Im not particularly interested in changing the feedback rules though. At least the thread is still alive, it never got posts under the old rules even when we had our own forum
[editline]10th September 2015[/editline]
Plus just because you hate a genre doesn't mean you cant find things to criticise constructively. And i really dont see how honest feedback is not genuine
I'm posting this real quick before I crash for the night, but the inability to criticize is genuine feedback. If it sounds fine in terms of mixing, fits in the genre nicely, and works as a song, it's fine. If I were to criticize any further into that, it would be douchebaggery, because it would sprout for my dislike for the genre and dislike for sticking so firmly to the explicit style for a genre, and that's not necessarily productive for all artists. That's far more philosophical.
This is almost a month old, but I still like it, so that's a good sign considering how I tend to feel about most of my songs a bit after I make them.

You should put some effects on that clap.
No offense but that melody sounds like you played random notes and took out the ones that were out of key.
I really like that bouncy bass. You should EQ the piercing frequencies out when it goes legato though.
I made this cus I wanted to try making something a little more energetic
The piano and general sound is nice, but it needs a bit more variety and mixing of elements I think. Chopping up chords maybe, or taking trips briefly into higher or lower octaves (if you have any perfect sevenths try playing with those maybe?). Also, it does seem a bit squishy. Not a lot of variation in volume or note velocity, and I think you should try playing with that a bit to create more texture in the melody at least, using that to diversify the song and build/release energy.
It seems like a nice track but it doesn't really go anywhere. Was this the intent? If not, try to think of ways to add and remove tension (as mentioned above) to make the track go more places or tell a story yknow

I think the melody is okay, but your mixing and mastering could use a touch of work. I also say EQ out the really harsh bass frequencies, its a really neat sound and tone but it does at points gets harsh. Maybe use like a channel strip and just limit or gently compress that one frequency range? Also, maybe bring back a bit of the dynamic range in the latter half of the song. It gets very loud and looks pretty squished as far as I can see, and it shows up on my board all near the same volume (for reference, apparently its supposed to be kick at +2db due to lag snare at 0db and hats/hi-freq shit all the way down at -8/-10db due to same lag)
eeey wauterboi look its heavily distorted overly obnoxious bass. Version A or B? Anything else any of you notice?

https://soundcloud.com/nofuchsgiven/fucking-magic/s-eUd9h (this is an FM synth and as far as I can tell its purely magic in terms of sounds I don't understand it)
I've been working on this song most of the day, I've never produced anything like it and have just been playing with sound design for a heavily distorted bass sound like this. I've been trying to get the mixing of it already somewhat decent, I have a multiband comp keeping everything fairly balanced in apparent volume (although earlier it broked and fucked me and halofreaks ears with a really loud subbass that made our ears feel weird). I think I'm still technically building the drop? I dunno, I've never even built a drop. Just following the electro house tutorial on bass gorilla since I haven't had any creativity as of late, spent most of it on JD-Xi jams :v:

im liking the second one more than the first, FM can be pretty raw sometimes. there definitely needs to be some work on the mixing, its not nearly prominant enough
im liking the second one more than the first, FM can be pretty raw sometimes. there definitely needs to be some work on the mixing, its not nearly prominant enough
Yeah, I finished a better balanced version of it before trying to go bed. Still up three hours later I should have just finished the song... Boosted the volume and brought the frequency spectrum even more in line with the pink noise curve and eat lightly sidecbained it to the kick drum so I could boost the volume a touch more. Also over drove the third saturator to give it a churning sound in the background that's really neat

you inability to criticise still needs to be stated because otherwise its completely indistinguishable from being too lazy to listen to the track
Well yeah I guess it's not super hard to elaborate, but if it's something you don't listen to normally it's hard to give valuable feedback, which is why I try to only comment on stuff when I feel like I've got something worth saying.
Everyone in this thread is a musician, they should know to elaborate more beyond "I like" or "I dislike, ugh!" since you'd assume someone who does music can point out exactly what it is they like/dislike about a track, don't you think?
you inability to criticise still needs to be stated because otherwise its completely indistinguishable from being too lazy to listen to the track
You got a point. If you don't like the genre and don't like the song, then saying you don't like the genre and thereafter saying why you didn't like it (apart from not liking the genre) is a good way of doing it I guess.

The solution to this, I've found, is by practicing and by humming. I believe it was a couple years before I could start doing melodies that weren't awful.

I agree with this guy. The bass has a lot more character in the second. I think if you added some distortion to this and made it a little brighter, it would sound great and have that edge you're looking for.
What bothered me is about the wideness of the whole track. I usually mix things slightly left and slightly right if they're not important, or add at most like 50-70% width to something. Any higher and it ends up being taxing to listen to - this was starting to feel a little sickening since it seemed everything was fully wide. On top of adding strings, filtering the sample to be brighter and more full will do wonders, but I think that would only work if you had extra stuff to go with it.

I feel like you could introduce some really lovely strings on this, and introduce a lovely Cello or other bassy string instrument to start carrying the necessary lows needed for this track. Strings allow for some great evolving sounds and can take this piece farther than sampled hip-hop as well.

I like the way this sounds. The sample does a good job of preventing the beat from sounding repetitive, but it gets a little too quiet for my taste in some parts, most notably 15 seconds in.
Are there any particularly good learning resources for mastering/mixing?
General tips I know is to not think of your audio as a block of cheese where everything needs to be equally as loud. I technically don't know how to mix outside of experience.
- Nothing should be louder than 0db. (this is important if you're using a limiter) If you have to cause your audio to fight through to get that loud, turn other things down and, if necessary, compress the audio you want to strengthen. Mix down, and then turn up.
- Not everything should be bright, and not everything should be heavy on the lows. Your goal should be to fill in the gaps your main instruments don't and shouldn't carry out. Overlapping is fine, but overlapping can lead to issues where it's hard to distinguish the clarity of the sound. I find most issues in this area with kicks and bass, and the best solution for that is simply letting one take the higher bassy areas and letting the other take the lower, subby areas. Think of how colors in graphic design can bring one another out or cause obscurity - I think it's a similar idea.
- Stuff that goes in the background can benefit from added reverb. It gives an illusion of depth for obvious reasons, and also kind of has the same effect as focusing on a camera - people will focus more on the dry audio with recognition that it is the most important, and the reverb can contribute to a general ambiance.
- Take breaks. Endlessly working on the mixing for something in one session can sound like absolute crap the next time you go to listen to it. As you're listening to your stuff, listen to well-mixed music in a similar style to get an idea of what well-mixed is and the type of mixing you're going for. Mixing can be very stylistic - the differences of mixing for The Beatles and Skrillex are gigantic.
- Something that I do is something others might hate - I find that mixing things slightly left or right adds breathing room and expands your sound. Leave important stuff in the middle or at least very, very close, and pan everything else out a little bit. I generally mix similar themed instruments equal distance apart.
Shit, I've been slacking for a while, on the topic of feedback. The old thread was always tight during those times where there was more feedback going around than new music being posted in general. Still listening to everything that's posted in the thread though.

At 0:10, those 2 kicks between the third & fourth snares - I think that would sound better if you lowered the volume of one of them for each time that part of the beat repeats throughout the song. It should make it less apparent that it's the same kick sound each time, while also give it a just a little more swing. Another thing regarding the drums, I'd also recommend adding a subtle dusty vinyl sound in the background, because you can still hear the vinyl sound (from wherever you sampled the drums) fading out after each drum hit, especially on the kick.
I think it's good though, the bass sounds nice together with whatever that bowed string instrument is that's playing alongside it, the drums sound nice and thick, and the track altogether has that sample-y, hip hop sound to it.
This is almost a month old, but I still like it, so that's a good sign considering how I tend to feel about most of my songs a bit after I make them.
I think you should lower the volume of the wobbly bass sound, it really drowns everything out once it picks up about a minute in. The drums don't really cut through very well either (I can't even hear the clap after the first minute), but you could probably solve that for the most part just by making the clap brighter and having the other instruments in the low end sidechained to the kick. I do like that synth sound that the track starts off with though, it's real wide & works nicely with the sub-bass.
Are there any particularly good learning resources for mastering/mixing?
There's an absolute shit-ton of tutorials and tips for it on Youtube, just make sure to watch a few different videos of the same thing if you decide to use that, so you won't adopt any bad habits from somebody else. Wauterboi covered pretty much everything you should look into, but I just want to add onto this part right here:
Overlapping is fine, but overlapping can lead to issues where it's hard to distinguish the clarity of the sound. I find most issues in this area with kicks and bass, and the best solution for that is simply letting one take the higher bassy areas and letting the other take the lower, subby areas.
If you're not already familiar with sidechain compression, you should also look into it for at least that reason. Long story short, sidechaining will compress one thing based on how loud another is - so if you're having issues making the kick cut through the bass, you can sort it out by making the bass briefly quiet down during each kick.
Another thing I should add is that you should also listen to your song at different volume levels every once in a while. If you play it quietly and you can't hear something important, or you play it loudly and something is too harsh, you'll have a better idea of what you need to change.
[editline]10th September 2015[/editline]

Small other tips I've learned:
- Multiband compression can be the best. Ableton has an awesome plugin for this.
- If it sounds good quiet it'll sound good loud. Problem is loudness in general makes things seem to sound nicer, but this is just perception fuckery.
- Mixing according to a pink noise curve in your final steps is a good idea, it gives an even apparent volume across all frequencies since the human ear perceives highs as louder and lows as quiet-er.
- Sidechain compression is huge. You can do it lightly, or do a bit of sidechain limiting to duck the sound a bit. Daft Punk used heavy side chain compression for some of their signature tracks, using the Alesis 3630 compressor. Why I shared this I dunno
- If you really love how high your reverb is, its probably too high. Bring it down a notch.
- Also, use busses or send tracks for reverb. You can apply more drastic track-by-track reverb when needed but sending each of the tracks to the same send track can put them in the same atmosphere.
- Tune your drums to the fundamental or main note of your bassline. This isn't a drastic change, but its something that sounds really nice in a subtle way when done right.
- New York compression is something to play with. This means running the compression at only 50% wet or not sending all of the audio into that bus. You can also attempt parallel compression, and using two easier compressors in series to have less of a drastic/pumping effect on the track in question.
[editline]10th September 2015[/editline]
- Low and highpass most of your stuff. In terms of lowpassing, drop the frequency until you hear a difference. Then creep it up by a small smidgen or two, just in case. This helps clear the highest frequencies for FX, noise sweeps, hats, cymbals, shakers and such.
- Highpassing should be done as well on most of your stuff, and in the case of the kick or bass choose which one you want to be most emphasized and only lightly highpass that. Highpass the other up to about 100hz. In terms of the rest of the instruments, same thing applies as with lowpassing. Up until you hear difference, than back down a touch.
- At times if you hear a difference you can also decided to leave these drastic filters there and go back and emphasize key harmonics. Although you may need to enable some kind of keyfollow or pitch tracking on that to get it to work right.

I've got your stuff open in my browser to check out and respond to later - my little brother is currently catching up with me on RedLetterMedia's Best of the Worst at the moment!
I usually side-chain my reverb on important instruments so that it doesn't sound muddy. The reverb kicks in after the main audio drops off.
I always wondered where the Musician's Gig Room went here on FP. Glad people are still able to share what they've made.

How did you get that bassy synth sound? Sounds like a very slow phaser on it, it sounds great though.
Also yeah, I almost always side chain the kick and bass atleast a very tiny bit, and sometimes I sidechain other sounds - if you overdo it enough and the kick follows a flat pulsing rhythm you can get the kinda wub sounds, an example where I did that and it's very obvious is in this track (if you listen from 1:56~)

I normally can't stand the really intense breakcore-style drums but this is really good. Might make a nice intro to a drumfunk song or something like that. Make it slightly less intense and I could see it working nicely for a 5 minute song.
But really, everything in this sounds good, I can't think of anything to improve unless you were planning on making a full song out of it.
drum and bass/acid techno/I don't even know anymore, also yay vocoders

this is really neat, but i think that the hihat/snare at the beginning was a little loud in comparison to everything else, but overall this really brings me back to the late 90's/early 2000's, lovin it!

i know the mixing isnt quite perfect, but its not too bad hopefully
It's nice, but maybe bring the sample out more, it's more exciting than the bassline which is why I think it should be on the front

Also try prioritizing instruments you want to be on the front instead of having everything being the same volume
It starts out as a promising rave track but listening to the same acid melody gets boring quick, like you draw it out for the whole duration of the buildup and even after that for a bit. After it's gone there isn't that much going for the track, try playing with filters and automation to make the track more active and alive or layer synths to make more fat and exciting ones to listen to.
