thanks for all that feedback 001, Part 2 isn't really very ambient nor was it meant to be that, reptition is just something i really enjoy using in songwriting, Part 1 is the ambient part seems you're more into classical, which is more or less the opposite of that, i can definitely understand if you don't like that style i can see you're well versed in the technical side of music, you're using a lot of phrases and stuff i dont really understand For an example "without the synth F below it to give it a tonal centre, it sounds rather unsupported and free-floating", i don't really know what you mean here, unsupported and free-floating is what i'm striving for with the guitars at that point to contrast the heavy use of percussion, plus to really bring the heavy rhythmic sense and free-floating feel together with the reintroduction of the motif after the drone section the harshness and unpleasantness is what the noise towards the end is supposed to achieve, so i guess that worked then there's a lot of parts of this feedback where i don't really understand the criticism, especially when you're talking about stuff like the overtones of cymbals and their unrecognisability or the tonal texture of claves very in-depth regardless, this would definitely help if I was writing a classical piece drums are a mish-mash of various eastern and far-eastern drums that i found on my electronic drumset
The 'synth F' just meant the note played by the synthesizer underneath the guitars. Without that note, you can't really tell if the guitar is playing in a major key or minor key or really any key at all. When you add that note in, it suddenly collapses the ambiguity and makes it sound more 'normal'. The thing about the cymbals... When you play a note on an instrument, it has a series of overtones: the lowest frequency (the note being played), the frequency 2x above, 3x, 4x, etc. How strong each of these frequencies are makes up the unique sound of that instrument: its tone colour. When you strike cymbals, you create a confusion of overtones: the frequencies of a cymbal show no pattern (there is no 2x, 3x, 4x, etc; it's just a mass of a bunch of frequencies that the ear cannot find the exact pitch). However, the cymbal does create a range of frequencies. When you shift these down, it doesn't sound like a cymbal anymore because the high frequencies that make it sound like a cymbal has now been shifted downwards.
<Violin
Anyway, I'm trying to say that because that clump of colour near the top of the Cymbal graph becomes shifted downwards, it doesn't really sound like a proper cymbal anymore. When the frequencies get pushed downwards, there's a gap at the very top that essentially 'caps off' the frequency range which isn't there on a normal cymbal. I think that the cymbal, once shifted downwards, sounds a bit silly perhaps even comedic. The thing about the claves is that it sounds far above the rest of the percussion instruments. However, the claves sound out a more noticeable pitch than the rest of the percussion instruments; that is to say, their spectrum is more organized like a violin's and less chaotic than a cymbal's. This makes the instrument stick out in the crowd because it almost sounds like it's playing a note. I think it gives a jingle to the percussion.

The 'Synth F' is just the note played under the motif. (The motif sounds like C# - D - C# - B, the lower note sounding like an F#). All of that 'tonal grounding' and stuff is all in music theory and harmony. Essentially what that's all about is: notes played together have effects on each other, and that varies wildly depending on the interval (distance between notes) and other notes being played. But essentially what I'm trying to say is that I think the chord itself sounds less free-floating when the lower note comes in right at 4m 48s. In contrast, in something crazy like Schoenberg, there is no tonal centre; it's atonal. It might be a bit uneasy to listen to if you're not familiar with the style because it's all sort-of free-floating.

Oh, and one more thing. For something really eerie, I think there could be more separation between bass and treble (like in horror soundtracks, there typically tends to be a super-low ominous bass and violins shrieking at the top of their range, perhaps with only a waterphone covering the range in between).
Yeah i forgot to put it in the OP. Magbe if a mod is feeling kind they will change it if someone messages them

Fuck I really want to learn how people make shit like this https://soundcloud.com/biohannya/weyheyhey-little-batty-foo-foo-biohannya-edit Like holy fuck how do those drums sound so good??

And the usual EQ and compression. EDIT: Listened a bit more. The glitchy bits are probably done with a plugin rather than by hand.

Are there any goto sample packs you guys use? I have the VEC1,2,3/VEH stuff and there's also a big vintage drum synth pack out there with all the classics (808, etc). They're okay but I feel there's better things out there.
It's been over 6 months since I've done a thing
This is really catchy. One thing I'd do is turn up the snare sound, or turn down everything else, it's harder to hear, and the bass line and cymbals seems to overshadow it IMO Oh, and I took peoples advice on my soloing, like the shift in timbre, changing up usage of low notes, and more usage of more harmonic intervals like 3rds, rather than 5ths and octaves, and change up of the shredding Ab minor part. I couldn't find any use of arpeggios, unfortunately. I'm gonna still try to find more room for shot scale runs. I used more high frets, and brightened up my tone. I feel as if it segues properly into the main part now. Still, this is a work in progress, and I didn't apply enough style; hammer-ons and bends, as well as blend it into the mix better. I just played over it. What do you all think?

What's your guys opinion on Teenage Engineering's OP-1? It looks really neat IMO. It's currently on massdrop.
What's your guys opinion on Teenage Engineering's OP-1? It looks really neat IMO. It's currently on massdrop.
I'm looking at the demo. Ehhhhh....... Sure, it seems to be able to do a lot of stuff but establishing that basic beat is something you can easily do on a chiptracker like OpenMPT. I'm not very familiar with other aspects of not-quite-chiptune music (electro), but I've heard of stuff from DAW's that essentially can do this exact same thing. The 2-octave keyboard is rather limiting, but considering it's a compact synth I'm not surprised. I'd think it'd be limited by samples but it says that you can transfer samples from your computer directly into that (but that begs the question: where do you get those samples?) The small size seems to be more of a niche than of use; during use, it seemed that it was bordering on being awkward with fingerings, but it's what makes it portable. Those knobs don't seem like they'd easily fit into a pocket, and might make for some awkward space management in a backpack if they turn out fragile. What's most outrageous to me is the price tag: 720$ (suggested retail price of 1000$?). Honestly, I think you'd be much better off getting a DAW and a MIDI controller. A DAW, Midi controller, and some sample libraries can go much further than this IMO. To put that 720$ or 1000$ in perspective: Sibelius 7.5 is 600$. Sibelius is one of the best music notation programs that professional classical musicians use. East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra Gold is 250$. That's one of the top classical instrument sample libraries out there. Platinum Complete edition is 500$ but that's if you're crazy into music and want 24bit and 3 mic positions. A midi controller (5 octaves): Acorn Masterkey 61, 100$. FL studio: Well, seems to be from 100$ to 900$ with all the plugins. Ableton Live: 100$ to 750$ depending on what you get So i think it's one of those expensive niche products that you go and get to show off to your friends, not really something you'd use for utility. There's just so many other things out there that are better than it in other aspects, but the one thing that this has over all the others is portability. And honestly, I wouldn't use that to input notes. 720$ is a bit much for a 2 octave midi controller :v:
Anyone need field recordings of things in the city of Nashville? I got my handy recorder, and it can record some quality stuff. Hit me up if you ever need any cityscape stuff, or misc sounds.

so hey guys, hear me out here i was just performing my daily walk and something crossed my mind why dont we have fun little challenges here in the musician's gig room? so i figured it could be a fun and productive way to step outside your comfort zone as a musician my idea is that every entree will give a theme and a genre, which will then be randomised so everyone gets one random genre and one random theme what do you guys think? i'd be willing to be the host and do behind the scenes stuff we'd have the same rules as the collab albums, 1 entry per user and feedback from entrees

On a more musicians gig room topic, I've had a lot of luck with music stuff lately. I've been trying to find new people to collaborate with, now I have an awesome singer I'm hoping to do more snoop dogg - to - jazz tracks with, and I'm writing some beats for an austrian rapper. On top of that finally got a midi keyboard so I can finally put years of piano to use!
I just finished building my spectral synthesis ensemble for Reaktor. It should be polished and up on the Native Instruments site in a few days.

For example if a theme/genre is "dubstep remix of a chicken", that leaves very little room for the non-producers to participate, and I would like them in the competition too (I'll be honest, I say this partially because I consider myself not really a producer and I would like to enter the competition too :v:, but there's the orchestra/arrangement dude too ). So somehow we should have some restriction to the genre/theme submissions so it doesn't depend too much on how you would compose/execute said submission, IMHO.
