Hey guys, I know this might be looked down upon here, but I'm looking for a musician to help out on a project, we are building a game, and we already have pretty much all the preliminary work done, all concepts and papers, a game design document and we already have artists working on the game, the only thing we lack is a proper musician, would any of you be interested? we are planning to release the game on PC and on a undisclosed platform, we are looking for people that can do music fitting in a fairytale world, like child of light's or zelda's. If anyone is interested, send me a PM! cheers
Heres a thing:
The kick rhythm in the beginning and end part is not quite "right". I guess you were going for some kind of semi-offbeat thing, which is hard to pull off. It's also a little jarring how it turns into a perfectly quantized beat in the middle of it. The synthwork is fantastic as always. Nice atmosphere you got going. Here's my thing: Arrangement is finished, mixing is not.

Like how it went. Also neat little segue into the complete atmosphere change, are those noise drums? The noise seems a bit high at parts, but works really well in the transition in and out. I understand mixing work needing to be done though. You kept switching atmo's on me! 2m forward has really that lush retro pad sound, but it sounds a bit muffled or like its being pushed all the way back in the mix. I feel it could dwell a bit closer to the lead synth sound there. The backing piano sound at 3:30ish could work well, but I think it sounds a bit too far out of tune. The chords at 4m could be made a bit clearer, but the moment of calm works pretty well overall. THe melody was nice and the arpeggiated synth sounds were all neat, and I liked that the pad sounds came back in a bit near the end. also nice little sub bass sweeps (if thats what they are), but they might even work lasting a bit longer. Reminds me of some of the sounds from Jon Hallur's work for the EvE soundtrack, lots of that ambient stuff had sub sweeps for a creepy/spacey vibe. Lovely and neat track though, was a fun listen and never got boring. More inventive and varied then I could do right now. I've been attempting to figure this shit out for like 6months now and I finally decided I just needed to start making tracks and stop endlessly tweaking sounds and making small 8-12 bar loops I get trapped in looking for perfection. So here's a thing I made, I wanted to make a vaguely melodic dubstep track and I have the arrangement pretty much finished. The transition with the reversed piano chord near the end is weird and I don't like it, but I hesistate to use another reversed crash and I dunno if a noise sweep would work. I also think the kick needs a bit of work and the wobble bass could be made either more prominent or made into just a sub wobble. I am pretty happy with chords and melody though, the chords were borrowed from a tutorial video but the melody was mostly scratchbuilt and I know on the last track I posted here like 3 months ago (it feels) Mr. Jazzy suggested trying to use more instruments. Also, the Pads in the intro and very end are from my JD-Xi and hopefully they recorded in okay quality this time. Thanks <3 https://soundcloud.com/nofuchsgiven/chillstep-arrangement-freeze-2/s-nASsT [editline]15th September 2015[/editline] Goddamn I say neat a lot. I'm like the neature guy, except not funny [editline]15th September 2015[/editline] Also, anyone got any ideas on how to get the big chord synth that intros at about 1:58 in this song? I can hear that its got a sub bass synth following along, and its synced with the kick to make it seem punchier but despite trying a bunch of synths and a bunch of waves and settings and effects I can't seem to even get close to this sound and I'm completely stuck. I'm even having trouble with that plucky arpeggio sound, which I feel should be easier.

The intro is a little bit to drawn out for my taste, I usually prefer a beat to kick in a bit sooner in a track that I would listen to, but that's only my musical taste. The leading melody keeps the song flowing without too much repetition like you might hear in my music (jab to myself there), but it feels too random and it doesn't have a solid hook to it that I can follow. Is that lead a synth or a soundfont? Either way it sounds awesome. The track could definitely benefit from some delay on certain synths, that might sound cool, I don't know if you already tried that or not. I finished this track after working on it on and off for a few weeks. I haven't been on here as much because I've just been so busy with work and school, so my ample free time has gone to this track. I might end up re-mastering it because I think I went too hard with the sidechaining. Other than that, I liked the way it turned out.
I've started on this with the intent of making a song that's calmer than my other songs. I like the melody so far, but every time I listen to what I have so far, I feel like it's missing something. Any suggestions? And this is just my own personal taste, but I think more of the bass instrument, or maybe an extra bass sound, would fit in with the last parts of the song. To me, the break between the two parts is a bit awkward because of the near-absolute silence between them. It might also help to add a little more punch to maintain some consistency of sorts with the reverse crash used before.
Overall a really nice song, I like the atmosphere. The kick drum seems to overpower everything else earlier on though. There's also a little bass sound you have that starts at 0:54, and appears throughout the song. Would have sounded great if it lasted longer than just one beat, it could serve as a nice bassline for the entire song. Also, that sort of string noise you have that fades in at 1:40 and continues until 3:25 doesn't really fit. The melody is nice but a different type of sound might have worked better. Threw together some jungle
I normally can't stand the really intense breakcore-style drums but this is really good. Might make a nice intro to a drumfunk song or something like that. Make it slightly less intense and I could see it working nicely for a 5 minute song. But really, everything in this sounds good, I can't think of anything to improve unless you were planning on making a full song out of it. drum and bass/acid techno/I don't even know anymore, also yay vocoders
This sounds pretty dope, the introduction especially. The snare at the start sounds a bit out of place for some reason, might just be the volume. I do love the acid sounds though. Here's a song I made the other day, I still struggle with making good composition and getting clean sounding bass.
Thanks! The melody sound is still the main piano but layered with a pizzicato string ensemble and a flute sound that I got from an orchestral soundpack. Choral sounds are sampled too, and I do agree that delay is an excellent idea. I hadn't even thought of that for some reason, I used to overuse it way too much. I do agree the intro is too long, but mostly compared to the length of the rest of the song. It'd make more sense if the song was a lot longer as is, but instead I think I'll shorten it down a bit. Getting a solid hook is hard, and its something I still work on. In terms of variety for the melody, what I did here was write the one first melody then just make the second mostly the same but varied slightly, either inverted up/down or mirrored left/right. In general having the melody follow the contour of the chords is the one big thing I really try to stick to.
I've started on this with the intent of making a song that's calmer than my other songs. I'm sure I can find another reverse crash that has the same feeling but still sounds different enough. I'll have to give it a shot. The absolute silence is what makes it weird, thinking I'll reverb the choir a bit and slow that portion down considerably and turn it into the bridge so to speak.
This sounds pretty dope, the introduction especially. The snare at the start sounds a bit out of place for some reason, might just be the volume. I do love the acid sounds though. Here's a song I made the other day, I still struggle with making good composition and getting clean sounding bass.
The bass sounds mostly fine. The kick is a bit loud, but that may be my headphones alone. The vocal of let the bass drop feels out of place and too stiff- it suddenly drops in with no FX, says what it needs to say, then just completely disappears. A bit of reverb or delay triggered to only catch the word "drop" would be neat and there are loads of tutorials on how to delay only certain words. You can clean the mud out of the bass by splitting the frequencies and raising the mids and highs while maintaining the lows, and doing EQ work to cut out any unimportant frequencies. Mud maintenance is just keeping unnecessary frequencies out of the mix, but the gain slider is still the most powerful tool. The amount of blind and blatantly dumb hatred and circlejerking in the hardware synth community is astounding. Roland showed off their new boutique line yesterday, and everyone is already bashing it for probably being a "VA piece of shit" (despite the virtual analog TB-3 and TR-8 being known to sound great, along with System-1) with shitty mini keys and wow why doesn't fucking ROLAND JUST PRODUCE THE OLD STUFF ANYMORE does anyone REMEMBER THE GOOD OLD DAYS. Nevermind that we get the possibility of desktop Jp8, Juno-106, and JX-3P modules to hook to nicer keyboards and program with. At a price considerably lower than the Jupiter-8's 5k price when it was sold new on release. same shit on the Juno-DS announcement page. Saying that this is shit compared to the old Juno's why does Roland even try. I dunno, maybe they know that lightweight performance keyboards with sequencing and diverse ROMpler libraries are actually really loved and the previous Juno series hit that mark AND the old juno's were designed as affordable home synths like these are affordable home keyboards. fuck these people piss me off I don't know why it gets to me so much but they're all so blind and can't think for themselves

I just started learning how to work with audio interfaces (specifically Audiotools right now, I know it's not the best program but it lets me learn how to work synths and stuff). I figured the funnest thing to make first would be a little chiptune track, so here's a little preview of it.

After using Jeskola Buzz for so many years, I've gotta jump ship to something more stable. [t]http://jeskola.net/buzz/buzz_screenshot.jpg[/t] (image is from the website) I've yet to see a music program emulate this workflow. It's a modular tracker whose development was dead for about a decade before being worked on again. Since it was free, it's what has got me into music production. I've used it since I was ten years old back in 2005. It wasn't until like 2009 that basic functions like being able to undo actions was implemented. It's still super primitive in what it offers. But it's what I'm the most comfortable with. I wish this project was bigger than what it was and what it is now. I implore everyone to try out for a little ditty just to see what I mean. The machine view is a visual representation of audio chains, where every module in the chain is referred to as a generator machine or effect machine. The pattern editor allows you to create patterns consisting of MIDI notes which are then repeated in the sequence editor. All of this is super speedy and specific. Automation is done through hex. Everything is done with a tracker interface, save for manual tweaks in machine parameter GUI's. God, do I hate piano roll editors. But it's better than working in a program designed for Windows 95.

My endgame here is probably making drum and bass, or bases of some alternative song ideas I have.

The only downside is not being able to place and manipulate long samples like in fl since you cant really see it. Thats why I often will make something in renoise. Master it. Then go into fl studio and add some samples.
Renoise isn't as fast as Jeskola Buzz in terms of workflow. Not being able to assign patterns to numbers and using numbers to insert patterns is super lame, in my opinion.
Left Control/Command + Arrow Up/Down: Select the next/previous pattern in the sequence. Left Control/Command + Arrow Left/Right: Change the current pattern's number. Left Control/Command + Insert Key: Insert a new pattern into the sequence. Left Control/Command + Delete Key: Delete the current pattern from the sequence. Left Control/Command + Spacebar: Schedules the pattern currently being edited for playback. This only works with decoupled playback enabled. Left Control/Command + Left Shift + Spacebar: Immediately plays the pattern currently being edited. This only works with decoupled playback enabled.
I have to push left or right to switch the pattern and I normally use a shit ton of patterns.

Dunno if I'm in the right place but here we go: Just got my keyboard today (M-Audi Oxygen 25) and got the Albeton software. I have no idea what I am doing but holy shit, I am having a ton of fun just messing around and making things that sound like music. Currently looking at tutorials and whatnot to help me get a better understanding. Also, what's with all these extra sound packs being so dang expensive? Like 100 bux for some of them. That's nuts!
Acquire live 9 suite somehow
I'd love to, but it'll be some time before I can afford that.
I'd love to, but it'll be some time before I can afford that.
There are other acquisition methods. It's fine as long as you don't make money from your shit really, I cannot afford it right now and frankly with software like this some companies assume most users pirate the software since if you ever go commercial with your projects you'll need to purchase it then. I don't hugely love piracy, but here I think it's understandable. Live 9 suite is fairly priced for how powerful it is and how good he stock plug-ins are (varien uses only stock Ableton stuff j believe) but I can't really afford it atm
Is there anybody here who would like to make an attempt at mastering (and possibly mixing, although I'll probably do that) a couple of songs that me and some friends are recording?

Remember how i was bitching about people bitching about those roland boutique synths because "muh mini keys" and "ROLAND IS JUST SHIT"? Turns out the boutique synths are modules that are exact replicas of their namesake's panels. The JP-08 one for example features all the knobs and sliders of the originals and everything. Only 4 voice polyphony, but its Roland's really good ACB tech from the AIRA line and they're only $400. album of leaked images here. Any of these would be a very solid first synth investment for anyone looking for pure-synth type setups and really really good analog emulation. Modules are easy to run from midi keyboards too!
