Digged into an old project file yesterday and finished this thing. I think I could have handled the drum levels better.
It sounds like part of a puzzle game soundtrack, calm and collected. I think the drum levels are fine, but I think some of the synths could be louder. Pretty cool! --- Another EDM thing. Dubstep maybe?
Does anybody have advice for attracting listeners? I've noticed that I've never really advertised my music and it'd be nice to know that it was being heard, somewhere, by someone :v:
Does anybody have advice for attracting listeners? I've noticed that I've never really advertised my music and it'd be nice to know that it was being heard, somewhere, by someone :v:
Every time you post a new track on Soundcloud it will show up somewhere in the explore section. I've gained quite few listeners that way, though not many. Otherwise, just talk to people. If you meet someone who seems interested in the kind of music you make, show them your Soundcloud page. With any luck they'll like it and show it to their friends. Just don't be pushy about it. Having a Facebook page may also help a little bit.
hello gig room long time no see, i got a question for you guys. i got some money (not a lot) recently that i can spend upgrading my terrible 3rd world country recording setup. the main thing i need is an interface and i'm not too fussed about its pedigree it just needs to be class compliant. the other thing i am looking at is a new pair of headphones to replace these really nasty cheap ones. a mate of mine has a focusrite scarlett 2i2 and after having a little play with it it seems servicable so i went on ebay and lo and behold they sell them in a bundle with headphones and a mic for roughly within my price range. this shit is what i'm talking about. am i right in assuming the headphones and mic are gonna be terrible and it's not really worth my time or is this actually an ok deal?
You see these cheeky bastards lying everywhere the house, but when you finally need it its gone. [t]http://www.guitarnoise.com/images/articles/2/1.gif[/t]
Does anybody have advice for attracting listeners? I've noticed that I've never really advertised my music and it'd be nice to know that it was being heard, somewhere, by someone :v:
Well since FB actively hates small-time musicians and soundcloud listeners are mostly just bots, it's back to word of mouth i'd say. Just tell everybody. Tell them to tell everyone they know. Make some CDs and hand them out. Maybe do some cool artwork to go with it. Not everyone likes unheard local music but everybody likes owning CDs :v:
A while ago I "finished" the composition of my first track ever. I wasn't super happy with it and think it needs more variety, but I wanted to just commit to something and learn from the mastering process. This is about my 7th (I think) attempt at mixing and mastering, and I'm actually pretty proud of it. I notice improvement myself, and I've changed quite a few of the sounds around and made the mix so much less muddy than it originally was when I first tried mixing and mastering. For contrast, I'm posting the basic composition of the song with some of my shitty effects and pre-mixing mastering on it. That, or its actually my first mix. I have so many project files in this folder its not even funny. The second link is the newest version.
I dig it, it's a really good mix of drums and I like that bass sound. I don't really have much to say about it overall, are you planning on doing any more on it? The only thought I really had was maybe remove those lonesome hat hits at the very beginning or add a reversed crash or something to make it feel like more of a drop. Apart from that the variation between sections is really nice and keeps it from sounding too simple and plain. Good job dude! [editline]21st July 2015[/editline]
I love the way it progresses, I can already see the music video in my head. Most people that are "promoters" or "producers" are full of shit, but if you can find somebody that actually has connections to send your music to so they can get it distributed it'd be worth getting buddy buddy with them.

When the pads and pluck come in though, it sounds great though. Also that breakdown(?) at 0:47 is kinda weird because I'm expecting drums or something but its the same melody. Maybe move the drums at 0:47 to around 1:20, or add a part of the drums or just get rid of it entirely but its up too you. I need to get better at naming projects and actually finishing projects before starting new ones. But, ADHD brain. All the creativity, just enough attention span for 8 bar loops.
I really like how this sounds. The drums are nice and dirty sounding, and there is enough going on in the track to make it sound busy enough. I'd consider giving that bassline synth "more" though, either varying it a bit upping the reverb giving it a chorus idunno something (maybe flanger in and out of segments?). Could also use a bit more variety in between sections and stuff like that. Its a very solid base, now its about building it up and out and tweaking it! Also, hows the stereo image? It seems sorta narrow but that could be my horribad speakers. I spent quite a while creating a really nice and punchy gated snare sound for the synthwavey-ish thingy I'm working on at the moment, and it sounds excellent in my DAW but goes to shit when rendered and uploaded, turning all hissy and sounding ungated. Sounds a lot like something from Farcry Blood Dragon, I love the middle part of the song after the bridge, the rhythm section gets really interesting, love all the start and stops and little twirls you do with it, I wish that part lasted a little big longer to see where it would head, but I guess it's better to make a concise song rather then make it like a 6 minute long track just for indulgence's sake. I'm too lazy with my music, that's why I just make overnight shit for like 30 minutes. I made this last night after I couldn't go to sleep

It sounds like a keyboard, however, that doesn't really suit, it doesn't sound like a synth. It's hard to describe without actually knowing what's going on with the sound, though, sorry I'm not much help. :( Also, later on in the song, beginning around 3.20, you start to use the drums differently, increasing their tempo. It sounds fine the way it is, but, I dunno if it's suit for purpose. The kick sounds too subtle in comparison to the high hat in that little section. ok bye i hope you all don't hate me yet

It's mostly just the timing of everything that feels really off. On top of bad timing, the drums seem to come in an awkward order in some places. Lots of sounds also seem to pop in at unpredictable times. At places like 0:55 there is way too much going on at once and it feels really loud. Less so throughout the rest of the song but it's still there, just sounds like noise in a lot of places. Only criticism is that it sounds pretty much the same throughout 4 minutes (!) - maybe add a bridge or some random parts; the quieter parts or the drum solo part just sound like you've muted certain instruments rather than standing alone as their own part of the song. Drums sound a wee bit too distorted as well; maybe tone it down just a small bit as the small amount of distortion really adds to the punch
It sounds like part of a puzzle game soundtrack, calm and collected.
Sounds like a remix of the Mii channel theme - does sound very nice, I like what you're trying to do with it. I can't place my fingers exactly on what it is, but the main synth OR the drums just doesn't feel punch enough - definitely something on the mastering side rather than composition. Compress the shit out of the drums, and maybe add some sub-bass on the chords to give it a real good punch? I don't really know, but you've definitely got something good there
https://soundcloud.com/messier-51/vitamin-c-and-jasmine-t-greeeen/s-x6oDS Here's something I'm currently working on, I haven't got the mix down yet, there are somethings that are way too loud such as that shake/cabasa thing.
The whole song is unbelievably synth-wave, intro almost identical to Real Human Being - I dig it. Totally nailed. I know what you mean about the shake, drums just need a little bit more presence in the song. Maybe use an even cheesier 80s synth sample! I love it.
Trying to get more into rap instrumentals. It's basically all I've listened too for a while now as well. Feedback would be nice.
Almost feels like I'm saying the same thing - you've got something there. Track is only missing phatness. I'm not sure the synth closer to the end is the right one to go for, the first thing I think of is some chiptune styled track; not really sure what to suggest. Potentially cut down a bit on the reverb? Abuse the bassline, that's a very good one you have there.
I made this last night after I couldn't go to sleep
Have no idea why, but this sounds like the first draft for something Tyler the Creator would make; i'm assuming it's because of how offbeat everything is - makes it very funky. I don't know wether I have some personally vendetta against chiptune-styled synths but they feel just out of place in this track, IMO doesn't really fit with the whole sort of "drugged up" vibe the song has. Some calm synth with a shitload of portamento sounds like it'd be cool to experiment with.
I've been working on on some progressive/deep housey stuff, I'm liking it is so far but I'm not sure where to go with it.
Sounds very anjunabeaty, I like it. Have you tried putting a sidechained compressor on the background / ambient synths, and trying more of a marimba styled lead instrument? I mean you've got exactly what's needed from a house track there, simply just the mastering.
Sounds pretty nice, I like the chord progression and use of chiptune-styled vsts/ samples. Only criticism is that it sounds pretty much the same throughout 4 minutes (!) - maybe add a bridge or some random parts; the quieter parts or the drum solo part just sound like you've muted certain instruments rather than standing alone as their own part of the song. Drums sound a wee bit too distorted as well; maybe tone it down just a small bit as the small amount of distortion really adds to the punch Sounds like a remix of the Mii channel theme - does sound very nice, I like what you're trying to do with it. I'm cooking and cleaning right now but I'll critique your track as soon as I'm done. You really went above and beyond and everyone here appreciates the feedback, I'm sure. So thanks again <3 [editline]27th July 2015[/editline]
piss about, tried to make something that wasn't just a cover. went for a sort of bonobo "piss about with loops, keep it simple" downtempo vibe.
Reminds me, sort of, of the Bejeweled soundtrack. Fun, atmospheric, synthesized music. The hats feel a little bit loud at the start, maybe. Really dig the synth though, its clear and has a really nice timbre to it. And the little filtered guitar bit in the outro was neat as well. Clap sound and percussion in general also neat. Maybe expand it with your own stuff instead of loops? Its neat and worth the effort if you ask me :D [editline]27th July 2015[/editline] Haven't spammed resources and links in a while so here goes. Plugins first, just a small batch of analog sounding stuff TAL tuesday is now a new holiday. TAL makes a bunch of neat VSTs and plugins that have that classic "analog" sound, and their free stuff is pretty good. The TAL Noisemaker is a nice simple analog synth VST that still has enough options for one to have fun with, and can be used to make really nice rich super saw sounds. Here's an example of just a simple arpeggio with me adjusting filter cutoff to fade it in; The TAL Chorus plugin is very similar to the one used on the Juno 106 and JX-3P, as the noisemaker and the other Juno themed plugins are going after this analog sound. Most of the TAL Synths include some form of this chorus, but the independent plugin allows you to control volume, dry/wet, and stereo width. It can add a lot of texture and movement to a track, and be used to give it move width and seem to be more wide. another shitty example here: TAL Reverb is same thing, retro analog warmth and effect. You can use it to generate a really big room type effect, and I really enjoyed how it worked out for my gated snare. Gave it tremendous power and punch and really worked well for an 80's vibe. It doesn't show up very well here and there are obviously much better uses for it, but you can get an idea of the kind of obnoxious things you could do with this reverb. It also works on a much more moderate level for a retro or different reverb sound, if you'd like to mix it up beyond your DAW's stock reverb. The TAL Bassline is a simple monophonic synthesizer and can be obtained on the same page. Its pretty good for a free VST, but I'm spoiled by the Bass Station vst included with my Launchkey. It has a decent amount of tweakability without being too insane, but it sounds sorta vanilla and bland if you ask me. Worth a shot though! Here's a big link to a massive collection of samples I found this weekend. And because you probably need to sort all of these samples, here's a tool that was just posted on /r/edmproduction today. Along with this rather useful article on basslines. that should be enough spam for now
oh and forgot this neat analog emulation compressor, doesn't even have time values for attack and release. And can go up to an absolutely inane amount of compression and a stupid amount of makeup. Its neat and fun to play with though, and you can do some crazy things with it that sound really unique. [editline]27th July 2015[/editline] rip my merge oh god
Something I made in the last few days out of the blue.
i think that the synths have to much reverb on them, it makes the track kinda hazy. the melodies and stuff are awesome
Tried making something that would fit in one of the old Need for Speed or Unreal Tournament games
this definitely sounds like it should be in an old UT game, that synth and the amen break loop. dope stuff just dropped this last week. just hit 20k plays on it :)
I love it, very relaxed but seems like it will build up to something huge. Overall production is perfect. Could benefit from some vocals, if you have a singer that is. ____________________________________________ Something I made in the last few days out of the blue. Looking for thoughts, etc.
i'd focus on bringing the kick and snare through a tiny bit more in the mix, the track sounds pretty bright and vibey and it's got quite a bit of character for EDM, just a little more crispiness from the drums would be to my taste personally :)) [editline]27th July 2015[/editline]
How's this sound? The bass gives it more of a dancy feel than what I intended but I rather like it.
i'm loving the grit on those drums, they kinda juxtapose nicely with the happier riffs of that moog sound [editline]27th July 2015[/editline] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Txyh6LiKrJY&feature=autoshare this one isn't from a complete mix, rather it's a fragment of one, I'm more interested in hearing about how I can improve and develop my vocals for singing and kinda chanting in tracks, doing a bit of both, similar to Gentleman's Dub Club, Random Hand, The Skints, bands like that from england, but I can't afford a coach so I've been kind of trying to lap up little tidbits online and learn from vocalists who went to my college for other music courses :v: it's just difficult to find feedback from strangers, y'know, to get that 100% honesty and criticism
I'm going to post a reply here updating my general status. Just came back from a universities touring thing and I kept a notebook around, scribbling whatever ideas I got. So I'm going to be orchestrating and working on a few of these ideas and hopefully i can get some stuff made. I also created a musical shorthand (instead of writing ABCDEFG, they're simplified to one-stroke symbols, they look kinda like this (from A to G): | o c כ L ˥ ᴖ , and underlining makes them flat whereas writing a line above them makes them sharp) Anyway, yeah, I might be coming up with some actual finished stuff soon.
