change in their overall rhythm. Tried to emulate the Oddworld OST with those weird synth insect sounds and pads! Love that soundtrack so much. Some breaks I worked on a little more.

Hey MrJazzy maybe this snare will work for you? [t]http://i.imgur.com/UVcg6qd.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/GfGY81C.png[/t] could use some tuning but idk two people have thought it sounds good
So there's this kind of ringing sound that I hear all over early 90's electronic music, and I haven't been able to identify it. https://www.dropbox.com/s/0qu5djqh98y8bi0/90s%20sound.wav?dl=0 Anyone know what this is, and how to recreate it? Was this a preset on some popular synthesizer at the time?
Sounds like a fairly low resolution minor chord stab. I'd wager it was on a Roland sampler card at some point in the late 80's. There might be a similar sound in the General MIDI sound set since that came from the Roland sampler line.

Please extend it, it wants to go somewhere. [editline]14th June 2015[/editline] I hate the sound of this but I guess the composition is alright. Pretty boring Emadd9-D6-Bm7-E9.

Pretty boring Emadd9-D6-Bm7-E9.
I like the drums and I love the piano chords. Cool synths too. I would like the bass to be a bit less loud maybe. A lot of stuff going on in your track giving it a "full" sound, if that makes any sense.
Hey MrJazzy maybe this snare will work for you? could use some tuning but idk two people have thought it sounds good
Hey, I decided to check out some tutorials on drum compressions to get better at it and tried doing it in a song I made this afternoon for a friends game. It's still not great but better, will upload it later.

Also the snare seems a bit compressed. But yeah overall its pretty decent, some of the instrument voices seem vaguely pre-setty but yeh. I haven't written any music for a while, but i did a remix of a friends track for his album, it's an .it module, and I limited myself to 5 voices. I would post this on a chipmusic only site, but it helps to get opinions and criticism from people who might have a different view on how things should sound/ ways in which you can do things

I encourage learning it thoroughly, while I wait for my coursera music theory courses to start I've been watching loads of ableton instruction videos and such learning how to use the various elements.
Off-Topic: that is one of the ugliest DAW's I've ever seen, and I've worked in prehistoric DAW's.
Welcome to Ableton :D

I find that the guitar doesn't have enough presence, but drowns out the sounds of the drums aside from the snares or whatever.
Uhm yeah I have no friends so I spent the entire day making a Dreet Dubstep Remix (The Walking Dead) i dont even like twd fml
I'm trying to fix that, all of my mix sound different because I'm bumping things up that are too quiet til i can hear them. When I put compressors over each instrument they just change up in the mix too much
Compress and do EQ work first. High-pass either your drums or your bass line deciding which you want more at the front. Try to keep your bass and kick at the center but consider broadening the rest of your instruments in stereo channels or parking different drum elements differently. Give the iZotope mixing guide a read, it's quite good! Volume adjustments and master filtering are the last thing you should do. And if your bass lacks texture, consider a low power chorus plugin.

No matter what I do though, even when switching plugins or whatever, it still sounds like mushy tape.

I'm not ACE at mastering yet but the difference between my first and most recent mixdown is pretty drastic. Try some of the tips I've mentioned and give me your most vanilla project files if you use ableton and I'll try to help okay?

Do you still record to tape?

Most of what I do is outboard so Ableton ain't that useful for me. [editline]14th June 2015[/editline]
How do you get it to sound like mushy tape in the first place? Do you still record to tape?
I don't have a compressor so I use the peak reduction of my cassette deck's Dolby II on some tracks; old acid house trick which is why the drums sound the way they do. I think all the effects that I use also contribute to the mushy sound. The guitar pedal I use for all my effects is like twenty years old. Now that I think about it, the mushiness makes more and more sense.

That compressor has too many options. I just want one knob called "Compression".
That compressor has too many options. I just want one knob called "Compression".
Not how it works if you want to actually adjust the sound, theres a lot more to compression than just compression = good. Read this, it has loads of info and would do you loads of good. [editline]14th June 2015[/editline] are you applying compression before or after FX? Have you considered using a limiter to cut some of the hardest peaks on a few tracks before feeding it into the compressor?
I'm joking of course, I've done pro stuff in a pro studio. I'm a producer, I'm behind the boards and I'm all up in the video. It's just when you're working with stuff that has little dynamics in the first place, a lot of compression has little effect. That stupid slap bass comes out of the box with like barely 5 db's worth of dynamic. I just need to study more of that good FM shit. The mushiness is probably 50-75% composition.
