How come people are so hostile when asking for somebody to master their shit? Every time I see pics of this kind of thing, they're always like "you better master my 42 septillion-track album in 1 hour or you're gonna be on a slab soon, cunt"

Great as always, is that a recorded a piano or is that all done in a DAW because that sounds amazing
One of my favorite things I've heard in here... Sound libraries are sounding so good it's unreal. My only issue with the song is that it's too short.

It's really good man, the vocals coming in work really well. Top notch percussion man.

Youtube takes years to upload stuff and I don't want to spend my time constantly uploading WIPs and taking them down for newer WIPs whilst slowing down my Internet speed.

I really liked the first one, and the second one too but it felt to me like there was too much going on at the same time in the second one, otherwise good job.
Here's something I'm working on atm, it's a rough mix but it's mostly the chord progression and the probably very cheesy and unoriginal lyrics (in the description) I could use some feedback on, I'm trying to sing to it but since I wrote it yesterday I haven't really nailed a melody that works so there are no vocals on it.

there's a loose tame impala vibe but something about the track's vibe also reminds me of 90's DVD music, maybe the scale being used? nothing really wrong with that though
i'm not listening through my monitors right now but it sounds like there might be something causing unwanted muddiness in your low end, but it's hard to identify which signal's the source of it
it's got character to it too, i like that
maybe a little kick distortion or something too. it's got that 808 throatiness to it but yet again, personal preference
Has a really nice trance feel to it overall. Piano might have come in a bit early though, also the intro feels like it's building up to something bigger than just that kind of dubsteppy bit. I also really like the part that starts at 1:15. It also sounds like it's a buildup to something though, it was a bit disappointing to hear the song just slowly end from there instead of moving into another chorus or something like that.
Tried making another drum and bass song in the style of Unreal Tournament
some parts feel a little flatter than others, eg around 1.14 feels like it's got quite a strong groove, frequencies are being filled out nicely, but then around like 2.40ish i'd recommend using a pad or some other kind of subtle background noise just to give your mix that extra little bit of weight and to avoid the ears going through that uncanny valley 'is that complete silence' effect that i've never known what to call it :v:

here's a track I've been working on, normally i write/produce reggae but i challenged myself to do something completely different. I was shooting for a savant/justice/generally kinda EDM vibe but I'm not sure if it hits that mark or not

The synth that plays chords sounds very basic and feels a bit generic but it gets better at 1:50 when it kinda gets drowned out by the distorted synth playing one note at a time. Maybe try adding some generous vibrato to the basic synth and/or chorus would help. The drums are fantastic and the bass has just the right amount of funk to it. All in all I really dig it, it's super catchy.
aw crap i accidentally edited and removed my reply to your feedback
Basically what I said was the muddy low end is cause of the sub bass i added in order to give the lower ends a bit of a boost, but I'm gonna tone it down a bit and play with the equalizer and gating a bit more to get rid of it. I am going for a bit of a cheesy pop sound so you're p much head on when you say it reminds you of 90s dvd music. Also i have a lopass filter on the kick that I forgot to turn off, I'm gonna use it to have the kick build up slowly in the beginning. Also gotta redo the snare completely. It's far from done, thanks for your input!

yeah, I think during the process of mixing I became so used to that basic sound that I got too scared to do anything with it for fear of cocking up the rest of the mix. i think you're right about adding a subtle touch to de-boringify it :v:
i'd attenuate some of the low end sub bass but i'd avoid cutting it because it does give a nice effect, it's just a bit strong right now :v:
and yeah, you've got the vibe you're going for nailed in that case. sounds like a cool idea for getting around how mundane a kick pattern can end up being too

I found a kick that has a delay bandpassed with the bandpassed on a slow lfo produces neat effects fkr breaking the monotony of kicks in track intros
I think I need to focus more on melodies and riffs than I currently do to get punchier tunes going
I think I need to focus more on melodies and riffs than I currently do to get punchier tunes going
Maybe, your sound and synth design is top notch. Seems you spent a year or so building to that though, so be ready for melodies to take a while too. The fact that you mentioned you've been playing piano and have been around for music for a while gives you a headtsrat though, especially compared to someone like me who is just getting started in music, period.
I got paid enough today to afford a JD Xi off eBay hold me back I want it
I can do melodies just fine, it's just that I'm an improviser and so my difficulties - with all parts of music, melodies, chord progressions, rhythm, etc - is hard to translate into composing music, and when I compose I kinda don't really make my music based on melodies I have in my head which I should start doing more.

It kinda sucks cause I used to have an upright piano and a smaller grand piano at the house we used to live at, but when we moved we couldn't bring them so they were thrown away and I don't have a piano at home so I can't play when I want to, for the most part I don't mind but at times when I really get in the mood to just play some piano it blows.
So I'm starting studying Musicology in the University of Oslo, and I had somewhat of a nerdgasm when I saw their studios.
Recording rooms, big-ass mixer, Pro Tools, analog compressor, analog equalizer.
I will have access to that in a matter of a year or two. Can't wait to make tracks in it.

geogzm, I have no idea how you just learned to compress because your stuff is fantastic.
Also paindoc, I'm always amazed by your stuff, the things you do is so cool I'm always excited to hear what you're making.
I wish I could give you guys more feedback on what you do, cause its great, but I'm just learning how to do stuff too and am very new to producing music. I know I have a good ear for music, and I can tell that you guys do too - you probably even have better ears, it's just hard to tell how much better someone is -, so I just wanna say that I can tell that you guys are fantastic at the stuff you do and I hope you get far cause I really dig the stuff you guys make.

i'm still learning and i'll still give feedback based on what i think as a listener but if there are any technical elements i can make a comment on i will, like, i'm still getting used to what different frequency bands sound like but i'll still make a rough recommendation for around where somebody should make a cut or a boost based on how i'm hearing it
i've been writing reggae for three years and i've done production before, but only on a "let's crack open a DAW and learn nothing" basis to put it one way. i've done light EQ and applied presets to lots of things but i've only actually started learning to produce as a focused thing in the past month because of how terrible my college was and i've learned a LOT more than i did throughout that whole year. other courses are probably good, i was just given a washed up producer who was angry at the world and didn't care for the course at all, you could just tell he was a fish out of water teaching to cover his rent and it was really depressing for us all lol
[editline]15th August 2015[/editline]
the track i posted in here last is the first piece of EDM i've produced. i sequenced a few attempts at electro-house/synthwave a while back but that was genuinely just unmixed shit with a maximizer thrown on it because prior to the past month, i didn't know jack-shit about processing

I really like this. It reminds me of a class sidescroller from the 90s and I love it. My gripe would be that it takes a bit to get interesting, the first minute is too repetitive and can be shortened imo. Also once the main stuff comes in after that first minute you can lower the piano down a bit since it's already engraved in our heads, haha. Otherwise it's very nice, I love this :)

I think it hits the mark just fine! I love french house and that kind of stuff, and this was great. You brought all the elements in nicely, and that other synth building in at 2m or so was neat. Bassline was suitably funky, and that detuned saw synth fit right in. Maybe consider boosting the volume on that a bit, or giving it a bit more punch by either layering it with a copy of itself or really getting crazy with distortion. Might produce neat effects, idunno. Neat track though!

This is pretty neat! Agree with Redbadger though, maybe a bit too lengthy. Neat video game vibe though, but I would also consider dropping the piano a bit and maybe adding an effect or two to either the percussion or some of the other instruments, to give it a touch more variety and motion. Delays and a bit of panning might work, and you could even try seeing what a flanger does to your piano or pads maybe?
So turns out that when I get drunk I like to make half decent 8 bar loops. Also, geogzm have you tried playing with dub delay racks? Can make for hella neat effects for all kinds of music that use percussion in general, but with your reggae background I'd love to see what you could do with it.
Here's that combined chord and melody thing I was talking about, was sorta playing around with trying to make a tropical house style progression with the instruments to fit. I was dumb (and drunk) so I didn't save it though. Also, I may have borrowed part of the chords from the Veldt by deadmau5 and the seesaw type melody sound from sad machine by porter. Still, tearing apart famous melodies was damn educational.
https://soundcloud.com/nofuchsgiven/melody-2-something-boogaloo/s-SWvh1
Also a little orchestra thing I made after having way too much fun setting up my sample library. Played unrealistically, but I still had fun making it and am hoping to use it in something soon
https://soundcloud.com/nofuchsgiven/strings/s-eXkXB
I also made two half decent drumlines:
https://soundcloud.com/nofuchsgiven/forgotten-drunk-drums/s-nS2Bx
https://soundcloud.com/nofuchsgiven/what-is-this/s-FBdG9
and my current project involves vocals that I'm going to distort even more. Delay is obnoxious, but I'm going to hook it to a button I have on my launchkey that opens the delay when pressed and closes when released so I can play with doig it to single key words and stuff:
https://soundcloud.com/nofuchsgiven/vocals-fixd/s-8z4zM
This project has me hella excited (heavily inspired by Neon by Televisor and Crime Scanner by Irving Force) and I plan to try to zerg most of this tonight, so going offline and focusing now. Also sorta finished two tracks but leaving those unreleased, finished that synthwave draft from ages ago but not happy with how it turned out. And transmissions was an educational experience that sorta ran into a creative deadend, unfortunately. Oh well! Time to work on this new song that I DO hope to release and show off. And get critiqued :D

Oh, thanks for this complement by the way. I wish I had your synth design abilities as well... I get really into trying to tell stories with my tracks, since most of the time I daydream I'm thinking of some story and animating it and scoring it in my head. Atmosphere is big in those, so I love playing with recordings of real world FX and trying to use those to give my tracks white noise that also sets a tone and mood. This complement coming from you really means a lot though, so thank you <3
and please keep doing what you're doing its neat and I love your signature sound already and can't wait to see you improve and take it further
The first tune reminds me a lot of something that would play in a Final Fantasy game except its got more of a catchy/pop musicish vibe to it it sucks that you didnt save you stupid drunk omg rip potential song
The second one kinda also gives me the same FF/JRPG feeling (which is a good thing btw cause JRPG music is generally really creative and good), playing around with strings is really fun.
That first drum beat is really good by the way and I can imagine some chill 80s synths or disco guitar playing on top of it. Nice buildup too.
The second "drum" beat caught me offguard and I almost started laughing, I thought it was going to build up to something dramatic but then it just changes vibe completely and sounds like something you could hear in a kid cartoon show, which also isnt a bad thing at all.
For the voice thing, not sure exactly what you're going for, the delay sounds very spacey and I feel like - depending on your vision - distorting it or/and adding some noise to it to make it sound rougher could help make it sound less artificially smooth sounding if that makes sense.

They both have a bit of your signature sound, but only in terms of really rich synths. First one is nice, and I like the sneaky arpeggio in the background. Kick and subbass sound come in nicely, and the percussion fits right in. Perfect BG music if you ask me.
Adore the second one. Picking up an eclectic mix of tropical house and synthwave vibes, got that synthwave synth sound but a bit of tropical sounding flute, and that percussion is totally tropical. Love this one! The hats sound a bit like maybe they were highpassed too aggressively? I dunno, I still like both mini songs too much to hate on them. Or even criticize very well... Both genres are sorta my favorites
And I would think staying in key for the majority of the soundtrack would make sense, but borrowing chords or melodies from other keys at points should be fine as long as it all still harmonizes well.
Finished intro and outro to my thing I was working on last night. Very little done in terms of sound design, and still working on melody and chords. Also redoing percussion, not quite happy with how it turned out. Kick is new and fix'd, but rest need work. Snare feels almost TOO punchy and needs more hiss I think. More percussion and variety in general is on the way. Thoroughly satisfied with Outro though, just don't look too deep into how I got the explosion sound...
https://soundcloud.com/nofuchsgiven/intro/s-WLFh6
https://soundcloud.com/nofuchsgiven/outro/s-AeBg0
holy crap that sounds awesome, I can't fucking wait to hear the tune itself, you've probably thought about it already since you said you haven't done much in terms of sound design but you should turn down the volume of the rain a little in my opinion
For some reason, the intro gave me a Starcraft vibe, which is great cause the Starcraft 1 soundtrack is one of my favourite soundtracks of all time

Love all of them! They all seem to fit together nicely. Have a fun puzzle "theme" or "feeling" I guess, reminds me of peggle.
I have been trying to practice my ability ot just play piano lately, and read sheet music. But I've been having tons of fun just jamming and playing in general, and even recorded the midi of me earlier:
https://soundcloud.com/nofuchsgiven/piano-piano-oh-god-my-fingers/s-VaYE0
no post processing except reverb and delay, didn't edit the midi except to cut any really bad missed notes I hit. I was trying to figure out why some songs seem ot flow so nice between chords, when I realized arpegiatting some of the notes to get up or down can work really well. And that playing with velocity as much as you can can add so much nice texture.
I dunno, I thought it sounded sorta nice. I'm just more amazed how much you can do with a few triads and seventh chords in only the major scale. And now I really want a better and bigger keyboard
I made a cover of this:

i'm singing and playing drums, my friend is on guitar
this is my first time seriously singing anything, i need to work on my vocal power and confidence
Alright bumping with a sneak peak at the first four songs I've made (so far) for the puzzle game I'm making music for.

Let me know if there is something that you think could be different or doesnt work very well.
You pretty much nailed it, I think. Yesterday, I listened to the last couple of tracks you posted, and (without reading the rest of the post, of course) my first thought was that they should be in a puzzle game. All of them are real clean as well, nicely mixed and all that. If there's one thing I'd suggest though, it's some subtle reverb on the snares in the second & last tracks.

My headphones are totaled now. I'm trying to produce, alternating between some weak ass earbuds & some weak ass speakers, so please tell me whether this sounds alright or if it's really shit & hurts your ears.
Due to unforseen costs and unfortunate events turns out I will not be able to afford a nicer keyboard after work this summer.
Which is not the end of the world but it was a large part of the reason why I looked forward to going to work. And now the irony is that this makes me sad, so I'm playing piano to feel better ._.
Was going for FA-08, full scale keyboard and nice action plus the access to Integra-7 axial libraries AND FA-08 Axial libraries gave me tons of flexibility. but oh well. Might pick up a JD-Xi since its possible I could maybe afford that but idk even on that

Monitors and headphones can really help, but its more important that you understand the weakness of your system. If you know specific ranges or areas in which your gear lets you down, its easier to work around that. I know for a fact my headphones have flat mids and overdriven basses, but a very wide range. So I try to remember that.

Yeah, it's just difficult to work with what I'm not used to, I guess, and I can't replace my headphones until October. I'm just hoping somebody can tell me whether anything sounds too loud/sharp/whatever, since I can't quite tell at the moment. At the very least, listening to my other tracks on different speakers and shit gave me an idea of how worn out my headphones really were though. A lot of my tracks have really sharp & loud snares, but I couldn't even tell until recently.
I know the bass is weak and the 2000hz area is pretty sharp on the speakers I'm using for now, so if anyone wants to let me know if the bass, kick and snare in the track I posted are alright, I'd appreciate that.

Sounds alright on my Sennheiser HD419 headphones. Maybe a bit more high-end would be good. I think a bit of multiband compression would be a good idea as well. The track itself is pretty sweet, I like the bass and the powerful drums. The flute and (what sounds like a) Chinese instrument are pretty unique.
Here's a house track I started working on yesterday and finished today. I haven't used trompets before but they work pretty well I think. The chords were made by improvising on the keyboard and finding what sounded good.

I don't really have any clue how to give feedback other than just stating my opinion which is by no means professional. I find the bass a little too distorted for my taste and it kinda distracts you from the rest of the sounds, mostly at the end, and the trumpets a tad too loud than the rest of the sounds. But it's a pretty solid track.
This is my most recent track. I was trying to go for a '90s feel, so there aren't many high-ends. However that's no reason for my lack of mastering skills.
I still consider myself a noob, I've only been producing for two years.
