You could pick up one of the Scarlett 2i2 or similar recording interfaces, they're decent enough quality to start. A lot of people (myself included) would LOVE to have a bass player record things live, you just can't reproduce the sound quite right in a DAW, especially when it comes to funky riffs in Nu Disco and French House. Starting from an actual instrument gives you a lot more power in making your own tracks, and I recommend you to leverage that and use your bass skills in anything you make. And let me know if you ever record some fun stuff, I could use some fun funky bass lines :D
Thank you so much for the feedback. I would love to work with someone who actually knows what they are doing with music programs I am still a newbie lol. I like just playing the instrument :3
oh god that automation ew why I mean its great you're doing all that and nice names for some of that shit but damn Ableton has a much nicer way of sorting automation
Until you want to move/copy/paste an audio or midi clip without touching the automation.
Until you want to move/copy/paste an audio or midi clip without touching the automation.
shhhhhh no one needs to know about that but seriously thats fucking annoying and I don't know why they haven't fixed that yet or made a workaround, it can be rarely useful but usually is just a pain
oh god that automation ew why I mean its great you're doing all that and nice names for some of that shit but damn Ableton has a much nicer way of sorting automation
ok? lol
ok? lol
i rly dont like dealing with autmoation clips in fl, like when you've got 4-5 its ok but when u have 10-20+ it gets hard keeping track even if u rename and colour everything these are things we have to deal with though [editline]3rd August 2015[/editline] musicians unite, we shall let no technical or practical obstacle hinder us from making good or bad music

On the topic of automation in FL: never name your shit in the middle of a track [t]https://och.re/JfUuc8sJDX.jpeg[/t] and to this day, I have yet to figure out what 3 of those automation clips really do.

Also 6k followers, damn. Played live or tried performing yet? I've always thought that would be piles of fun regardless of dosh but don't think I can get to that point for a long time yet, friend of mine has an in at a local club and says I could play but good lord I am nowhere near ready [editline]2nd August 2015[/editline] Anyone used a Roland FA-06 or Yamaha MOXF6? Looking for a workstation synth to complement my Midi keyboard. Really like the JD-Xi but mini keys are gross, and the JD-XA is too expensive and in that price range I could do better or go for a dedicated synth
You're work is brilliant! Spent last night checking all the tracks. It grooves, it chills...my type of music. I like the sounds and the balance. Would love to maybe hear you experiment with composition aspects, having more than one or two melodies (counterpoint, 2nd/3rd voices, etc) playing at times creates really cool layers and colors. Love your stuff!
thanks I'm trying to get better, need to go out of my way more to make more complex rhythms and work on my arrangements and split up the songs into parts with different chords and melodies and also figure out the sounds to make it stand out more

I use the Traktor Kontrol S2 for mixing, the Midifighter 3d on the side gives me like 20 more effects than just the line of effects at the top of the controller. The Novation Launchpad on the side is to trigger visuals. It's pretty fun, but I end up having to use the venue's PA systems for the audio and it isn't guaranteed to have a subwoofer that's kind of needed in my style of music.

The MX-1 has the ability to cue and perform other DJ-like programs that most DAW-compatible controllers don't have. An alesis 3642 compressor would be nice too, for sidechaining and getting that pumping french house vibe and all. [editline]2nd August 2015[/editline] And the subwoofers are a problem, my headphones are MDR-XB500's and apparently they go down to 3hz. I do know that even at a pretty low volume, your track made them rumble and vibrate a bit. I've gotten used to them and don't really cut the lows aggressively, but its something that causes me to forget that not all systems pick that stuff up [editline]2nd August 2015[/editline] tbh I have a roland fetish/problem though, its bad.
I've been meaning to get back into making music on and off, but I know so little about ProTools that no matter how hard I try, my bounces or exports are always ~5dB quieter than a normal MP3 and I've gotten to the point where i just want to hurt my computer through a window i've tried follow tutorials step for step, still don't know what I'm doing, still can't make shit loud even when everything's clipping fuck that
What equipment are you using
Scarlett 2i2, Win7 PC, PT10. I'm just trying to bounce the goddamn AIFF or MP3 at a decent output volume. Even if everything is max clipping it's still quieter than any other audio file. Just listen to something on my soundcloud and then listen to anything else on soundcloud, they're so much quieter.

Anyone else have a problem detecting bad sounding synths? Some I can definitely pick up on but everyone keeps bashing the Jupiter-50 and I just don't hear the problem. I like analogs loads, but I don't think all digitals are bads and the new Jupiters seem to do pretty damn well. [editline]3rd August 2015[/editline] i do not hear the issue.
Hell my standards are even lower :v: I think this is glorious, fucking Ravel/Debussy (?) synthpop (2:15), I bought a tiny one with 20 crappy keys and it can only play two notes at the time but I've had tons of fun with it, albeit not really in a music production sense. Great on festivals or parties... I'm also curious as to who wrote all those demos on the hundreds of crappy keyboards that were ever made...
you see i really dig a lot of those cheesy sounding synths, its why i own like so many keyboards also to anyone who uses turn tables, theres a pair of numark TT1610's for £30 near me, but neither of them have the cartridge/needle, and one of them is missing the felt cover and clip, so i have two questions; Is it worth picking them up? Can i use the cartridge/needle from "my" record player on either of them? I was looking into it and replacement cartdriges are like upwards of £20 each, and i dont really want to splash a lot of cash in one go, nor do i want to spend money, only to have them gather dust for the forseeable future gumtree listing for more deets
shhhhhh no one needs to know about that but seriously thats fucking annoying and I don't know why they haven't fixed that yet or made a workaround, it can be rarely useful but usually is just a pain
Haha. I actually really dig the way FL handles automation clips. Being able to move them around and loop them and slip edit and all that is REALLY handy. I love more things about Ableton for sure, but I do miss FL's automation system.
Either I am uninformed or setting automation values to a specific value is a bitch (e.g. tempo), one of the few things that irk me in Ableton.
Either I am uninformed or setting automation values to a specific value is a bitch (e.g. tempo), one of the few things that irk me in Ableton.
Hold cmd while you're dragging the point and you get much finer adjustment just like you do when you adjust anything else that's part of the native ableton UI :)
You can do that or get a cheap midi keyboard (*cough* launchkey series *cough*) that has tons of knobs and sliders that make automation so much easier. And you get two great vst's including a bass station VST :D I'm completely sold on the Jupiter 50 since it does everything I want in a keyboard but its going to be months until I can afford it and I really want its sexy Roland strings and great piano sounds now damnit :v
If anyone was ever interested in Pro Tools or just wanted to try it out, you can opt in for the free versions download here Also, isn't the collab album supposed to be out today?
those of you with nice instruments in dorms, how do you secure them? I have a pretty nice Gibson electric that I want to be able to take with me to my dorms but I also don't want to lose an instrument that cost over a grand. I was looking at locking cases + a bike lock with a built-in alarm to attach it to a bedpost but I'm not sure.

Is college far from home? if its not, see how the atmosphere is around your roommates. I trusted mine and didn't worry about things being stolen, and we had our cluster locked door and our room locked door so I could hide things just fine. Otherwise, as long as you have a lockable case I'd think you'd be fine. Might be able to register it with campus PD too.

You might suck at the beginning, you might be great, the only way to learn is to just do it though. If you don't want to go to clubs just yet you can always play in front of your friends :( And playing in front of an audience is just so much fun, the only thing that sucks is that my band members are nowhere near as open to the idea of playing live as I am even though they say they want to try and make music for a living. I live in Sweden though so the dorms arent particulary big and you usually know the people who live in the dorm with you.

I live in Sweden though so the dorms arent particulary big and you usually know the people who live in the dorm with you.
I had written a ton of pointless overly verbose shit but I'll try to sum it up- I'm about take my first real engineering classes and present my first bits of engineering research work. I'm also about to take my first music composition classes. Both of these are open to non-majors, but if I want to go further in either field I have to commit to one or the other to take more classes. In both cases, the sort of stuff I enjoy doesn't have the best job prospects. Engineering has more fallback options that can pay loads more than music stuff (80k starting salary for aero engineers here in WA), but money isn't what I'm worried about. I like music in general, and engineering research. Both have similar common job prospects, usually in academia. Engineering PhD's commonly end up teaching, like many music comp majors, and doing small research/composition jobs on the side. Making it big is rare, either performing/composing or leading research at top R&D facilities. So for me I'm in a rush to see how far I can go in both categories. I'm the youngest member of my engineering research team and have more of a leg-up in that category, but the conventional classwork and rigors get me and I have terrible math and physics class grades despite being good at actual engineering (I think...). Music would be fun and just as much work, but I feel I have a lot of catching up to do. Also, in order to audition I sorta need an instrument, but for composition classes I REALLY need an instrument. And I just can't afford one, dorm price increase this year (I upgraded from shittiest dorm) are getting me and its too late to cancel, and I'm tired of having my parents pay for everything and spoil me so I really don't want to ask them for help. And I'd feel bad doing that, and my Dad would not approve much of me going this far into music. I've got shit to think about, but for now I'm just playing music and fiddling around with writing more chord progressions with and without inversions. Creative avoidance, yay! [editline]3rd August 2015[/editline] I feel weird, like I shouldn't be doing this. What kind of Engineer writes and composes music and is as into creativity as I am? (I used to write short stories when bored in english classes). But at the same time, what kind of true, good, musician has this kind of mind? I'm really mechanically minded and want to know how everything works. And its only recently that I've even been able to do music stuff, whereas my whole life I've been the kid taking things apart and barely putting them back together. [editline]3rd August 2015[/editline] Sorta sounds like I'm bragging there, not my intention. I'm still obviously not a very good musician, and considering I barely passed my prereq math/physics courses either I'm not the best engineer either. So what the fuck am I, its sorta hard to be a sophomore in college and have the entire vision of my life as an engineer all fucked up and tossed around
The beautiful thing about music is that there's no right or wrong way to do anything, there's only if you do it or dont.
Does anybody have a solid understanding of how to use Sytrus on FL studio? If so, does anybody have any tracks in which they use Sytrus? I have a basic idea of how to use it but I'm not really good at innovating and making good patches with it.

Not sure if that helps, but unless u wanna go from presets or something then I dunno, maybe learn the basics of a synth first?
