That video is fun :)
I totally got a disting too but forgot to list it because it's hiding behind cables haha. DPO is insane. I like a lot of dirty squelchy reese bass type sounds and DPO has been having an effortless time making those.
MI Clouds and Elements are on my short list too, but most places are out of stock on those right now (and I don't really need to spend more on modules just yet haha)
Definitely fun! I'm just really hyped to actually get my midi interface so I can get this integrated with my existing workflow a bit better :)
I've got a makenoise DPO and an intellijel Korgasmatron 2 (jaw dropping filter) in the case right now with a few utility modules, 4ms VCAM, makenoise wogglebug, intellijel quadra+expander. I'm waiting on a mutable instruments yarns (midi interface), mutable instruments braids and tides, a makenoise maths, and a couple mutable instruments shades (utility modules)
Wow! That's a lot versatility and stuff to play with. Some of those modules are really unique in timbre/effdct too
Flexibility and uniqueness were the top things I was looking for when I was shopping around. I've got a Virus TI2 and a Moog Sub 37 so I've got the basic subtractive synth thing covered quite well and wanted to go the west coast weirdness direction with this. I was a bit hesitant to drop the money for it but I'm glad I did now. I've been getting a bit bored of the classic subtractive synthesis thing, but after getting used to the moog and virus, going back to making patches on a computer screen kind of sucks. Computers are awesome and you can do a ton with them but there's something about the immediacy of having knobs for everything that makes it so much more fun to make patches, especially when you've got two parameters that effect eachother a bit like distortion and a filter and you're looking for a sweet spot.
The amount of open-endedness is amazing too. You can do some really weird shit with modulars. I used two envelopes together as an oscillator yesterday. Both set to super fast attack/decay with the end of cycle trigger from each one setting off the other envelope. Not very musical, and I couldn't have made it track pitch, but the fact that you can even do that is amazing to me haha

Yeah, I can totally understand that. Problem is that in my case I get so distracted playing with knobs and stuff I don't get any music made or anything else done, so that's why I'm hoping to scoop an Integra 7, Alexis 3632, Midiverb II, and a rack FM synth sometime before the end of the year... Tons of power but also easy to just dial in a preset and lay some notes down, then come back later and tweak like mad. Also want to try scoring projects more and stuff. And the Midiverb and Alesis comp together should allow me to get some awesome gated snare or reverb sounds for my synthwave projects, I hope.
[editline]8th September 2015[/editline]
An access virus rack would be nice too, since the desktops are so expensive but I haven't even seen any on eBay or Craigslist lately. My local shop has the jv 880 and Midiverb both for under $100 and I've been sorely tempted to buy them now
I think the bass drum gets a bit overbearing throughout the piece, takes too much attention away from the chime-y instrumentals. But hey, I'm not too big on hip-hop in general, so maybe this kind of production just isn't my cup of tea. I dig the lead section tho, especially the part at 2:45.
So here's something I did a few days ago. Took a break from searching the ever-elusive VST plugin-generated metal tone, and did something that was just pure fun; along the lines of psychedelic rock with a bit of a dance-y vibe to it. Comments and critique are welcome and greatly appreciated!

I really like how this one develops. In some ways it makes me think of some of the Hl2:Episode 2 soundtrack.
Did you use physical guitars or a virtual instrument for this?
Fuck I had been eyeing the QuBit Nebulae and decided to pass on it for now, but I just discovered that you can load custom csound or puredata programs in to it to completely change the function of the module...

You can do the same with Rolands AIRA modules apparently
Braids is sick, always wanted one of those, heard good things of the DPO too. Really wish I didn't have to sell my modular system when I fell on hard times... I'll probably get more modules again if I have the money in the future. I'd recommend having a look at the Disting module, it's a ton of usefulness for £100. So many functions and uses, plus it looks nice with the bi-colour LED jacks :v:
Here's a thing I made with when I still had my modular...

Is it doing the thing where it erases the whole post when you try to edit? That seems to happen from time to time

Thanks, actually I sometimes fiddle with writing soundtracks, did a few for a theater play way back.
Physical guitars, but the bass is sampled tho, with my current setup it's easier to get a decent sound with a sampled bass rather than a live one, they're a bitch to mix when recording directly through an interface.

I really like the simplicity in the first part of the piece, the bass synth has a really nice flow to it. The vocal parts reminded me of some of the stuff by Baths, which is a huge plus in my book.
Haven't opened up FL in about a week now, I like to take breaks cause it makes it feel so fresh when I come back and it's easier to get inspired and make good stuff.

I feel this could use a melody in the upper register, something minor pentatonic with lots of reverb. Nice sounds, perhaps a bit long winded (which could be fixed with a melody). The bass drum could perhaps pack a little bit more punch, it sounds a bit weak imho. Nice work nonetheless!

Spent the afternoon making a random psytrance thing (I actually don't know the genre and don't really care either, just playing around) with a few random samples from Youtube videos. I noticed that slicing a sample from Eartha Kitt and playing around with them resulted in a vague "I've Dope" thing being said, which I thought was appropriate for the genre :v: Hence the name. It also has a few Dutch samples from a hardcore festival, so yeah those might appear completely out of context to the non-Dutch speaking people.

On a more acoustic note, I managed to record two songs with my band (I'm sax), feedback not required (though welcome), just felt like posting it because I'm relatively happy with the result. There's some patchwork, there's some mistakes and the recording quality isn't great (we had two tracks only) but oh well...

No need to be a dick about it, I didn't read the OP, I assumed it was just like the old threads. I'm not good at giving feedback because everyone else is much more talented than I am.

That's a pretty dope track, love the beat on that
Even if you don't have any useful feedback, just showing that you've listened to something and commenting on wether you like it or not is enough really. It's not easy to give useful criticism, nobody is expecting you to write a detailed post really cause then only very few people would post here.
No need to be a dick about it
yeah dude, posting that rule under your track was pretty harsh of me

He wasn't being a dick tats our standard response to people who don't post feedback first

It's not bad, it's got a unique touch to it but it sounds very flat and there is very little variation in the rhythm, I would have liked to hear you move away from the 1 (2) 3 4 rhythm - 3 being silent - that you got going throughout the entire song. That's just my thoughts on it though.

Personally, I think a bunch of posts saying nothing more than "I like it" or "I don't like it" is worse than no feedback because it's just clutter. It doesn't take that long to pick something specific to comment on
I generally forget about this thread most of the time. No one responds to my criticisms or my music unless I post it outside of this thread. I just follow the many people I like in the thread on SoundCloud and like their tracks, but nothing ever comes from talking about it in here or sharing my stuff. (I legitimately enjoy a lot of Facepuncher's music, though.)

thread's a bit dead sometimes yeah, especially when it's genres that not a lot of people listen to, like my drone stuff
it's just an unfortunate side effect of a small amount of musicians being in the same place, everyone makes music and wants people to listen to their music but nobody wants to listen to and talk about other people's music in any way other than the minimum possible

Well yeah I guess it's not super hard to elaborate, but if it's something you don't listen to normally it's hard to give valuable feedback, which is why I try to only comment on stuff when I feel like I've got something worth saying.

I like talking about other people's music, and I like listening to other people's music. To name off a few: Ms. Gyroscope, Strelko, CapsAdmin, and Kruma. (Kruma doesn't post anymore, it seems.) I legitimately follow people in this thread.
I dont have time during uni to really read is thread or post my music - its hard enough finding time to make it. But i promise that as soon as i have time one of the first things i do is come to this thread.
As for the feedback its a hell of a lot better than when we have no feedback rules. Then its just people posting their shit once a week and noone listening or responding.
It would be a hell of a lot better if people actually posted real feedback. People like to say they 'can't' because 'they arent good enough' or whatever but thats a bit of a crock of shit imo. Not only is it easy to say WHY you like something, even if you dont have any criticism, its also good practice to try and look into a track and reflect on it. If you dont bother even giving reasons for liking aomething its virtually worthless imo and its not difficult to think of reasons why.
its literally laziness disguised as a lack of confidence for pity's sake
Cant really make that a rule though.
Sometimes it's super difficult to give criticism for something that just rocks.

I legitimately liked this song and I listen to it. I just try my best to indicate that I like it.
I like to give criticism to all the tracks I missed since the last time I gave criticism in one batch when I post my own shit
And I've been fairly deep into working on a larger project of my own lately, so I just haven't popped in here much for that sort of reason.
Personally, I think a bunch of posts saying nothing more than "I like it" or "I don't like it" is worse than no feedback because it's just clutter. It doesn't take that long to pick something specific to comment on
The way I do it is I post a song and then work my way backwards after my post through everyone's music and leave a comment. Sometimes I'll go back the entire page into territory where everyone's already got a bunch of feedback and I kind of think, "well, shit."
Sometimes, feedback isn't important. For instance, I loathe dubstep, and if it's mixed well and it sounds like all the other dubstep I hear, I've got nothing to say. If I love a track, like what I just reposted, then what is there to say other than I dig the heavy lo-fi bass?
And if I rate "winner", that doesn't count as feedback, and no one's going to listen to my stuff. But even if I post forced feedback, the feedback doesn't get a response and no one considers the track I posted. But I don't really care that much if people in this thread don't hear what I have to put out - I'm just saying the thread isn't very genuine most of the time for a reason, and as a result I'm disinterested in being more involved than dishing out personal Soundcloud likes/follows.
Im not particularly interested in changing the feedback rules though. At least the thread is still alive, it never got posts under the old rules even when we had our own forum
[editline]10th September 2015[/editline]
Plus just because you hate a genre doesn't mean you cant find things to criticise constructively. And i really dont see how honest feedback is not genuine
This is almost a month old, but I still like it, so that's a good sign considering how I tend to feel about most of my songs a bit after I make them.
