The Musician's Gig Room Chat V1 - Songwriting and Sound Design for all!
4,109 replies, posted
so ive hopefully got into a music tech course at college, tomorrow im heading off with a mate to work on some instrumentals and lyrics for his mixtape, some time next week im playing bass with some friends from my last school, and at some point in the near future the old band is planning on getting back together. I'm really digging the influx of music projects that ive got as of late, ill be posting here a lot more often with actual content hopefully!
A.N.A is such a good synth. I'm surprised I've barely seen anyone use it.
Sounds alright on my Sennheiser HD419 headphones. Maybe a bit more high-end would be good. I think a bit of multiband compression would be a good idea as well. The track itself is pretty sweet, I like the bass and the powerful drums. The flute and (what sounds like a) Chinese instrument are pretty unique.
Here's a house track I started working on yesterday and finished today. I haven't used trompets before but they work pretty well I think. The chords were made by improvising on the keyboard and finding what sounded good.

Just going to give a quick reply.
The low end of those trumpets sound preeeetty low. I know it's not really so much of a problem since you're synthesizing and not getting players to play it, but I'm just going to say that that's REALLY low on trumpet. Most players will have trouble getting the low end to sound as resonant and strong as that.
Personally I think you can mess around with other instruments that are very similar to the trumpet.
The trumpet is the brightest of the brass because it's the most cylindrical. The cornet is a little more round and not as bright, the flugelhorn is even darker. Of course, the most rounded would be the french horn, but that's almost an entire style change.
For the lower bits, the trombone could possibly substitute for the trumpets, but it has an 'oily' tone which I'm not sure if it's what you want.
Bass trumpets do exist. Just... have fun trying to find samples of them if you're looking to use them.
Anyway these are just things I've learnt from orchestration. Again, I doubt that you'll really need this because you're using a synthesizer.
A.N.A is such a good synth. I'm surprised I've barely seen anyone use it.
I liked it when I was using it during the trial, Considering picking it up since it was pretty good for me.
I don't really have any clue how to give feedback other than just stating my opinion which is by no means professional. I find the bass a little too distorted for my taste and it kinda distracts you from the rest of the sounds, mostly at the end, and the trumpets a tad too loud than the rest of the sounds. But it's a pretty solid track.
This is my most recent track. I was trying to go for a '90s feel, so there aren't many high-ends. However that's no reason for my lack of mastering skills.
I still consider myself a noob, I've only been producing for two years.
Firstly:
I feel like the drums are too loud compared to the melody. Especially the bass drum.
Or you could just make the melody louder.
Ok. I feel like something is off with the drumming. I don't really know what it is, but it doesn't seem to be very 90's to me. I do have to say that I don't have very much experience with music of that style in the first place so take it with a grain of salt.
The tempo changes are... bizarre to me. Again, it might have to do with me not knowing 1990's music but I feel like it's a bit too frequent.

You have some really good riffs and grooves, I especialy like 1:30-1:45, that's a pretty clean and well stereoized lead which complemented the riff very well, so keep that up. However, the pieces of your track are all there, but it feels like they don't quite fit together correctly. The transitions sound like someone is just skipping to the next song on their iPod, it breaks the flow, and it also feels like somehow some points are off beat, and if that was a style you were going for, then I'm all for it, you be you. It just bothers my taste. Also, some stuff could use some good reverb and compression, that would really help your sound be much more present and larger.
And don't sell yourself so short! If you're sharing a track, be confident about it. If you set the bar low by sayin stuff like "eh im a noob it's not that good", people will listen to the track with their own expectations lowered. Your music is an expression of your inner self in some way, so take pride in your work!
Also, would anyone be interested in collaborating on building a track with me? I've only ever done one collaboration and I'd love to be able to work with the wide diversity of musical styles that everybody has on this thread
Recently I've finished a track that I think came out very well, I would like to know what the people on here think. It's a progressive house themed track, cuz progressive house is my favorite genre.

Very headbob-y and stylish, I like the ambiance and just the general feel to it. It's a little too soft for my tastes, but that's just me.
It's really nice.

When I started this track, I was planning on making something generic instead of experimenting on every single song I make, and I really like how it turned out. tbh none of my other songs compare.
It's house/dubstep. If anyone can guess the sample in the middle, you get 2 thumbs up.

Really cool piece dude. I really liked the beginning samples of the crowd and the speaker. That was cool. Where did you get those at???

I thought it was okay. Had a pretty good feel to it. What it really lacks is variety in the chord progression. It was a bit too repetitive for me.

Working on a new thing. Trying to give a epic evil feel to it. I think its coming along pretty nicely. I probably need to fix some of the volume issues with the drums as I think they get a bit too loud in one part. Its going to be longer I just got tried and a need a break from it.

thanks, man. It's actually one of Mussolini's speeches with a band pass filter, very wet reverb, and some delay to give it that courtyard echoe sound.
Also, that's a really cool score you have going there. If I didn't know any better, I would've thought it was straight out of a hollywood movie. Keep that up dude
You pretty much nailed it, I think. Yesterday, I listened to the last couple of tracks you posted, and (without reading the rest of the post, of course) my first thought was that they should be in a puzzle game. All of them are real clean as well, nicely mixed and all that. If there's one thing I'd suggest though, it's some subtle reverb on the snares in the second & last tracks.

I finished part 2 of something before part 1 for an album thing.

Hey guys, I think the next collab album (nr 13) should be started now, and then we'll release it to the 13th of december
That means I'll be able to more properly organize the album and more people might be more inclined to join in? :)

i'm up for it as always

starts off a bit uninteresting, but it does improve drastically with the introduction of the bigger synths
as has been mentioned earlier, the problem comes with the repetitiveness, the melody or chord progression never really change (at least to any notable degree)
still, you definitely have something promising here, it just needs more variety

as always, fantastic work, very soundtracky feel and sound
i love the very atonal choir at the start, i've always had a huge soft spot for stuff like that
sound like the music that would happen in a resident evil game or an RPG when the final boss transforms into its final form
no real complaints, though i feel it could use some more unconvential instruments if you plan on extending it further
https://soundcloud.com/ghille556/b-the-other-side/s-3BJU2
not quite sure where you're going with this, it sounds nice but it has no progression until the outro
it could work as the last track to an album or something, but standalone it's very weak since it never actually goes anywhere
there's no ups or downs, intense or calm moments, just a loop that eventually slowly fades out
it's a nice loop, but if you want it to stand up on itself, you need something more than just that
____________
so here's a song (well, an intro and a song) i made today, noisey experimental rock kinda stuff
i'm getting more and more used to using real instruments and samples, though i still really suck at playing

the ending is a placeholder, since the album its on will be a continous whole, so the song doesn't actually have an ending
I forgot to mention it was the last track off the album. Basically it's the second part of a track and everything was made in reverse, it was fun to make in the simple fact my intro was my outro and my outro was my intro.
I think the guitar was done quite well in your track, the only thing that really bugs me about the track itself is the clap, but I'm not really familiar or into the genre itself so that could be why.

I wanna revive the covers album that I started last year but I feel it will be useless to do so. :(
-snip-
Hey fp, long time no see.
So i finally found people to jam with, but ofcourse theyve chosen a song i cant find any tabs to.
I've tried playing it while listening to it, but it just doesnt sound well, so i thought of you guys. Is there anyone in here who would give it a listen and give a suggestion(in tabs pls)?
Song: Annie Lennox: I put a spell on you
I really want to start playing guitar again.
I used to get lessons, had a fantastic teacher who taught me heaps of shit (scales, improv, inspired me)
He's gone now and I'll be teaching myself this time round
How is the best way to go about this?
Also I want a heavier sound. I really want to buy a 7 string after hearing deftones' new album, but is that money better spent on a new amp?
At the moment my gear consists of my epi SG400

And a roland cube 15x
TLDR: New amp first or new guitar
gonna have to get my epi re set up for use anyway it's been in storage for years and I didn't loosen the strings so the neck is straight as a bullet
i'd say new amp or effects pedal, you don't need a seventh string to sound heavy
I want it for improv/extended range reasons as well
I already have an effects thing
I want it for improv/extended range reasons as well

well i guess the 7-string guitar could be handy then
i dont even own an amp myself
Hey so I mentioned it before and nobody really replied, would anyone be interested in doing a collaborative project with me? Maybe even something as simple as one of us remixing one of the other's tracks. It's a great way to share followers and it's just fun to do. If anyone is interested, message me on soundcloud; soundcloud.com/thehoyticus

I would like to, but I hadn't replied because I've been busy with work and despite working week on/week off in my week off I'm headed home to house sit without much access to my software or hardware
Guys, came across this today
Roomate's friend is selling this, an ibanez RG7321FM 7 for $600 AUD negotiable.
Was thinking on haggling down to $500, or possible $550 if he seems chill.

I like the claps when they first come in but they seem to go on too log and become quite random. The sound design is good though and definitely very dark.

The chord plucks could use a bit more low end on them and maybe a bit less delay. I really like the atmospheric sound effects in the back. Personally I think the snare/clap could be more centered and then add a bit more percussive elements like hats and shakers that are panned.

Thanks for the critique, I didn't really spend a whole lot of time on that particular track.
I think your bass in your track could use some EQ boosting around the 40-50Hz range, and maybe a little bit higher BPM with some rolls between the kick and the snare. But the kick sounds really good, it's not overcompressed like I seem to hear in a lot of dnb stuff, but you can still hear it very well. Great intro, good overall energy to the song, I just hope it isn't finished, it's too short.
I've been asking around a lot; would you be interested in collaborating for a track? It's been a while since I've done one and it's always great to be able to incorporate different styles into a track that one person just wouldn't be able to do. Maybe you could remix one of my tracks or vice versa. Message me on Soundcloud if you're interested!
Also, this was the only attempt at dubstep I ever tried, I made it a few months ago for a school project, and it's somehow the most played track on my souncloud. It's a remix of a song by Louis Armstrong.

Making that track really gave me a profound respect for established professional dubstep artists. People might hate on it because it's like wub-wub call of duty montage brostep or something, but you have to appreciate the immense amount of extensive sound design and intuitive engineering that goes into making a track like this one.

I was wondering, why are solely jump up drum & bass producers so anal about their Soundcloud uploads? They're seldom longer than 1m30s and my guess is that they do this so their uploads can't be used at performances/parties (don't know if this is true). But why are they the majority? Why not other genres?
I think I'm going to win an auction for a stupid cheap JD-Xi :D
Decided to pick one up, financial situation all over the map but turns out I WILL have almost all my work money left over. I don't have any idea how much room I'll actually have in my dorm, so I'm not gonna buy a titanic 88 key anything until I know I can fit it. But the JD-Xi is so adaptable, cheap, and damn fun-looking that I can't resist picking one up.
I would like an XA but the used price of $1800 is a bit rough and the new price of $2400 is mental. Also working on that one synthwave/cyberpunk track still, routine of work fell by the wayside and I've been slacking but I'm on track again. I've been trying to pick up more lessons and do more formal playing but I will really try to finish more songs once this music theory course finishes and I finish the two genre specific bassgorilla courses I want to finish (also they're releasing a melodic dubstep track tutorial and I think it might actually be by Blackmill...)
So the jam went great! They where kind people(i've know 1 of them for a very long time), and we really clicked. We played 2 covers, and got quite a long jam session.
I've been listening to a lot of dubstep lately and it has inspired me to finally take a second stab at the genre. So here we go. Took me a while to finally get a good snare going for this sort of thing
